A magical city-building app, built for little fingers

Sago Mini’s new app ‘Sago Mini Town’ launches April 13, turning preschoolers into pint-sized city planners. Inspired by classic city-building playmats, Town gives kids the building blocks to create the city of their dreams.  Four unique locations and dozens of animated story tiles – familiar landmarks like roads, houses, shops and nature – create endless creative combinations, and an intuitive drag and drop menu gives little ones the power to build (and rebuild) all on their own.

Expect visits from favourite Sago Mini characters – kids can move Jack, Jinja, Robin and Harvey around their towns to watch them transform! The characters may cruise by in a car, strut their stuff with a funny hat or explore the seas in a pirate ship. The more they play, the more hidden tiles they’ll uncover – like a volcano, rocket launcher or the ever-elusive rainbow treasure chest!

Other features:

  • Four unique locations spark storytelling

  • Drag and drop story tiles create endless combinations

  • Animated surprises are uncovered as kids play

  • Promotes explorative play and creative storytelling

  • No rules or time pressure — kids can explore at their own pace

  • No WiFi or internet needed to play – perfect for adventuring

  • Ideal for toddlers and preschoolers, ages 2-5

  • Whimsical artwork and custom sound design

  • No in-app purchases or third-party advertising

    What we love…

multiple ways to learn the letter as well as tracing and phonics activities

    What we’d love to see…

correction on the tracing activity if the letter is traced wrong or it goes off course

    Summary

Comprehensive alphabet app that goes beyond the traditional see the letter and say it to include tracing and phonics.  Top pick!

    Our Rating

    Zooper ABC Animals

Zooper ABC Animals by Zooper Dooper Edutainment Inc is a fun app for iOS that is designed for toddler through early preschool to teach them the alphabet as well as phonics and the sound of each letter.  This interactive app features 26 letters, with each featuring their own animated animal and rhyme.  After seeing the animal and the rhyme, you can trace upper and lower case versions of the letter and hear the different sounds the letter can make in a variety of placements within a word.  The app can be used with narration, or it can be used in silent mode if you are with your child and working with them 1:1.

    The app features:

    • Interactive rhyme that introduces your child to the letter sound
    • Tracing lesson both uppercase and lowercase letters
    • Guessing game to find objects that begin with the same letter as the animal such as ambulance or dolphin

iPhone Screenshot 2My toddler was a bit young for the app, but we looked at each of the letters (with the sound off) and I told him the name of the animal as well as the letter sound.  He enjoyed tapping on the screen and finding the animations.  For my older son, he still has trouble at times with sounding out words and phonics so I let him explore the app.  He enjoyed the “Zooper Dooper Bloopers” and the mistakes as well as listening to the different letters with the word.  I really liked that the app practiced a number of skills including object identification (the animal), tracing (both upper and lower case) as well as phonics.  I think that the phonics component makes the app unique and will help it appeal not only to parents of toddlers but those with other children who may be struggling with phonics.  The illustrations are fun and interactive and the narration is clear which is especially helpful when you have a child struggling with phonics or speech sounds.  My older son also enjoyed picking out the items that started with the specific letter as well.

    iPhone Screenshot 3

In terms of enhancements, it would be nice if the tracing activity showed if the letter was traced correctly or not.  Currently, you can trace the letter either on or off target and there is no feedback about if it was done correctly.  There is also no way to erase or undo if you go off course, other than exiting the page and going back.

Overall, this is a fun alphabet app which is a little bit different than the norm since it includes object identification, tracing and phonics activities.  This app is different from the norm of alphabet apps and takes learning to a fun and zany new level!  There is no external advertising or in-app purchase.  Comprehensive alphabet app that goes beyond the traditional see the letter and say it to include tracing and phonics.  Top pick!

Developer Interview with Jin Lee, Ph.D. founder of Qidza and creator of Baby Noggin

Today’s interview is with Jin Lee, Ph.D.  Please visit their website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Thank you for participating our interview. Please tell us a little about yourself.

Dr. Lee is an Oxford-trained child neuro-psychologist who founded 3 startups and worked in the innovation centers and venture capital funds of America’s 4th largest health insurance company (Humana) and 3rd largest nonprofit hospital system (Providence Health & Services). She has published multiple scientific articles on brain development and taught neuroscience and psychology at high school and colleges including Oxford. Dr. Lee also serves as an advisor for the XLerateHealth accelerator and the American Heart Association. She’s also an expecting mom.

