What we love…

Depth and quality of content. Extremely customizable.

What we’d love to see…

Parental gating and a couple more customization options

Summary

A must-buy app for speech therapists but also for parents and others working with older children on building expressive language, higher order reasoning and life skills.

Our Rating

Conversation TherAppy

I love this app! There’s one feature that prevented me from giving it a 5 star rating – more on that later – but this is, in essence, a 5 star app. With Conversation TherAppy, Tactus Therapy Solutions has continued to do what it does best – develop high quality, easy to use, customizable apps that can be used with individuals across age groups. This app is perfect for adults and teens and is great for older children too – the developer recommends those aged 9 and up and I’d agree with that recommendation.

What Conversation TherAppy puts at your fingertips is a huge range of pictures and suggested questions that will allow you to work one-on-one or in groups, on eliciting expressive language, building and practicing conversation skills and also reasoning skills like inferences. All speech therapists could find uses for this app but it would also be a great addition to the toolkit of special needs teachers, all middle school and high school teachers, youth workers, caregivers of elderly people as well as parents of older children and teens.

You’ll note that, even though this app has lots of uses in a therapeutic context it’s possible uses extend far beyond therapy. Anyone who could use support in discussing topics that are often difficult to broach could utilize this app as a starting point. Topics as broad as aging, sexual health and identity, police brutality, drug use, car seats and online shopping are all touched on, but don’t be alarmed, the topics are fully customizable by age range.

iPhone Screenshot 2

The home screen is where your customization and user experience begins. A brief tutorial takes you through the major features of the app but detailed help is always accessible via the info button on the top left of the screen. Connect allows you to visit Tactus Therapy Solutions on Facebook and Twitter, sign up for their email newsletter and review Conversation TherAppy on the App Store. You can also tap on Other Apps to browse the developer’s other offerings on the App Store. Therapists will want to set up their clients in the User Hub, and Settings is where you customize the app to suit each user’s individual needs.

There are currently four language options with more to come – English (North American), French, Portuguese and Zulu. You can select the number of trials, scoring sounds and toggle links on and off. For me the most important setting options are: the ability to input email addresses so that results are automatically shared with others, Content filtering where you can choose if you want topics to appear that are appropriate for children, teens or adults and then the Customization Database.

This database lets you go to town with respect to customization. You can turn topics off or on so, for example, maybe you don’t want to discuss couponing with your child or, perhaps you want to add the topic of divorce into a child’s database because it’s something they’re experiencing right now. Even better, you can edit the text of the questions themselves which is a fantastic feature.

Once you’ve set everything up and you start the app, the client or group is shown a picture. Tactus always uses incredibly high quality, clear, pictures in their apps and this one is no exception. There are ten different buttons either side of the picture which represent different conversational prompts: Describe, Define, Remember, Decide, Feel, Infer, Predict, Narrate, Evaluate and Brainstorm. Score client’s responses and check on their progress via the User Hub.

iPhone Screenshot 3

There is so much to like about this app:

  • Not sure if it’s the right fit for you? No problem, just download the free Lite version and give it a try.
  • The pictures are not only crisp and clear but well chosen – each one I looked at prompted an emotional reaction in me – they are designed to really engage folks in conversation.
  • The depth and breadth of the topics and the artfully written conversational prompts.
  • Perfect for adults and teens but great for older children as well.
  • Data tracking, reporting (in graph form even!) and results sharing
  • More customization options than you can shake a stick at.

There are however a couple of suggestions I’d like Tactus to consider for future updates:

  • Tactus makes it crystal clear on their website that this app isn’t designed to be used by children unsupervised. Fair enough, but in the real world that’s not always possible. My kids like to play with my iPad simply because it’s mine and I can’t supervise them every single second. One of the strengths of this app is that there is hard-hitting content but a lot of that content is something I don’t want my 7 year-olds stumbling across. The only solution for me right now is to delete the app from my iPad when they want to use it. I’d so appreciate it if they considered a simple form of gating that the Information, Connect, Other Apps and Settings options would be behind. This would also have the benefit of cleaning up the Home screen and make it less busy.
  • I would love if there was the option to add your own picture and questions or at least a way to submit requests for additions to the developer. It may be that I simply couldn’t find it but I searched in vain for a picture covering the topic of death. I think this would be an invaluable addition, not just for discussion with children if a friend, relative or beloved pet dies or is dying, but for adults also – do they want a living will in place, what are their wishes with respect to resuscitation in the event of a medical crisis, etc.
  • People often learn more from watching than reading so a how-to use video in the Info section would be a welcome addition.

In summary, this is a wonderful app with a huge amount of quality content and so many possible uses. It’s well worth the current price of $24.99. Highly recommended!

The Mighty League Vol 1 – The Terrible Taunting – A Blackfish Children’s Book by Customizabooks LLC – Review

Mighty League Vol 1

What we love…

Great story, fantastic job of explaining what being in the spectrum is like, customizable, highly interactive.

What we’d love to see…

Female narration when a female character is chosen, custom narration for speech bubbles.

Summary

An excellent book for everyone that promotes awareness of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome , encourages acceptance and understanding, and talks about tools that those in the spectrum can use to manage their day.

