Babii! by Skybound Interactive Ltd. – Review

screen babii

Animals and vehicles are among the first nouns that young children are taught. Besides showing the real thing, you can also introduce these and accelerate your child’s vocabulary learning with the use of pictures. Here, the use of an app has an advantage over picture books and flashcards in that apps allow children to hear the names as well as the sounds made by the animals and vehicles. Kids can learn independently with minimum effort.

What we love…

Children get to see each animal/vehicle in different settings and engaged in different activities.

What we’d love to see…

More categories to be added.

Summary

An easy to use and kid-safe app for toddlers to learn about animals and vehicles with more categories of nouns planned.

Our Rating

Babii! by Skybound Interactive Ltd. is one such app that is easy for toddlers to use and affordable for the parents. The app starts right away upon opening and young children just need to tap on the screen of the device to see the next picture. With each tap, they get to learn the name of each animal/vehicle, how they look and sound like as well as their natural habitat/environment.

There are 2 ways the animals/vehicles are presented in Babii! – a grid of 9 thumbnail images or a 1-image mode. Each of the thumbnail images focuses on a group of similar animals or vehicles. Tapping an image from the grid will expand it to full screen and another tap will return it to the grid. Repeated tapping on the same grid will show the animals or vehicle in different settings and in different actions – swimming, running, eating, etc. This helps children to generalize their knowledge. In 1-image mode, the images are shown randomly and is perfect for younger children.

The photos used are of high resolution and the sound recording associated with each image is clear. Currently, the app uses Siri to read the names of the animals and vehicles. A future move to using pre-recorded voice will be a welcomed improvement. Switching between the 3 categories – Domestic Animals, Wild Animals and Vehicles, is straightforward and I understand that there are plans for more categories to be added.

You can also switch the language used by the app to different accents of English, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese or Romanian without having to change your device’s language setting. This is definitely a bonus for children growing up in multilingual families/communities.

A child’s early years are the best time for building knowledge and for those of you who are looking for apps to introduce your toddlers to the world of animals and vehicles while stimulating their minds through the exposure of foreign languages, Babii! is a good and affordable app to consider.

What we love…

flexible app that teaches a variety of verbs, adjectives, sign words, letters and numbers to children from toddler through late elementary school

What we’d love to see…

multi user functionality; ability to track progress in a dashboard rather than having to start over each time; better instructions for the mini games

Summary

This app would be a good one for English as a second language learner as the curriculum included is straightforward and will help children learn in a sequential way. For a child that is already a native English speaker, it might be useful in early intervention or other skills based learning for children with a speech delay.

Our Rating

Fun English Course - Language Learning Games for Kids aged 3-10. Toddlers, kindergarten and preschool children learn English through play activities.Fun English Course by Studycat Limited is a universal app designed for iOS to teach children English through a variety of games and activities targeting children from preschool through elementary school with older learners learning English as a second language. Through a variety of games including colors, animals, numbers, food, vehicles, body parts, fruits, clothing, items around the house, and sea animals children are treated to a variety of activities to help teach them about the basics about the item through a set of exercises including finding an object in a scene, spelling, memory cards, pairing up items, listening skills and more. The app features bright colors and animations and each game has a different set of activities designed to engage children without making it feel repetitive for learning. The languages offered for the app include: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese. The app teaches things like singular and plural, spelling, verbs like “to be”, “to have” and “to put” as well as “likes/doesn’t like”, descriptors on “he/she is wearing, adjectives and more. Each lesson starts with an introduction to the word and then proceeds into a variety of games for children to play. The app also features a “lite” version with in-app purchases allowing you to try the app before making the purchase either of modules or the entire app. Each game has a variety of levels which your child must master before being able to move on to the next level.

