Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer by Oceanhouse Media – Review

More articles

Our favorite red nosed reindeer is back, this time in an Oceanhouse Media e-book. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, like other Oceanhouse Media books, features a “read it to me”, “read it myself” and “autoplay” mode allowing individuals to interact with the book. This book includes audio snippets from the TV special as well as a musical soundtrack.

We loved the illustrations, straight from the timeless 1964 TV special including Rudolph’s glowing nose and some dialog from the characters including Santa and Ruldolph. We also really liked the music and the falling snow during the story. The text highlights during the “read it to me” feature and snippets from the TV special are included in the narration, while others are hidden in the app which you can find by touching various items on the page.

To enhance the app, animation or even actual snippets from the TV special would provide another special touch. There are a couple of times during the book that the illustrations and audio snippets really don’t match the text of the book, for example during the page when Rudolph goes home we are instead put into the Abominable Snow Monster’s Cave instead of his cave at home and when Santa gets the news about the weather forecast. We also wished that the part about the Land of the Misfit toys was included as it is mentioned in the text, but not actually shown at the end

This app made us remember watching the TV special as a child and we were delighted to share it with our children. It was a wonderful app which brought smiles to our faces. Currently priced at $2.99 (US) iTunes store, this is a story you will love to share with your family over and over again.
