The MightySat™ Fingertip Pulse Oximeter by Masimo Corporation is a Bluetooth enabled pulse Oximeter which uses hospital grade technology to measure Oxygen Saturation, Pulse Rate, Perfusion Index, Respiration Rate, and Pleth Variability Index.  It is measured by placing the pulse Oximeter on your fingertip and within seconds the information begins to pop up.  It can be used with a companion iOS or Android app, or standalone.

Below is a description from Masimo about each of the types of measurements done by the device which are obtained in moments after placing it on your finger.  You can pair your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth so you can track trend over time, or you can simply use the Pulse Ox standalone.  There is no setup other than downloading the app to your device.  It also supports multiple profiles and can be used on those that weigh over 66 lbs.

iPhone Screenshot 1

Measurements:

Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) – the oxygen level in the arterial blood to indicate changes due to heart or lung function, oxygen use by your body, or altitude

Pulse Rate (PR) – the number of pulses per minute to indicate overall fitness as well as exertion levels at a particular moment in time

Perfusion Index (PI) – the strength of blood flow to your finger to indicate changes in blood circulation

Respiration Rate (RRp) – the number of breaths you are taking each minute to indicate how well your heart and lungs are functioning as well as how quickly you can recover after exercise.

Pleth Variability Index (PVI) – the variation in perfusion index over your breathing cycle. Changes in PVI may indicate changes in hydration, breathing effort, perfusion, or other factors. ¹ ² ³ *

One of my favorite features of the device is the ability to pair it with your device and see trend over time.  It’s important for me to make sure I take my medications before exercising and to stay on point without overdoing it.  I am also admittedly a data person and I enjoy looking at my trend over time when exercising to see how my numbers compare from the Pulse Ox to my level of activity and performance.  It helps me know when I can push harder, or when I might need to take a break from exercise.  Combined with a wearable fitness tracker, MightySat™ Fingertip Pulse Oximeter provides a more comprehensive overview of you in the moment as well as helping make decisions on how hard you can push your body.

Overall, I love how easy it is to track over time using the MightySat™ Fingertip Pulse Oximeter to see trends and see when I can push my body harder.  It has fantastic battery life – I have yet to change the batteries and I use it a few times a week.

RRP $299 and available from a variety of retailers including Masimo MightySat Fingertip Pulse Oximeter (Bluetooth + Pleth Variability Index + Respiration Rate)“>Amazon.

InBody PUSH - Handheld Ultrasonic Stadiometer Height Measuring Device for Kids and Adults with CDC Growth Charts APP for iOS and Android

What we love…

easy to use accurate way to keep track of your kids height over time including via a companion app

What we’d love to see…

Video’s to demonstrate usage and integration with Push app

Summary

Great device to help you keep track of your kids growth over time and I liked how I could compare my son’s height to my other son once I had entered all of the data into the app.  I was able to track roughly how tall they were at the same ages – although we didn’t use the exact same measuring tool.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

Push is a handheld stadiometer which measures height using ultrasound via the push of a button.  The stadiomer and companion app will register and manage the heights of up to 20 people and plots measurements on a CDC growth chart.  The device is shaped in a triangular shape and is easily held in one hand allowing you to measure your child – or anyone else in a simple easy to manage one hand format.  You can use it to track your children’s growth over time as an alternative to the “pencil marking on the wall” or traditional growth charts that you may otherwise have to mount on the wall.  To use, you simply have your child stand on a hard surface like a hardwood floor (carpet does not work well) with their feet against the wall, you push a button with one finger and the measurement is done in mere seconds.  Push uses ambient temperature and humidity to ensure the measurement is correct, otherwise it will deliver an error message.  I tried using it both the “recommended” as well as “non recommended” ways and found Push’s accuracy was best on a solid surface floor versus carpet.  Push will measure heights from  1′ 8″ – 6′ 7″ / 50 – 200 cm.  Of note, heights can vary by up to .2″ depending on the posture of your child when measuring.  When you add your child to the Push app, you can enter if they are male/female as well as a photo.  This helps to ensure your child is tracked on the correct growth chart.

As a mom, I like to know the statistics of my kids.  I weigh them monthly and have always had trouble keeping track of their heights.  I used to use a wall-mounted chart but found that it differed significantly from measuring devices used by my kid’s doctors – which even include drawing lines on the paper for babies who can not yet stand and measuring using a measuring tape.  I have even found that their heights can vary depending on where they are measured, if they have their feet properly against the wall or even how cooperative they are on a specific day!  For me, knowing their height is important for a variety of reasons including height in a car seat, knowledge of where they fit on a growth curve and just to see how they are growing over time.  I love how easy Push is to use.  I loved how easy Push was to use.  The measurements were accurate and they were displayed both on the Push device as well as loaded into the Push app on my iPhone.  I also liked that Push will display results over time and show how my child compares to others on the growth chart.    I also liked that I could go back and put in historical measurements for my kid’s heights which meant I could track them over time – this is a manual addition via the Push app where you input measured data.

iPhone Screenshot 3

In terms of enhancements, I wish that the instructions for Push were a little clearer.  The device itself is easy to use, however, a video demonstration or even more specific instructions might be helpful to brand new users.  Once you use Push a few times, it’s very intuitive so a video or some sort of demonstration might be helpful just for brand new users.  It would also be helpful to have more direct instructions on how to enter data into the Push app – I figured it out via trial and error, but that information might be helpful for first time users.

Overall, this is a great device to help you keep track of your kids growth over time and I liked how I could compare my son’s height to my other son once I had entered all of the data into the app.  I was able to track roughly how tall they were at the same ages – although we didn’t use the exact same measuring tool.  I look forward to keeping track of my kids measurements over time and seeing how they grow over time.

