In this Universal app from British developer KeyStageFun the Squeebles are back and this time these cute little monsters are teaching fractions. Fractions are typically a pretty dry subject but the Squeebles actually make it fun. The Squeebles are having a cake show but the Maths Monster is in charge and says you can only enter if you learn how to do fractions. The app can support multiple player profiles. It includes four mini-games: Piece of Cake, Tricky Pairs, Think Big and Super Sums.

The cake is cut into segments and the child needs to tap on the correct number of segments and put it on the Squeebles plate e.g. it might be cut into 6 pieces and if the Squeeble asks for ½ the child must tap on 3 pieces then slide those onto his plate. They have a minute to fulfill as many cake requests as they can. There are two difficulty levels in this game.

Tricky Pairs: here there are cards showing fractions on the table and the child has to match pairs of equivalent fractions e.g. 6/10 and 3/5. In the easy level there are 8 cards to pick from, in the harder level 18 cards.
Think Big: two Squeebles are thinking of fractions, you have to drag the cake to whoever is thinking of the bigger fraction, solve as many as you can in a minute. There are two difficulty levels in this game.
Super Sums: There are 3 different levels in this game. In level one you add to fractions with the same denominator (e.g. 1/6 + 2/6), and you need to pick the right answer from two possible answers. The answer may have a different denominator e.g. for 1/6+ 2/6 the answer may be given as ½. Level two is similar but you pick from three possible answers. In level three there are four possible answers and the parts of the sum may have different denominators e.g. 1/3 + 7/12.

By playing the games and getting answers right the children can earn cake mixes, icing, fillings and toppings. At the end of each game , they can also win entries into the Cake Show and bronze, silver or gold trophies depending on their performance. At any time they can bake a cake by choosing from their available mixes, fillings, icings and toppings. They enter their masterpiece into the Cake Show and the Squeebles will judge them on points out of ten. They can use their imagination and some very interesting ingredients to try to work out what the Squeebles will like. The Squeebles have unusual taste buds- my creation of Potato Curry Cake with Lime Pepper filling, Toffee Drizzle Icing and Fried Eggs scored 8.06, whereas a more classic White Cake with Strawberry Jam filling, White Icing and Strawberries only scored 7.12!! Pictures of all the cake show entries, along with their points are displayed in a gallery. My eight-year-old son is learning fractions at school, and so I had him test it out Squeebles Fractions to see what he thought. He really enjoyed it, especially the Piece of Cake and Think Big games. He was also motivated to keep working on the tougher games, Tricky Pairs and Super Sums, by collecting ingredients and creating masterpieces for the cake show. He thought it was totally hilarious when he got a strange ingredient choice such as fried eggs or glowing licorice. It seems like the ingredients you earn are pretty random as he and I have earned totally different ones, which makes competing in the cake show even more fun.

Overall, Squeebles Fractions has done a great job of turning a difficult subject into a fun game, and something that children will actually want to play. It works on the key element of understanding what fractions represent by taking the idea of a pie chart and turning it into something more fun. It also works on other important areas of fractions – adding fractions, comparing the size of fractions and fraction equivalency. I love the way the Squeebles apps incorporate fun games into the apps to give a built in reward system. Highly recommended, a 5 star app!
