Jim Henson’s Chatter Zoo by Mindshapes Limited – Review

More articles

Jim Henson’s Chatter Zoo by Mindshapes is universal app for iOS featuring a variety of animals where children are given specific tasks to complete to help the animals including: waking them up, touching them to help the kangaroo jump, playing outside, taking a bath, playing hide and seek, completing routines and more. The app features four animals Bailey the baby elephant, Pip the baby Wallaby, Lulu the baby panda and Franny the baby cheetah.

The app features bright illustrations and is frustration free for young children with six mini games as every touch on your device triggers some sort of action even if it is not the intended one. If children have trouble finding or performing the right action a small black highlight goes around the object to help them find the right one. I also liked that the app encourages children to “use their words” to describe what they wanted to do or what they were looking for. After completing a task, the babies practice a song to reinforce learning like the “color song” which provides both visual and spoken reinforcement about what they just learned. The music contained within the app is soothing and not overwhelming for children especially during the bedtime routine. My son also liked feeding the animals to see which foods they liked versus disliked. It’s also a great app for practicing language and using your words.

Some of the things that are completed like giving the baby animals a bath should require that the animals have to get out of the bath to get dried off rather than sitting in a wet soapy bath to be “clean”. I also found this game, unlike some of the others didn’t have a natural end and you washed the same “baby” multiple times unless you touched the “home button” within the mini game. I would also like to see word highlighting when there is text on the screen that is read as this would be a nice reinforcement for emerging readers. Adding every single mini game for each animal would also give the app more versatility and longer times for playing.

If your children love to play “house” with stuffed animals and take care of them this is a great app which allows them to practice early literacy skills, following directions, practicing colors and shapes as well as having fun. The app does feature a parent lock which requires you to tap a window and hold ensuring that young children do not get access to “unexpected” areas of the app. This app is best aimed at toddlers and preschoolers.