Kensington Introduces MP230L Performance Mouse for Wireless Freedom and Precision TrackingI cut the “mouse cord” several years ago and am always hunting for the best cordless mice.  I tried the Kensington MP230L Wireless Performance Mouse and was surprised at how much I liked it straight out of the box.  The mouse includes batteries and once you plug in the USB nano receiver you are ready to go in less than 3 minutes from opening the package.   It uses a 2.4 GHz Wireless connection meaning you can move the mouse without the cord using the nano receiver and it automatically installs once you plug it in for the first time.  It is universal and works with both Mac and Windows and easily switches between computers.  It also features two side buttons which you can use when browsing the web as well as DPI adjustment which allows you to fine tune how fast or slow the cursor moves while using it.

Wireless mice these days often don’t come with batteries, which means that your brand new tech is forced to sit in the box while you go out and purchase batteries.  I loved that this one had batteries right in the box.  It’s got an amazing battery life – and goes to “sleep” when not in use or you can switch it off on the bottom.  I also liked the ergonomic shape and ability to use it either left or right handed.  The best feature by far is the fact it works on pretty much any surface I tried including glass, a patio table with bumps, a wooden desk, and even a notebook cover.   I liked it for both my everyday desk mouse as well as a travel mouse – the size is small and it fit easily in my travel bag when I needed to use it.  I also liked the DPI adjustment because I could use it to scroll fast when I was skimming a webpage or slow it down when I was looking for more specific content.

In terms of enhancements, I’d like to see a bag for the mouse as there were a few times I went to put the receiver in it and didn’t latch the cover fully which left me digging in my tech bag for the mouse and receiver.  I’d also like to see some sort of a “battery alert” if your batteries are getting low, because I don’t always carry backup batteries (even though I should).  There is no charging port, but you can use it with rechargeable batteries and just charge them in a separate location.

Overall, this is an easy to hold wireless mouse that works on both Mac & PC as well as being easy to use and install within moments.  Features fantastic battery life, very ergonomic and works with both left and right hands.  It is priced at $35 49.99 on Kensington and Amazon.  Easy to use mouse with great battery life, works on almost any surface, very comfortable in your hand.  Perfect as an everyday and a travel mouse.

Ozobot Bit 2.0 (Titanium Black)

What we love…

super easy to use out of the box, encourages learning both on and off of a device as well as teaches kids basic programming skills and following directions

What we’d love to see…

Summary

Fun, interactive must have science and learning toy which will teach your kids the fundamentals of Blocky programming while they are having fun and grooving to the music!

Ozobot Bit 2.0 (Titanium Black)Ozobot Bit 2.0 is a small robot, about the size of your hand.  Don’t let the small size fool you, this handheld robot brought hours of fun to my seven year old.  My son loved having dance parties, STEM and science inspired learning, computer programming, cooperative play and more.  The Ozobot Bit was ready to play with as soon as you opened the box.  The Ozobot uses twin motors to drive quietly and precisely while using a sensor at the bottom of the robot which allows it to scan the path.  Ozobot Bit can see color, follow lines (both on your device as well as drawn on a piece of paper) and detect intersections.  My son drew intricate patterns using a Sharpie marker as well as using the included app.  The Ozobot Bit runs for about an hour on a single charge, and charged in about two hours.  I loved that it included STEM lesson plans which helped me tailor learning to him both on and off of the device.

Ozobot Bit is just over an inch tall and one inch wide.  Ozobot can be played with either using your iDevice (iPad) or by drawing lines on paper which it will trace.  You can also use OzoBlocky which lets you use your desktop or laptop computer, and create your own movement schedules such as how fast or slow you want your Ozobot to move, what light pattern you want it to flash, if you want it to go forward or back and how many times you want it to complete a particular movement pattern.

iPad Screenshot 2

When we opened Ozobot Bit there were several small cards which had pre-designed pattern templates designed to help you calibrate your Ozobot.  We drew out some designs while we waited for the Ozobot to get a full charge and be ready to go.  We also downloaded a few of the Apps including my sons favorite, the Ozobot Groove which had some pre-designed dance moves and then he could make up his own patterns.  I loved that my son was programming – without even realizing it as he worked step by step to create the dance moves he wanted his Ozobot to complete.  When we sat down at the computer, I explained that the moves we made on the screen would be brought to life using the Ozobot.  We used the Ozobot Bit to complete some science homework one night – which required him to write a simple program which I filmed using my iPhone to share with his teacher.  It was a win win because my son loved the activity and it brought science to life.  Some of the patterns he made were crazy – with lots of blinking lights while others were more choreographed and easier to follow along.

In terms of enhancements, I would suggest a bit better instructions when using a marker and paper.  We had to experiment a bit with the thickness of the paper as well as which marker to use.  Both Sharpies and Crayola markers worked well on plan white printer paper, while heavier weight art based paper with colored markers was a bit more of a miss.  I’m not sure why, but suspect it was because the thickness of the paper made it harder due to the lack of smoothness for the Ozobot Bit to follow along.

Ozobot Bit would be a great item to add to your kids holiday shopping list.  It’s fun, portable, easy to use and has provided many hours of fun to my seven year old.    It will provide skills such as early programming using Blocky, setting patterns and routines using the included iPad or iPhone app as well as off device fun.  The versatility, portability and fun of a robot that can work on many different surfaces from a tablet, to paper to a program run on your computer will have your child entertained for hours!  STEM learning at it’s best! My son asks if we can adapt his weekly science homework to somehow include the Ozobot Bit. I call that a win for sure!

The Ozobot Bit can be purchased for approximately $59.99 and is available from many retailers including Amazon and New Egg