In terms of things that I liked, I found the app engaging for my five year old as we worked on word identification, item identification and basic English skills. He is currently working on sight words at school – so there were times I took items in the app out of context and focused on skills specific to his needs rather than what the app was trying to teach him. Having the different sections allowed me to help him target specific areas that he needed to focus on. The app engages and I liked that the games did not repeat over and over again and helped focus in on specific skills.

I also found some of the games needed more instruction as they were a bit “hit or miss” as to how to play them especially the fish game in the numbers section. To complete this game you needed to shoot a pearl at the fish in order to make him count – we figured this out after tapping on him multiple times without success. The app does have a locked parent section which requires a swipe. Given that this targets children from the very young to older, I’d like to at least see a math problem included here to prevent kids from getting into external links as well as social media. I would also like to see a dashboard of items that your child has worked on and areas that might need additional focus as well as an option for multiple children. Given the price of the app – I was disappointed to see that it did not include that functionality as I can see this as a tool that speech therapists as well as classroom teachers and parents would use, but it is one of the higher priced apps at $12.99 and this would help it appeal to a wider audience. I would also like to see counting to a higher number such as 20 or 30 included as this is a skill that preschool/kindergarten students are expected to have.

This app would be a good one for English as a second language learner as the curriculum included is straightforward and will help children learn in a sequential way. For a child that is already a native English speaker, it might be useful in early intervention or other skills based learning for children with a speech delay.

What we love…

Simple for even the youngest users and a great app for practicing receptive, expressive language as well as identification of objects in a colorful and engaging way

What we’d love to see…

inclusion of a “for parent’s section” as well as the ability to tap to have the word pronounced a second time in the “arrow mode”

Summary

Fantastic app to teach object recognition, sounds of a variety of objects in a simple yet engaging way. Once you start exploring it, you will find new ways to use it each time you try it!

Our Rating

Sound TouchSound Touch by SoundTouch is an app for iOS featuring 72 different items each with five variations for a total of 360 pictures, sounds and words in this app. The app, designed for iPhone, includes bright colorful images and allows your child to see an image, hear the name of it as well as the sound of it all with a simple touch of the finger making it easy for even the youngest users. This app is designed for toddlers and preschoolers, although it would be a fantastic addition to any speech therapists repertoire of apps as well since it encourages naming of objects, expressive and receptive language through “find an object”, “name an object” which can be driven by a parent or a therapist. You can also specify the number of objects you want to appear on the screen from four to 12. Settings also allow you to customize how to close an image – either by touch or by arrow, which can again be adjusted. The app speaks in 32 different languages which can be changed in the “settings” menu of your device enabling it to be used to teach new words in a second or even third language. The app is broken up into six categories including: small animals, large animals, birds, vehicles, instruments, as well as common household objects. The app has two modes, touch which allows you to open and close a picture with just a touch as well as an arrow which requires users to tap on the arrow before being able to exit the object.

The images contained within the app are engaging to children – with the first image on the page being a visual representation which encourages you to touch it, and the second being a photograph accompanied by a sound. Each of the 72 items has five different variations so even if your child keeps tapping on the same object over and over again they will see multiple images and hear different sounds rather than just one.

One of my favorite features of the app was the musical instruments section which featured classical music when you tapped on each musical instrument. The pieces were engaging and were a great way for a child to “hear” what an instrument sounded like as well as seeing the representation. I loved sharing this feature with my son who enjoys music of any type. The pieces played for as long as you had the images open and each image had a different musical song much like the other pictures contained within the app. I also liked asking my son to look for specific pictures within the field of objects and tapping on them to ensure he used the proper names for each object. The spoken text is accurate when I reviewed it in English and easy to understand with good pronunciation.  I also really liked that the settings for the app were contained in a completely different section of the phone ensuring little fingers could not change them accidentally.  Below is a screenshot inside the settings menu of my iPhone.

20131116-094604.jpg

In terms of improvements,  I would also like to see a way to have the names of the objects pronounced a second time by touching the word.  I’d also like to see a  for parents section that might give some thoughts on how to use the app with your child – behind an appropriate parental lock – or perhaps contained on the website.

