SnapPower Safe Light and USB Charger by SnapPower – Review

What we love…

super easy to install SnapPower Safe Light allows you to childproof and install night lights throughout your house.  Snap Power Charger is a perfect outlet replacement especially if you have a home office where you might need to charge your electronics without having them downstairs

What we’d love to see…

ability to use in a bathroom or kitchen using GFCI

Summary

Easy to install child proofing solution that has the benefit of pathway lighting and no covers to lose or cords to lose when charging your cell phone. I love how easy it is to access my outlets now and don’t worry my toddler will see me removing one of the plastic outlet covers and try to do so himself potentially resulting in a hazard.  Simple.  Easy.  A must have product in my home.

SnapPower Safe Light by SnapPower is an easy to install wall replacement switch that not only childproofs but adds lights so you don’t need to take up one of the outlets with a nightlight.  As a mom of a toddler, I increasingly found myself telling my son “no” when it came to power outlets.  I remember childproofing with my first involved cumbersome outlet covers or the little white outlet covers you would remove just so you could vacuum and then stick back in.  I knew that there had to be a better solution.  At our house, in addition to needing to childproof, many of our outlets had nightlights plugged into at least one of the outlets.  We have some pretty dark corners, especially at the bottom of the stairs.  Other products in the lineup include switch plate covers for light switches
Installation was a snap – it took me more time to go downstairs and turn off the breaker than it did to install each of the three SnapPower Safe Lights.  You simply switch off the power, remove the outlet cover, and then insert the new outlet cover which has metal prongs on each side.  These prongs go inside the outlet and provide power for the LED guidelight at the bottom of the outlet.  Not only are they childproof, but you gain an outlet back and nighttime lighting.  Each outlet contains a sensor which turns the light on and off based on the light conditions or you can set it to high or low, and it costs mere pennies a day to use.  It’s so much brighter than the previous blue nightlights we were using, but not too bright if my older son gets up during the night to use the bathroom.

We also tested the Snap Power Charger, which allows you to convert your outlet to a USB charger, without losing the outlet.  We have a lot of tech in our house – and sometimes our home charging dock is full – or I might just want to plug in my iPhone if it’s running low on battery.  Installation for this was simple as well – the outlet screw provides the connection to power with the power prongs providing power and you simply snap on the cover.

For purposes of the review – I have used both the SnapPower SafeLight and Snap Power USB Charger for over a month – and I honestly love them.  I love that I don’t need to fiddle with plastic outlet covers if I need to do a quick vacuum of the playroom or worry about coming down the stairs in the dark.  When I use the SnapPower SafeLight I simply insert the plug of whatever item I want to use, slide the outlet covers over and am on my way.  When I am done, I unplug and don’t have to worry any longer about putting something else back into the outlet or fiddling with putting the cover back on.

The SnapPower Guidelight and SnapPower USB Charger work on standard outlets – they do not work with GFCI outlets due to the need for a reset button – so you can’t use them in the kitchen or bathrooms.  I would love to see this in the future although I am sure it will require a redesign of some sort.

Overall, this has been a fantastic solution for night time lighting, childproofing and charging for our family.  I love how easy it is to access my outlets now and don’t worry my toddler will see me removing one of the plastic outlet covers and try to do so himself potentially resulting in a hazard.  Simple.  Easy.  A must have product in my home. Items can be purchased directly from SnapPower or via Amazon.

RRP of SnapPower Safe Light is $17.00 USD for a single or 10 for $140 USD.

RRP of the SnapPower USB charger is $20 USD for a single or a three pack for $54 USD.

Starry Station – Touchscreen WiFi Router by Starry – Review

Starry Station - Touchscreen WiFi Router - Simple Setup and Easy Parental Controls. Fast Gigabit Speed

What we love…

easy to set up router with great parental controlss which allow you to isolate a device with specific settings, super use friendly with touchscreen controls and access via your device, great for family time and device free time with the touch of a screen!

What we’d love to see…

more ethernet ports, potential for a web dashboard and more on the “network health”

Summary

Overall, this is a great router which includes parental controls and allows you to easily turn on and off the internet.  The parental controls differentiate this router from others on the market with the ease of a touchscreen or your device – all in one place and easy to use.

Starry Wi-Fi StationThe Starry Station by Starry is a touchscreen wifi router that includes parental controls and simplifies how you use the internet.  When I recently set it up – I had it out of the box and running in less than 10 minutes and that included adding all of my devices to the new networks.  WiFi is fast – with good streaming and surfing quality much faster than my previous router.  It also works with all types of internet including fiber optic, cable and includes built in WPA2 Encryption.  The Starry Station is a triangle shaped router which stands on a side – the base is 3 inches wide and there is a fan behind it.

