Halloween is almost upon us, and a great way to get in the mood is to read Halloween books on the iPad with your children. You will find classic Halloween tales and new original stories. There are stories about witches, pumpkins, bats, vampires and Trick or Treating. From stories for toddlers and pre-schoolers to ones the whole family will enjoy. We first published this list in October 2012 and have updated it with some new titles we have discovered. Don’t forget to also check out our Halloween Picks for Fun and Learning.
Here are some of our favorite Halloween Book apps:
It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown For Halloween nostalgia nothing beats the peanuts gang. Loud Crow have done a great job of bringing this Halloween Classic to life. It is presented as a pop-up book and you can read it yourself or have it narrated by Peter Robbins (the original Charlie Brown). It has animations, interactive elements and the original music and dialog. You can also carve a pumpkin which then appears in the app. There is also an option to dress a Peanuts Character in a costume and he will appear in the app wearing it. The developer has recently removed all in-app purchases, and the huge range of costumes are now free. A must have Halloween app.

What Was I Scared Of- Dr Seuss ? This is one of my all time favorite Dr Seuss books and it is great to have it available as an app. In this classic tale the hero meets “a pair of pale green pants with no-body inside them”, at first he convinces himself that he isn’t scared but the more often he seems them the more terrified he gets. Eventually he discovers that the pale green pants are just as scared of him, and they both realize that just because they are different it doesn’t seem they should be afraid of each other and they become friends. The Witch With No Name by SlimCricket. A funny and very interactive tale about a witch who has lost her name, and is very grumpy as a result. Her Bat Battina decides to help her find her name, and together they go about collecting all the ingredients needed for a spell to find out her name. This app is really well done, fun, well narrated and the reader really gets to be part of the story with several mini-games, such as tiding and sorting a room when trying to find a missing ingredient and helping to cast spells. This will be enjoyed by pre-schoolers and elementary school aged children. A beautiful 3-D story, well worth the price tag. there is also a cheaper iPhone version, and a free lite available.

The Berenstain Bears Go On A Ghost Walk by Oceanhouse Media. In this tale Berenstain Bears are getting ready for Halloween and Papa Bear is in charge of setting up the school’s Ghost Walk. He gets carried away and forgets Mama Bear’s advice that “one person’s fun is another person’s nightmare”. Papa Bear learns his lesson and realizes that Halloween can be fun without being scary, he then scales back the fright factor and everyone has a fun time at the Ghost Walk.
