What we love…

An effortless approach to learning the times tables using fun stories.

What we’d love to see…

Include the narrative text in the stories and a story quiz in the training mode to help students better recall the details of the stories before attempting the multiplication questions to ensure greater success.

Summary

Mathemagics Multiplication offers an unconventional but effective story mnemonics technique for memorizing the times tables of 1 to 10.

Our Rating

How do children learn the multiplication tables? First, they learn how to multiply, then they need to memorize the multiplication tables so that they can quickly solve math problems. This usually means lots of practice through boring drills and repetitive exercises. But what if we present you with an approach that can help speed up the memorization process while being fun at the same time? Will you give it a try even if the approach is unconventional or untested?

Mathemagics Multiplication by SlimCricket is a new app that aims to help students memorize the multiplication tables in a whole new way using stories. While memory techniques using songs and stories are not new, it is still uncommon to have students use stories in memorizing the times tables.

But even if you are skeptical, it’s still worth your time to download Mathemagics Multiplication’s free lite version app to read the parents’ guide and let your child have a go at the trial.

Before getting to the stories, students are introduced to the characters in the stories. These are actually the numbers 1 to 10, each with its own name and a personality that helps define how they interact with other characters (numbers). The first section of the app ‘I discover’ is devoted to this character association using a character quiz. This is easy as each character is shaped like its number counterpart.

Once the student has successfully completed the quiz for a character, he can then proceed to watch the multiplication stories for that number in the ‘I learn’ section. Each story is a short cartoon animation and works on the child’s visual memory of what the story is about. There is no explanation for how the times table work, students just need to watch and learn the story. The unique stories help students to form a memorable association between the characters/numbers in a multiplication fact so that when they see the numbers, they remember the stories and then the multiplication facts that they represent.

What I like in this section is the ’trick’ to help students remember only half of the tables. Your child (or even yourself) may not be aware of this because this is often not highlighted. This trick works well in this app because students don’t need to work through each table by repeatedly adding the same number. They just need to learn the stories and the stories for half of the tables are the same, for example the story for 2 X 4 is the same as that for 4 X 2.

After the students have gone through all the stories from a times table, they can then move on to the levelled exercises in the ‘I play’ section where their memory of the stories is tested. Here, they can choose between the training or game mode, the difference is that points for correct answers are only given in the game mode. The multiplication questions in the ‘I play’ section are first presented in the form of the characters and then the mnemonics are gradually phased out as the students progress.

IMG_9335

After completing the tests in the ‘I play’ section, students can go on to do even more practice in “My challenges’ and earn rewards. Besides the mnemonic training, this app packs in lots of levelled quizzes and challenges to help your child master their times tables in the shortest time possible.

To keep students motivated to complete more quizzes and challenges, points collected from the game mode can be used to buy a house and the furniture for each character in ‘My rewards’ section.

For parents and teachers, you can track up to 3 students’ progress in the full version app ($4.99) while the school version app ($7.99) allows you to create up to 40 profiles.

For children, memorizing a silly story is definitely easier than a multiplication fact. This app takes advantage of children’s innate ability to retain information that has been presented to them visually. It does not take away the importance of understanding the concept of multiplication. It just provides students with a quick and easy way to memorize the tables which in turn speeds up problem solving and reduce frustrations.

You may not be comfortable with this non-traditional method of mastering the times tables, but do keep an open mind and let your child try it out. The free trial version of the app allows your child to learn some of multiplication facts from the 4 times table. My youngest hasn’t gone through all the stories yet but for those that he did, he gave faster and more accurate answers after using the app. This app is definitely worth a try and you may be surprised at how well it works for your child.

10monkeys Multiplication by 10monkeys.com Ltd – Review

What we love…

Fun and addictive gameplay that speeds up the learning and memorization of times tables.

What we’d love to see…

The 11 and 12 times tables included.

Summary

A must-have multiplication tables trainer app that is fun for both adults and kids!

Our Rating

A new addiction is here! 10monkeys Multiplication by 10monkeys.com Ltd (an online Math learning website for kids) is so much fun and addictive, I couldn’t put it down! Thanks to the app, I am now a times table expert, I just need to see the two factors and I instantly know the answer!

In 10monkeys Multiplication, kids have to free 10 monkeys trapped in a tree, in an arcade-style game using their multiplication skills. There are 10 game levels in the app, each corresponding to a monkey and a times table (2 to 10) or a combination of the 1-10 times tables. Starting from the 2 times table, players free a monkey as they earn sufficient points to unlock each level. The games are slightly different from each other – some are timed, others give you 3 lives; some have fixed targets while others’ are moving. The gameplay gets harder and faster as the player collects more points. Players get bonus points for special moves and high scorers can leave their names on the global leaderboards for each game level.

