Babii! by Skybound Interactive Ltd. – Review

screen babii

Animals and vehicles are among the first nouns that young children are taught. Besides showing the real thing, you can also introduce these and accelerate your child’s vocabulary learning with the use of pictures. Here, the use of an app has an advantage over picture books and flashcards in that apps allow children to hear the names as well as the sounds made by the animals and vehicles. Kids can learn independently with minimum effort.

What we love…

Children get to see each animal/vehicle in different settings and engaged in different activities.

What we’d love to see…

More categories to be added.

Summary

An easy to use and kid-safe app for toddlers to learn about animals and vehicles with more categories of nouns planned.

Our Rating

Babii! by Skybound Interactive Ltd. is one such app that is easy for toddlers to use and affordable for the parents. The app starts right away upon opening and young children just need to tap on the screen of the device to see the next picture. With each tap, they get to learn the name of each animal/vehicle, how they look and sound like as well as their natural habitat/environment.

There are 2 ways the animals/vehicles are presented in Babii! – a grid of 9 thumbnail images or a 1-image mode. Each of the thumbnail images focuses on a group of similar animals or vehicles. Tapping an image from the grid will expand it to full screen and another tap will return it to the grid. Repeated tapping on the same grid will show the animals or vehicle in different settings and in different actions – swimming, running, eating, etc. This helps children to generalize their knowledge. In 1-image mode, the images are shown randomly and is perfect for younger children.

The photos used are of high resolution and the sound recording associated with each image is clear. Currently, the app uses Siri to read the names of the animals and vehicles. A future move to using pre-recorded voice will be a welcomed improvement. Switching between the 3 categories – Domestic Animals, Wild Animals and Vehicles, is straightforward and I understand that there are plans for more categories to be added.

You can also switch the language used by the app to different accents of English, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese or Romanian without having to change your device’s language setting. This is definitely a bonus for children growing up in multilingual families/communities.

A child’s early years are the best time for building knowledge and for those of you who are looking for apps to introduce your toddlers to the world of animals and vehicles while stimulating their minds through the exposure of foreign languages, Babii! is a good and affordable app to consider.

Sound Tap Quiz by Mobile Joy Creations Ltd. – Review and Giveaway

What we love…

Up to 5 sound samples are provided for each sound source, app is customizable to meet different learning goals and the quiz report.

What we’d love to see…

Text that are read out upon touching. Options for white background and text in lower case.

Summary

A great app for learning, practicing listening and discriminating sounds.

Our Rating

I like to collect apps that target the same goal so that my kid is exposed to many examples to help him generalize what he learns.

To learn to recognize common sounds and develop auditory discrimination skills, Sound Tap Quiz does it well by providing not just more categories of sounds but also more sound samples for each item. Included in the app is a total of 6 categories. Each category consists of a sound board with 12 tiles, each corresponding to a sound source. Touch each tile and you can hear up to 5 unique sounds associated to it.  For example, you can hear a horse neighing, squealing, walking or galloping; for a steam ship, the sounds of ship engines, ringing of an engine-room telegraph, lifting the anchor, ship’s siren and a fog horn.  It’s like you have 5 similar apps all combined into one, definitely one of the rare few apps that give you more for the same price.

20130607-003534.jpg 20130612-012142.jpg
This app also stands out for its customization options that allow you adapt the app to meet the changing learning goals that you set for your growing child. There are 2 modes of playing – learning or quiz. If you want to introduce the sounds before testing your child, you use the Learning mode. I really appreciate this since most of the other apps are designed for the child to learn through trial and error which can be frustrating for a young child just beginning to be aware of the different sources of sounds. You can also choose to have the names of the sound source displayed on the sound board if you want your child to learn to read and you can do this in 7 languages – English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese and Polish with more to come.  Another option that is available is the choice of background colors.

In the Quiz mode, you can choose 6, 12 or an unlimited number of questions for your child to attempt in each set of quiz. You can further choose to test your child in a single category, a mixture of categories or all the 3 animal categories combined together.  There is no time limit for the quiz.  Your child can tap repeatedly to listen to the different sound samples associated to the answer and he can attempt as many times he needs to find the answer.  At the end of the quiz, you can even look at the report to see how long and how many attempts your child took to get the right answers.  I find this very helpful since we can go back to the sounds library to learn the ones he finds difficult to identify.
20130612-012153.jpg

The sound and image quality used in Sound Tap Quiz is very good and navigation is easy for the young child.  It is totally child friendly and designed to meet the parents/teachers/therapists’ needs.  If you are looking for an app that allows your child to discover the different common sounds while learning new vocabulary words in 7 languages before being tested, you will want to get Sound Tap Quiz.  In the Quiz mode, it is a great app for practicing listening and discriminating sounds.

What we love…

graphics and step by step process of planting, watering, harvesting the garden

What we’d love to see…

introduction of a way to pay for the vegetables and fruits  harvested within the app

Summary

This app will be a great app for children from toddler though grade school.  The app has many opportunities for open ended play as well as the opportunity to explain a specific step such as the growing process in a simple concise manner to children.

Our Rating

Dr. Panda's Veggie Garden

Dr. Panda’s Veggie Garden by Dr. Panda is the newest in the Dr. Panda series.  This app available for iOS and Android, allows your child to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables for their customers who are comprised of a variety of animals we have met in previous Dr. Panda games.  The app allows you to plow, plant, water, harvest and of course take care of any insect infestations or critters from harming your crops.  This universal app features sequencing, fine motor, visual skills as well as language to name objects within the app.  The app features a variety of different “steps” which include: digging, planting seeds, watering and harvesting for five animal customers using 12 different fruits and vegetables including corn, wheat, strawberries and apples to name a few.  In addition, there are two bonus mini games which help your child organize the tool shed.