One of my favorite things about Starry Station is the ease of setup and the fact that I can have parental controls in the palm of my hand or by using the touch screen on the router.  I loved that I could set one device, my 8 year old’s to be off from a specific period of time or even just block his access entirely if I wanted to either from the router or from the app.  I also found that the speeds on the router were more true to what I paid for with Comcast compared to my previous router.   I have a bit of an unusual house set up – and in the past have had a boost downstairs because for some reason I can’t always get good network signal.  Although I did continue to use my wireless access point, it was easily reconfigured to Starry and gave me better and faster service than I had previously.  We live in a media friendly home, and regularly stream Netflix, cable TV, surf the internet as well as having several smart appliances.  Another bonus of the router was that it had the same name for the 2.4G as well as the 5G network, which meant that you didn’t have to remember as many passwords to login.  Using the touch screen or my iPhone/iPad I was able to walk around the house and easily add new devices quickly!  We had 10 devices online easily at a time and noticed no lags or slowdowns while using the router.  We also had some Apple and Android devices as well to try to see if the device mix would change how the network performed and didn’t notice an appreciable difference.  The router also includes a speaker and mic – for future voice control options which are not yet enabled.  I can’t wait to see those enabled.  It also includes guest access which is easily turned on via your device or touchscreen so you can choose who has access and who does not!
iPhone Screenshot 4A bit about the parental controls – this by far was my favorite feature of the router.  I loved that I could easily filter content, pause the internet (for one device or all) and limit access to specific apps using the app on my iPhone.   This meant I could set screen time rules for specific devices, like my son’s iPad without having to worry about blocking my iPad or my husband’s devices.  I also liked that I could set safe content and turn off access to social media all with the touch of a button.  At our house we usually have #devicefree Friday nights where we try to turn off our devices and spend time together as a family.  I always hated having to go upstairs to unplug the router so no one would try to “sneak” access to the internet – now with Starry it’s a simple tap of a button on my iPhone and the internet is off.  The offline hours are great as well – they help to ensure you don’t stay up too late because it can automatically turn off the internet at a specific time (although you can override as necessary).  I also liked the customer support I got when I needed it – I spoke with someone in the United States who took the time to help me answer my question about the wireless access point and ensured things were configured properly.

In terms of enhancements, I do wish the router had more ports on the back of it.  There are only two ports – one for internet coming in and the other for internet coming out..  I did get a wireless bridge to give me more ports so I could plug in all my Ethernet devices in my office.  I also noticed that the network health changed a lot – even when I was standing in the same place.  It was nice in theory because I could see what devices were on the network easily.  I would like to see a web based dashboard in the future just in case I didn’t always have access to my device and needed to tweak something a bit more than I could do with the touch screen.

Overall, this is a great router which includes parental controls and allows you to easily turn on and off the internet.  The parental controls differentiate this router from others on the market with the ease of a touchscreen or your device – all in one place and easy to use.  Plus, with the app you can turn on and off the internet even when you are not home.  It was easy to set up and use, and I love knowing that my son is safe while online as we work on setting our digital boundaries but give him access to a tablet and computer for homework. RRP $250 USD on Amazon.

Nighthawk X4 Smart WiFi Router by NetGear – Review

What we love…

easy to set up, great range, no more #deadspots, guest network

What we’d love to see…

Ability for the antennas to stay upright

Summary

Awesome router which means that my devices work together well using the QOS technology and no more lagtime

Our Rating

NetGear-AmbassaodorWe have many devices in our house that use Wireless internet – four iPads, three smartphones, a Smart TV and a BlueRay Player just to name a few.  I recently got a chace to put the Nighthawk X4 Smart WiFi router to the test.  The router uses a dual-core 1.4 GHz Processor and you can use it wired, WAN-to-LAN as well.  It is designed for gaming and streaming which means that there is minimal if any lag when using the router.  Our internet is not in an ideal location in our house – it’s on the second floor on the left hand side of the house.  This unfortunately means that on the other side of the house on the first floor we often have #deadspots.  I’m happy to report that this router helped to solve that problem.  The router includes four high performance external antennas which meant I could even access my wireless on the front lawn!  Huge win as I love to stream music or occasionally use my laptop outside.  The Nighthawk X4 features Twin USB 3.0 and eSATA ports which makes external storage a snap and you can also install the NETGEAR Genie app on your devices to better manage your network as well as enable and disable guest access.

