What we love…

fun building themed app that appeals to kids from toddler through early elementary school.  I loved that both of my kids could play the app and design different things.

What we’d love to see…

ability to turn off spelling words mini game – this was hard for my toddler although he liked everything else

Summary

Overall, this is a fun construction themed app that has a wide appeal to kids that allows them to design different houses from start to finish and then take a photo of their creations!

Our Rating

Build With GrandpaBuild with Grandpa by Fairlady Media is universal app for iOS designed to help kids with a variety of building as well as teaching them about environmental re-use as kids knock down buildings, drive a construction truck and design a new home to be built.  The app includes six mini educational games which require choice of equipment from a field, addition which items add up to x number, painting, decorating, designing a house and more!  It appeals to preschool, toddler and elementary school depending on which things your kids like to do with the app.  Skills practiced in the app include, math to number 9, literacy through reading and identifying words, design, creativity, landscaping, problem solving, cause and effect.  It also teaches skills about construction and how you go through the process of building something.  This is the 13th app in the app store by Fairlady Media and among my younger son’s favorites.

It was interesting to see my toddler play with the app – he was more into demolishing the old house and clearing the lot as well as dumping the gravel from the truck.   Since he’s only 2 I didn’t expect him to be able to do the higher level games which required addition or foundation words.  My older son on the other hand was interested in the process — and followed along with the app from start to finish and really enjoyed building a house from design to final build.  The two of them had played at various points – so my younger picked the design of the house while my older finished it up.  Both my kids equally enjoyed the different construction related video’s.  My younger son didn’t capture the idea that you could raise and lower the boom with the wrecking ball whereas my older son was much more deliberate with his actions.  To be honest, I was happy to see an app that appealed to both of them. My older son loved painting the house in primary colors and adding the windows, doors and finishing touches.  He loves doing art and design so I wasn’t surprised by this request. My older son would ask Siri if he didn’t recognize a piece of equipment used in the house and enjoyed parking the equipment after finishing the foundation.  I enjoyed both kids narrating the app and telling me what they were doing.

In terms of improvements, I wish that I could turn on and off activities that either my kids liked or disliked or were too developmentally difficult (like math for my 2 year old!) and still be able to play.  My older son would have liked a paintbrush so he could do more detail work when finishing the house up.

Overall, this is a fun construction themed app that has a wide appeal to kids that allows them to design different houses from start to finish and then take a photo of their creations!  There are no in-app purchases or advertising other than for other Fairlady Media games in the app.

InBody PUSH - Handheld Ultrasonic Stadiometer Height Measuring Device for Kids and Adults with CDC Growth Charts APP for iOS and Android

What we love…

easy to use accurate way to keep track of your kids height over time including via a companion app

What we’d love to see…

Video’s to demonstrate usage and integration with Push app

Summary

Great device to help you keep track of your kids growth over time and I liked how I could compare my son’s height to my other son once I had entered all of the data into the app.  I was able to track roughly how tall they were at the same ages – although we didn’t use the exact same measuring tool.

Push is a handheld stadiometer which measures height using ultrasound via the push of a button.  The stadiomer and companion app will register and manage the heights of up to 20 people and plots measurements on a CDC growth chart.  The device is shaped in a triangular shape and is easily held in one hand allowing you to measure your child – or anyone else in a simple easy to manage one hand format.  You can use it to track your children’s growth over time as an alternative to the “pencil marking on the wall” or traditional growth charts that you may otherwise have to mount on the wall.  To use, you simply have your child stand on a hard surface like a hardwood floor (carpet does not work well) with their feet against the wall, you push a button with one finger and the measurement is done in mere seconds.  Push uses ambient temperature and humidity to ensure the measurement is correct, otherwise it will deliver an error message.  I tried using it both the “recommended” as well as “non recommended” ways and found Push’s accuracy was best on a solid surface floor versus carpet.  Push will measure heights from  1′ 8″ – 6′ 7″ / 50 – 200 cm.  Of note, heights can vary by up to .2″ depending on the posture of your child when measuring.  When you add your child to the Push app, you can enter if they are male/female as well as a photo.  This helps to ensure your child is tracked on the correct growth chart.

As a mom, I like to know the statistics of my kids.  I weigh them monthly and have always had trouble keeping track of their heights.  I used to use a wall-mounted chart but found that it differed significantly from measuring devices used by my kid’s doctors – which even include drawing lines on the paper for babies who can not yet stand and measuring using a measuring tape.  I have even found that their heights can vary depending on where they are measured, if they have their feet properly against the wall or even how cooperative they are on a specific day!  For me, knowing their height is important for a variety of reasons including height in a car seat, knowledge of where they fit on a growth curve and just to see how they are growing over time.  I love how easy Push is to use.  I loved how easy Push was to use.  The measurements were accurate and they were displayed both on the Push device as well as loaded into the Push app on my iPhone.  I also liked that Push will display results over time and show how my child compares to others on the growth chart.    I also liked that I could go back and put in historical measurements for my kid’s heights which meant I could track them over time – this is a manual addition via the Push app where you input measured data.