This app is a great addition to the Dr. Panda suite of apps.  I really liked the graphics and simplicity of the app which will make it appeal to children from toddlerhood and older.  The step by step process helps children understand that vegetables come from a garden and there is a process for obtaining them.  My son especially enjoyed planting the corn and the wheat.  As children get older, parents can introduce additional concepts with the app to help them understand the growing process and perhaps even take it a step further to planting seeds with their children and helping them to grow.

In terms of enhancements, I’d like to see currency introduced to the app in a future update.  Customers should possibly pay for their vegetables and fruits rather than just handing them off.  This would add a different aspect to the game and perhaps make it more complete.  It would also be nice to have section at the end of the app explaining each of the fruits and vegetables featured during the app.   During the planting section, it would be nice if there was a “help” section as it took me a bit the first time I used the app to realize that you had to fill back in the hole after getting the dirt or that the seeds were shaken from a bag or placed in the hole.  In the strawberry planting, it was a bit of trial and error to turn the pots so that the strawberries could ripen properly.

The app does include a parent lock on the first page, however, prior to enabling the lock that does not allow children to get into iTunes they can click and get directly into it.  I would like to see the parent section made into either a “double tap” or a simple math problem so children are not able to get into the settings and change them.  There are no links to in-app purchases or third party websites after using the “for parent’s” section within the app.

This app will be a great app for children from toddlers though grade school.  The app has many opportunities for open ended play as well as the opportunity to explain a specific step such as the growing process in a simple concise manner to children.  This app will also be helpful to parents trying to explain the growing process and science concepts to children as it is presented in a simple but straightforward manner.

What we love…

Besides being able to record your own voiceover in your preferred language, you can also personalize the voiceover by including your child’s name and special words of encouragement.

What we’d love to see…

A quiz mode to encourage the child to name the colors, a progression from learning the names of the colors and being to identify them.

Summary

This is a high quality app that provides parents with the opportunity to create their very own unique digital color teaching tool, one that their children will truly love to use and learn with.

Our Rating

Baby Learns Colors By Bebebe Co. is a customizable app that allows you to teach your child the names of 12 colors in any language you want by recording your own voiceover or downloading a custom voiceover from Baby Learns’ international community.  You can personalize this app even if you are just using the 4 built -in voiceovers provided (a boy and girl voice each for English and Russian) by choosing your own avatar and which voiceover to use for each of the 3 levels.

Children learn the names of the colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, light blue, purple, pink, brown, white, grey and black) by first exploring the three animated screens: Blots, Fishes and Spaceships in the Learn mode.  The Blots is the easiest level as the animated paint blots are larger in size and only a few of them are shown onscreen at any one time (12 at a time would be too overwhelming for the very young child). With each screen refresh, your child will get to learn more colors.  The blots are cute and your child may enjoy just watching them doing comical actions and making funny sounds.  In the next 2 levels, the fishes and spaceships are smaller in sizes and they are constantly moving (great for visual tracking and hand-eye coordination) to the environment sound of the underwater world and the space.  Designed for young children, all your child needs to do is to tap a blot, fish or spaceship to hear the name of the color spoken in the language chosen for the screen.

The Play mode is where your child is asked to identify the correct color blot, fish or spaceship. Answer 5 correct answers and your child will earn a cute Bebeka for his Prize World where he can have fun playing with all his Bebekas while learning how to be  responsible for housing and feeding them.  There is integration with the Game Center in the Play mode but I doubt this will appeal to young children.  What they will like are the coloring pages where they can color the blots, fishes and spaceships with the 12 colors, providing learning opportunities.

What makes this app unique is the ability to record your own custom voiceover for the names of colors, praises for correct answers and words of encouragement for wrong answers (I changed most of these or made them silent).  This is a perfect feature to have if you want to slow down your speech for articulation purposes. You can also have a different language for each of the three screens and give your child a bilingual or tri-lingual learning experience.  This app instantly became my son’s favorite when I used his voiceover  for the names of the colors and I added his name in my voiceover for the praises and words of encouragements.  He simply loved them.   I used the app to introduce a third local language but it’s a pity that the app doesn’t have any flags of Asian countries that I can use to represent this third language.

Recording is easy and you don’t really need the video tutorial that is available.  You may like to share your voiceover with people around the world who owns Baby Learns Colors but don’t forget to remove your child’s name before uploading.  The developer screens all voiceovers uploaded and highlights only the best recordings.  To date, there are about 140 recordings in 20+ languages which users can download easily through the app for free.

Wish list:-

  1. A locked Parents’ Page to prevent children’s access and the option to hide all prompts leading to it. I’m glad to know that this will be included in a future update.
  2. In the Play mode, I wish the app would repeat the name the color together with the praises when the correct answer is chosen for further reinforcement. Young children are likely to choose their answers randomly and it would be great if the app takes the opportunity to teach even when the wrong color was chosen.
  3. A new quiz mode with recording and playback feature allowing the learner to verbally name the colors asked and to check his own pronunciation against the voiceover’s.

The selling point for this app is definitely the ability to teach your child the names of the 12 colors in the way you want (e.g. a specific intonation and pronunciation) in your language that typical color teaching apps don’t do or such apps don’t exist.  However, if you have no need for such extras, you may find this app comparatively more expensive.  Overall, Baby Learns Colors is a high quality app that has international appeal but most importantly, it provides parents with the opportunity to create their very own unique digital color teaching tool, one that their children will truly love to use and learn with.