Setup was a snap, I simply pulled out my old router, plugged in the new with the included cords, screwed in the four antennas and we were online in about 10 minutes.  I loved the WPS Push to Connect for some of my devices and how easy it as to get everything up and running quickly.  Using the Genie app I can also monitor usage on the network and we decided to try to stream a number of things as well as do a download and run a movie on the BlueRay player.  It worked like a champ.  Our internet speed is fast – but we have often seen slowdowns which now seem to be addressed.  The dynamic QOS recognizes different applications which means that you get the bandwith you need to stream or use your devices in the home for a seamless user experience. It is device aware and gives the right bandwith to both the TV and a tablet versus my previous router. My husband was amazed at how quickly the new router was up and running, especially since he had seen me tweak our old Netgear router to get the settings correct.

I loved that the wireless was fairly consistent throughout the house – and we that there were limited #deadspots which I was easily able to boost.  We like to watch Netflix but have been having a problem where the show will stop and buffer on our BlueRay player.  With our previous Netgear router, I was able to tweak the settings and mostly fix the problem, however, with the new Nighthawk X4 it was simply plug and play.  I liked that I could also turn off the LED lights – I left them on and walked by the office where the internet is set up one night and was amazed at the amount of light they generated!   I also liked that it included a guest network so I could securely have a network and then choose if I wanted to turn on the guest one for those visiting our home.  I also liked how easy it was to change the guest access password using the Netgear Genie app.  I also liked the customer service experience, I called in with a question about my connection and they were very helpful to make sure I had the network configured correctly. As a side note, using the Netgear Genie app I could configure parental controls and even say which devices could be on and off the network which meant that I could turn off “screen time” via internet for my son’s iPad without him being aware if he wasn’t supposed to be using it. I also loaded my media collection on and loved that I could stream it from my devices.

In terms of improvements, I do wish that the antennas were a bit more compact.  Where I typically keep my router, I had to move the shelf in order to ensure it was on top and getting good signal.  This was a minor annoyance given how much better the coverage was inside the house.

Overall, this is an awesome router which means that my devices work better and faster with no lags.  I liked the QOS which was seamless and automatic and it meant that I didn’t have to configure anything out of the box other than setting up the admin password and adding in my devices.

i-BRIGHT7x 4ft Smart Surge Protector by Tri Cascade – Review

i bright

What we love…

Simple, easy to operate surge protector that allows you to turn on and off outlets using an app and also acts as a wireless booster and makes sure you don’t come home to a dark house.

What we’d love to see…

More outlets!  The ability to use 5G instead of just 2.5g for my wireless

Summary

Overall, this is a great product that you never knew you HAD TO HAVE!  I loved that I could bring one surge protector on vacation and charge my iPad/iPhone, boost my wi-fi and have more outlets at the same time!  it was a win win all around.

How many times have you planned a trip away or gotten home late to a dark house.  With kids, life is unpredictable!  Thanks to the iBright 7X, walking into a dark house is a thing of the past.  Using a iOS app which can be accessed on your iPhone or iPad you can turn on and off the outlets at the top as well as set a schedule for them.  There are two always on outlets which are perfect for things like a speaker, lamp next to the couch or more.  It also features USB charging for your devices as well as a Wi-Fi extender.  I never imagined that a surge protector could be so smart and make my life easier!  It also allows me to control technology use, because I can turn on and off wi-fi via the app which means that I don’t have to worry it’s being used without my permission.

iPhone Screenshot 1

I loved that if I knew I was running late or going to be home at a different schedule, I could just change the cloud schedule for my outlets (which I did mark in the app so I knew what I was turning on and off!) so I didn’t come home to a dark, empty house with two kids.  That’s the worst feeling ever!  Having the ability to turn on and off wi-fi is perfect for parents of older kids, because you can make sure they do their chores and other items.  I had to be in town this week and loved that I could turn on the lights via the app as I was getting off the train rather than coming home to a dark house.    We brought ours on vacation because no only is it a surge protector and provides extra outlets we could use it to charge our devices AND to  boost wi-fi.  One small device so many uses!  You can use your computer or tablet to create a schedule, track performance and hourly consumption for the various outlets on the device which makes it perfect to really understand what your true usage is.  I loved the ability to schedule the outlets so that they were on when I needed them and off when I didn’t – but that I could override them.

In terms of enhancements, I’d love it if the Wi-Fi extender worked with my 5G network.  My 5G network works in most of the house, but once you get outside, it stops working entirely.  I was able to connect my 2.5G Wireless network and boost it so now we can listen to music on the deck via Pandora or iTunes without having to worry about using my data!

Overall, this is a great product that you never knew you HAD TO HAVE!  I loved not having to come home to a dark house as well as the ability to switch on and off outlets and monitor electrical consumption.  It helped me keep a better eye on what lights I did or didn’t leave on and helped me be accountable to it.  I loved that I could bring one surge protector on vacation and charge my iPad/iPhone, boost my wi-fi and have more outlets at the same time!  it was a win win all around.