How did the idea for your app come about?

“Soon after I said “I do” to my best friend and partner, we started planning for kids.

My husband asked, “Hon, when will the baby start seeing me?”

“Well, at birth they can only see in black and white. It’s not until about 3 months that they see in color and not until 6 months that they see as vividly as we do.” I replied with a smile, proud to find use for that Oxford PhD in my personal life.

“What about being able to crawl to me?”

“Ehhh, I think it’s about 8 months?” Pause. “I’m actually not sure.”

“What if our baby doesn’t crawl until much later? How soon should we worry?”

    Silence.

I was amazed that I, who once supervised Oxford medical students in developmental neuropsychology, could forget such a simple fact. And if I, with all my education, can’t keep track of these milestones, then how do parents do it?

So I chatted with friends who have young babies and asked them for tips and tricks on monitoring early baby development. Their answers were consistent:

“I just record the big events on my calendar, like when he starts crawling or walking.”

“And what if he doesn’t start walking until much later?” I was curious.

“Well, I wait ‘til my mommy-feeling tells me that something is wrong and then call my baby’s doctor.”

While I fared well under my own parents’ intuition and guidance, there has to be a better way to help today’s parents anticipate a baby’s next milestone, check for development, and follow-up.”

And how long was the process from the original idea to the release of the app?

I quit my Venture capital job in March and moved to Silicon valley. The app was launched in October.

Did you hire a developer or do it yourself?

I required a VP of engineer as a cofounder/ early employee.

What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in the development process?

It has been constantly revising mockups and perfecting our app so that parents is getting our message easily and the apps easing their lives

Have you had much support during the development process (from family, peers, Apple Inc.)?

The iOS 9 upgrade delayed our launch by 3 weeks! I did get support from my own family and teammates- without this app won’t exist.

What are your plans for the future? Will you be developing any more apps?

    ToddlerNoggin & ChildrenNoggin

What sort of feedback has your app been receiving so far?

    “-easy to do
    – great for my newborn
-great for tracking my premmies “

The app has been cited as easy to use, great for a new parent and tracking care of preemies.

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering creating their own app?

Do a lot of customer research and validation. They are your best friend and customers later on. The goal is building an app that people will use and if it’s good, they will help you promote it.

Thank you so much for talking with us today and sharing a bit about your company.  We really appreciated the chance to get to know you!

    What we love…

the cute characters and the different pretend play spots available

    What we’d love to see…

    nothing, we love it!

    Summary

This cute app is another beautifully made Sago Mini app that little ones will love!

    Our Rating

Sago Mini Babies by Sago Sago is an adorable new app little ones will love. Children aged 2 to 5 years old will love caring for their favourite Sago Mini characters, only this time the characters will be in their nappy/diaper.  The app encourages children via pretend play to do real life activities which range from feeding, bathing to dress up and more!  This is a great app for toddlers, preschoolers or a soon to be older brother or sister and will help them understand about their sibling to be.

We loved this cute app, it is very easy for little ones to use and so much fun! They get to choose from four baby characters and eight different pretend play activities. All they have to do is touch the little characters and slide them through the play areas and click on the little star near the activity to enter. Once inside the play area, they can interact with the characters and click on the arrow at the top of the activity to exit. They can feed, bathe, play, dress up and play music with their little character as well as put them down for a sleep or change their nappy/diaper.

My daughter loved the cute little pink bird Robin, she loved caring for her especially giving her a bottle, feeding her lots of baby food, bathing her and putting her down for her nap. She was quite happy going through each activity as they come and trying them out. This app is perfect practice for her as she will soon be a big sister!

There is nothing we would change about the app as both my daughter and I really enjoyed playing with it.  We could not fault this app as it very easy to use and is so well designed, nothing extra is needed!

This app has no in-app purchases or third-party advertising. It does however have a locked parents section with information about the app and a ‘more apps’ section that is also locked with a swipe request.

Like all Sago Mini apps, Sago Mini Babies has beautiful illustrations, sounds and quirky interactions and surprises for little ones to explore.  My daughter loved it especially Robin!