Gone are the days (I do hope) when students had to memorize the multiplication tables without understanding what they all mean. Our kids need to understand that multiplication is the sum of groups of the same quantity. That said, they still need to know the times tables by heart in order to do their Math fast. Remembering the times tables just makes their life so much easier, if not a necessity.

In this app, your child can start by memorizing or revising the times tables (included in the app) before playing. Here, the order of the factors in the times tables is the reverse of the norm. For example, in the 7 times table, it’s 1×7, 2×7, 3×7 etc. instead of 7×1, 7×2, 7×3, etc. While this makes no difference to the product (answer), the app gives your child another way of looking at times tables. Knowing that 4 x 7 is the same as 7 x 4 and similarly for all, cuts the memory work by half!

20130718-164028.jpg10monkeys Multiplication has great 3D graphics and sound effects. There is also a calming forest sound in the background which you can turn off in the settings, if you wish. Check out the game tutorial too if you want to score. Besides having your times tables at your fingertips (literally), you will need strategy and fast hand-eye coordination as well.  Try it yourself, this app is fun for both kids and adults alike. I really enjoyed beating my own highscores and climbing up the global leaderboards. Check out my achievement on the mixed times tables game ranking!

The app’s exciting and competitive gameplay will have your child keep coming back to it and he will master his times tables in no time. It is free for a limited time so you and your child can start playing right away. Get it now and have fun!

Developer Interview with Ian Knapp from KeyStageFun

Today’s interview is with Ian Knapp from KeyStageFun.  Please visit their website, Facebook and Twitter pages.  Be sure to check out our review of Squeebles Fractions.

KeyStageFun

Ian, thank you for participating our interview. Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a 36 year old Dad of two from the UK. I’ve been developing educational apps for just over 2 years. Our Squeebles range has topped the educational charts in both the UK and Australia for both iPad and iPhone.

How did the idea for your app come about?

When my daughter was first learning her times tables I wanted to find a fun, interactive way of helping her find the learning process more enjoyable than simply reciting tables over and over. I looked in the app store but couldn’t find anything which really grabbed my attention, so I decided to build an app myself. My wife came up with the name, my children helped design some of the characters and it all went from there

And how long was the process from the original idea to the release of the app?

Around 3 or 4 months for the first app we did.

Did you hire a developer or do it yourself?

I did it myself – the artwork and programming were all done by me.

What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in the development process?

Coming from a background of always working as part of a team to suddenly doing this on my own was a tricky transition in some ways as you have less people to bounce ideas off. My children, their friends and my wife have proven very helpful in that respect. From a technical point of view, supporting lots of different devices and operating systems is a challenge but I use a piece of software called Corona which helps enormously with that, meaning I only have to write my code once and it can be published for several different types of device, specifically iOS, Kindle Fire and other Android devices which are my major target markets. Marketing the apps was also something that was new to me so that’s been a bit of a learning curve – but I like that challenge and have actually found it very satisfying having to do that side of things.

Have you had much support during the development process (from family, peers, Apple Inc.)?

Absolutely – my family have been very supportive. Like I said, my children and my wife came up with some of the Squeebles characters and ideas for the original app we did so it has been very much a family effort.

iPhone Screenshot 1What are your plans for the future? Will you be developing any more apps?

Absolutely! We have 6 Squeebles apps out now – 5 maths based ones and one spelling app. We have plans to enhance those based on the feedback we’ve had from children and parents from all over the world. We also have a new app due out before Christmas 2012 and ideas for others.

What sort of feedback has your app been receiving so far?

Feedback has been amazing, with most customers rating our apps 5 stars in the app stores and national newspapers in the UK and Australia picking up on the apps and featuring them. E-mails from parents have provided us with a lot of positive feedback and plenty more ideas for developing our apps further. It’s wonderful to hear from parents telling you how your apps have made a real difference with their child learning to spell or learn their tables. We’ve run several competitions to engage children with the characters by having them design new Squeebles and that has generated a lot of interest and great feedback from parents and kids.

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering creating their own app?

Spend time planning every detail before you start – you may not stick to your plan 100% but at least if you start with one you know which direction you’re heading in! You need to be passionate about what you’re creating. This passion will show through in your finished app. Avoid trying to monetize your app with in-app purchases and ads – most parents quite rightly don’t want their children bombarded with those sorts of things.

Thank you so much for talking with us today and sharing a bit about your company.  We really appreciated the chance to get to know you!
