Being Benny by Purple Sneakers Studio – Review

More articles

Being Benny by Purple Sneakers Studio and Artgig Studio features a “Read it to Me” and a “I’ll Read it” option to tell us the story of Benny who is feeling lonesome on a rainy day and starts to think of the various things that he could be including a tree, a car, a bird and even a dinosaur. This app promotes problem solving, dramatic play and imagination skills as well as early literacy skills.

The narration and illustrations provide a great glimpse into what Benny is imagining in a fun rhythm which encourages kids to read along. Our favorite activity was the rocket ship and the dessert aka apple pie. We also liked imagining each of the things that we could be.

I do wish that if you touched the items in the story, such as the alarm clock that they would ring or do some sort of activity. I did notice that some of the items such as the piano did play music, but it was somewhat sporadic within the app. I’d also like to see the words highlighted as they are read since this promotes early literacy skills. We have other apps that do this, so my son was taping on the screen looking for this.

If you are looking for a great app on a rainy or even snowy day that inspires imagination in your child, Being Benny will be a great fit. The illustrations are rich and promote children to think about various objects in a different way. Priced at $0.99 in the US iTunes store, this book app will provide hours of entertainment.