Languages included within the app include: English, British English, Latin Spanish, Iberian Spanish, German, French, Canadian French, Japanese, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Russian, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Iberian Portuguese, Catalan, Korean, Mandarin, Afrikaans, Polish, Hungarian, Greek, Croatian, Slovenian, Tagalog, Persian, Turkish, Arabic and Hebrew. All of these languages can be customized and set within the settings of your device.

Fantastic app to teach object recognition, sounds of a variety of objects in a simple yet engaging way. Once you start exploring it, you will find new ways to use it each time you try it! This app contains no external links or in-app purchases and all settings are customized within the settings menu of your device. This app is best suited for children from toddler through early elementary and can be used to teach expressive and receptive language as well as targeting object recognition. It can be used in a variety of ways from teaching a first language and recognition to teaching secondary languages, use with speech therapists and in foreign language courses for speaking the names of simple objects.

What we love…

the variety of mini games within the app provided hours of fun for my preschooler.  He loved describing each of the scenes to me, singing along with the app as well as the car wash because he got to get the car “dirty”.

What we’d love to see…

Removal of the advertising for other apps on the front page,   more games including a free play scene which combines all of the vehicles from within the app.

Summary

This app is best suited for toddlers through preschool age children as well as children who just love Trucks!  The game is fun and provides hours of play without seeming repetitive and allows them to practice a number of skills including: sequencing, sorting, problem solving as well as translate them to real life such as recycling.

Our Rating

Trucks - by Duck Duck MooseTrucks by Duck Duck Moose is a iPhone or iPad app (depending on which version you choose) featuring five vehicle related activities including a carwash, tow truck, garbage and recycling, bulldozer and dump truck as well as a car parade.  The app teaches children skills such as problem solving (fixing a flat tire, changing tires and choosing a hubcap) sorting (sorting items into garbage, recycling and compost) and problem solving (creating piles of dirt, cleaning a car with soap, washing and drying it off).

We have used this as an app to practice naming the different objects within the app as well as colors, shapes, describing what did as well as describing the sequences that needed to be completed prior to completing a task like the carwash.  My son loved the carwash – he thought it was so much fun to roll the car through the mud and then clean it with soap, brushes and his personal favorite – bubbles!  He asked me several times when we would drive by a carwash if we could wash our car because it was dirty – so I definitely knew he understood the concept.  He also really enjoyed cleaning up the street and sorting items into garbage, recycling bins and compost bins.  We also really enjoyed the various musical tunes within the app including our favorite, “Hurry Hurry Drive the Firetruck” which played during the car parade portion of the app – this was a fun section and you could control the speed of the vehicles by picking a green, yellow or red light.  The app is delightfully simple and does not have any “right or wrong” answers which allows your children to play with it as they wish.  As a mom, I liked how each activity let you “play” within the app and let you use your imagination.  We also used the recycling section of the app to discuss what things when into what bins – and it has thankfully led to our son putting more of the right items in bins and led to increased recycling which is a win-win for all of us.
The mini games within the app are: car wash (washing a car after it is dirty); repair shop (fixing flat tires and changing hubcaps), garbage and recycling (pick up garbage of the street and put it into the proper containers or bins and then matching it to the proper truck), Dump Truck & Bulldozer (make piles of dirt), car parade  (pick a different vehicle to drive in the parade and control the speed using green, yellow and red lights).

I’d like to see the option to remove the advertising for other apps from the front page.  This detracts from the app and can allow kids to in-inadvertently get into the iTunes store if the settings on your device are not correct.  I’d also like to see more games including a free play scene which combines all of the vehicles from within the app.

This app is best suited for toddlers through preschool age children as well as children who just love Trucks!  The game is fun and provides hours of play without seeming repetitive and allows them to practice a number of skills including: sequencing, sorting, problem solving as well as translate them to real life such as recycling.
