Toca Life: City by Toca Boca – Review

More articles

First, there was Toca Life: Town, a sweet and quiet little suburban community. Now, Toca Boca has brought us Toca Life: City, a hustling and bustling metropolis with a myriad of delightful residents and four places to explore: The Food Courts, The Shopping Mall, The Salon, and the Loft Apartment. This app is best suited to children aged four to eight although older children may enjoy playing with the app beyond that.

There is no shortage of food choices in the Food Courts. It is located outdoors and houses seven restaurants where you can have sushi, rice bowls, burgers, pizzas, fish and chips, noodles, and desserts. There are tables and chairs for dining in, as well as condiments to use. If you would rather take out, you can easily pack your food by placing them on the designated packing areas. If you want to pack more than one food at a time, place them first on a tray before placing them on the packing area. You can also pour drinks and serve them. Cups, bottles, and glasses empty as the beverages are consumed. Food disappears in flash when they are eaten. Beware of the of the ketchup bottle – you will find that it is no ordinary ketchup bottle!

The shopping mall is located just west of the Food Courts. You can buy groceries to stock up your fridge and pantry at home. You can take a look at all the different pets in the pet store and bring one home with you. You can shop for kitchen appliances and other household items. You can buy toys for the little ones. You can also shop for some new clothes, which you can try on before you buy! Out of cash? Don’t fret! There is an ATM nearby that will give you as much cash as you want. Now here is the kicker, if you want to pay the clerk, make sure to place the cash next to the register. This will make the register ring and open up. If you place the cash next to the clerk (thinking you are handing him or her your payment), the clerk misunderstands and eats it. Haha!

Tired of your hairstyle and want to try something new? Stop by the hair salon, just north of the Food Courts and northwest of the Shopping Mall. This salon has a new, state-of-the-art hair machine that transforms your hair into any length, any style, at just a push of the button. If you want to change your hair color, just grab one of the colored hairsprays and presto! There also combs, brushes, and scissors, but these do not really do anything except what you want them to do in your own imagination.

Finally, after a long day, it’s time to go home and get some rest and relaxation. The Apartment Loft is located at the east end of the city. It has a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom, and a balcony. You can play a game on the TV in the living room, or pop in one of the DVD discs to watch a movie. You can cook on the stove and oven, and depending on what you cook, you can see your food turn into a nice darker color. There is much to explore here as there is in the other areas of the city.

Toca Life: City comes with a host of new characters and you can take them anywhere in the city by clicking on the “people crossing” sign on the bottom right of the screen. Scroll through the characters and choose the one you want. If you gave them a package of food from the Food Court or a gift bag from the shopping mall, they will still have it in hand. This way, you can bring home all the items you bought.

My little girl saw the trailer for Toca Life: City about two weeks before the game was released and was eagerly anticipating it. I am happy to say, it did not disappoint her. She was delighted with the new characters and enjoyed checking out all the different things she could do in the city. She had plenty of stories to tell and I could hear her voicing the different characters and pets she chose. She even played it with her older siblings, which generated even more giggling and laughter.

There are a few things she and I would like to see in future updates. We would love an office or workplace. Most people commute to the city to work, so we need a place of work. My daughter would like the pets and some of the objects to be more interactive: for the plants to grow as they are watered, for the chopsticks and other utensils to pick up food, for some appliances to light up or make noises, etc. She would also like more bedrooms and beds in the apartment loft. She also pointed out that the basketball hoop in the toy shop was fun, but as soon as you shoot the ball, the ball disappears in the trash can located under the hoop. She would like to be able to get the ball back and shoot some more. She would also like an easier way to get things about of bags. A package is easy to open because you just click on it, but a bag is harder because you have to drag the items out of it, and sometimes you just end up dragging the whole bag instead of getting stuff out. Finally, if there is any way to get from Toca Life: City to Toca Life: Town within the app, it would be fantastic!

There are so many things to do and discover in Toca Life: City. It will entertain children while giving them opportunity to use their imagination, their speech, and their storytelling skills. Clearly, it is another winner from Toca Boca.