In terms of enhancements, I wish that the instructions for Push were a little clearer.  The device itself is easy to use, however, a video demonstration or even more specific instructions might be helpful to brand new users.  Once you use Push a few times, it’s very intuitive so a video or some sort of demonstration might be helpful just for brand new users.  It would also be helpful to have more direct instructions on how to enter data into the Push app – I figured it out via trial and error, but that information might be helpful for first time users.

Overall, this is a great device to help you keep track of your kids growth over time and I liked how I could compare my son’s height to my other son once I had entered all of the data into the app.  I was able to track roughly how tall they were at the same ages – although we didn’t use the exact same measuring tool.  I look forward to keeping track of my kids measurements over time and seeing how they grow over time.

Baking: An art or a science? Introducing the Perfect Bake App-Controlled Smart Baking – Review & Giveaway

What we love…

Simple and easy to use, scales recipes in case of a mistake and makes baking with the kids fun and easy

What we’d love to see…

easier ability to add recipes via the app, able to make a second recipe while the first is cooking

Summary

I loved how easy the Perfect Bake made it for me to make cookies and desserts with my son.  He loved that he was able to help Mommy out and make recipes while learning at the same time.  Our family enjoyed the baked goods and there we no “oops” moments due to too much of one ingredient.  I am really looking forward to making Christmas cookies soon with my son for the holidays.

Perfect BakeI recently had a chance to test out the Perfect Bake from Brookstone and my son and I loved it!  When I was in college I worked in a bakery part time so I used to bake using recipes and mixtures quite a bit.  Now that I have a family I love spending time in the kitchen and baking.  Some would say that baking is more of a science than an art to ensure that the ingredients are added with the proper amounts  and sifted, measured and added in a scientific manner.  The good news is that with the Perfect Bake you don’t have to worry about it as much!

This scale combined with your device (iOS or Android) allows you to bake with no measuring, no trying to make sure you got that “pinch of a recipe” right.  Simply launch the app, pour the ingredient into the bowl and then when it’s done an alert tells you so.   The package includes a scale, phone/tablet stand, 3 mixing bowls which are color coded for small, medium and large, thermometer for the oven and a 3.5 mm cable.  You simply launch the app, plug the Perfect Bake into your device using the cable, and the scale listens via your device to ensure the proper amount is poured.  Each of the recipes in the app excluding the ones you enter yourself has a rating ranging from easy to hard.

I loved how easy the Perfect Bake made it for me to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies with my son.  Normally it’s a stressful process that involves me pre-measuring everything out to ensure we get the right amounts into the bowl.  Instead, with the Perfect Bake I was able to put the ingredients out in smaller sized containers and he simply poured them into the bowl.  We even made it into a math lesson saying – you need 2 cups of flour and ½  a cup of chocolate chips for this portion of the recipe.  The best part, if you over pour an ingredient the scale automatically adjust allowing you to fix the recipe without having to start over.  I also loved that the app would generate a list of recipes based on what you said was in the pantry allowing you to bake based on what you had on hand rather than having to run out to pick up ingredients to make a recipe.  After adding all the ingredients (which are marked with a check mark when you get the perfect amount) and mixing, then you can measure out the perfect portion sizes using the scale to ensure that you have made the item the correct size.
In terms of improvements, I wish there was an easier way for you to enter recipes into the app.  Currently, it’s a time consuming process to enter a recipe due to having to pick bowl size and entering in the amounts of each item manually.  It would be great if there was an import feature so you could write the recipes on the computer and easily import them into the app.  I also wished there was an easier way to do mixing – currently if you need to use the mixer you have to scrape everything into a bigger bowl to mix it and if you need to add ingredients to that bowl after mixing – transfer it back to the original color coded bowl.  I found this made for a LOT of dishes especially with more complicated recipes and I tended not to use my stand mixer for that reason.  I also wish that you could prepare a second recipe while the timer is still running for the oven for the first recipe.  When I bake I tend to make quite a bit and prefer to bake in batches, but unfortunately the scale doesn’t currently allow it.

Of note, I also used a sleeve to protect my iPad while baking to ensure that we didn’t accidentally have a splatter onto the iPad while cooking.