Our Rating

Geek Club Books, a company that specializes in products that promotes self-acceptance in children who are deemed different because they are in the autism spectrum, has done a remarkable job with their new book The Mighty League Volume 1: The Terrible Taunting. It is the first book in what will likely be a series of books based on the actual experiences of a boy who grew up with Asperger’s Syndrome. It is highly interactive and is presented in a comic book format.

There are many things noticeable in this book. The first thing you will notice, upon opening the app, is that it is customizable. You can choose whether you want the main character to be a hero (Jman) or a heroine (Jaycee). You can also record the narration using your own voice. Second, you will notice that it comes with a lively, upbeat music that goes amazingly well with the story. Third, you will notice that it beautifully illustrated. Finally, you will notice that every page in this book is filled with interactive items and interactive speech bubbles. Clicking on the main character’s hedgehog sidekick will bring up a notebook or journal that explains more about what having Asperger’s is like.

20131002-232954.jpgAs a mom of a boy with autism, this book is very dear to my heart. I think the best thing about it is that it is based on the real life adventures of Jonathan Murphy who grew up with Asperger’s Syndrome. The story is written by Jonathan’s sister Molly and is narrated by Jonathan himself! Some of the things the character goes through are similar to what my son goes through and I love that he can relate to it. It also gives us ideas on how to help him manage his day and how to handle difficult situations like stopping the school bully. This was good to read not only with my son but with my other children as well. My children already love their brother just the way he is, but this book gave them an even better understanding of what things are like for him.

20131002-233617.jpgThere are only a few things I would like to see in the future. Since the narration is done in the first person, I would like to see it narrated by a female when a female character is chosen. I also think it might be fun for the kids to be able to record their own voice for the speech bubbles. Lastly, I was a tad uncomfortable with the mom in the story never facing the main character. Her back was always turned even when addressing him. She was the only character whose face we did not see.

20131002-232203.jpg

Overall, I think this book is great and I highly recommend it to everyone. It promotes autism awareness , encourages acceptance and understanding, and talks about tools that those in the spectrum can use to manage their day. Be sure to also check out the Geek Club Books website. It is a full of resources and information on autism and spectrum disorders and is packed with lots and lots of love!

To celebrate the launch of a new app in the storysmart series of apps on Social Language Skills – Ruby Gets in the Game, Ruby Cube Inc. is giving away promo codes for their first 2 storysmart apps – Trudy Goes to the Beach and Casey’s Big Day.

photo (3)

Trudy Goes to the Beach

Trudy is taking a beach trip with her family. Can she make expected choices when her sensory system is overloaded and she’s on a different schedule? What if things don’t go her way? She needs your help to make smart and safe choices!

Casey's Big Day

Casey’s Big Day

Casey has many worries and frustrations on his first day of 5th grade. He will need your help to keep his body in control, keep thoughts inside his head, and keep his cool as he navigates his day in class, in the cafeteria, and on the playground. You can do it, Casey!

DESCRIPTION
With storysmart™, our innovative suite of animated story apps, your child can learn important social language skills. Blending clinical expertise with clutter-free design to create an engaging platform which focuses on social expectations, storysmart™ apps were developed by a husband and wife team who have a daughter with high-functioning autism. The combined passions of an experienced speech language pathologist and an award-winning designer come together to support communication skills for this ever-growing population of children.

USE YOUR SOCIAL SMARTS!
storysmart™ users engage in a real-life story — a day in the life of our quirky, adorable characters, but they have to help our characters solve problems, comprehend the setting, and use their social smarts to resolve the story and get positive feedback. The primary goal of the storysmart™ apps is to raise the user’s awareness of social expectations and to stimulate critical thinking skills to achieve the best outcomes in those settings.

“Finally, there’s an app that helps children with HFA learn about social expectations! The founders of rubycube have perfectly blended design geared towards visual thinkers and clinical expertise to create a solid product that addresses the core deficit of children on the spectrum.”
Dr. Gary Mesibov – Former Director TEACCH, UNC Chapel Hill

App features:
– PERSONALIZED AUDIO FEEDBACK
Users’ own sounds are played as feedback after each choice is made – both positive and negative. This provides a humorous and personal auditory reinforcement of the choices the user makes.

– MULTI-SENSORY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
storysmart™ presents a learning environment whereby the user can actively modify parts of the story – the character’s words, actions and behaviors – to correct what’s unexpected and achieve the best possible outcomes.

– MORE THAN ONE SOLUTION, JUST LIKE REAL LIFE
storysmart™ gives the user multiple paths by which they can appropriately resolve social situations instead of providing a single solution. Like real life, there is more than one way to achieve the expected outcome!

– ACTIONS, WORDS AND BEHAVIORS DEMONSTRATED
storysmart™ provides a variety of familiar social scenarios in which hundreds of unexpected choices occur, each one visually demonstrated to reinforce the consequences of those choices. As the user freely modifies each choice, the visuals change to reflect and provide context for the new choice. They can literally see the effects of their choices.

– RECORD YOUR OWN VOICE WHILE YOU READ
To aid with reading fluency, users can record their own voice while they read and then play it back to check their accuracy.

– NUANCED CHOICES HELP TO PROMPT CONTEXTUAL AWARENESS
storysmart™ provides a menu of phrases which the user can modify with existing phrases. Some phrases will seem appropriate, but may be out of context with that situation. The user needs to attend to contextual cues in order to interpret those choices and select one that best fits. The app also provides controls to adjust the level of challenge for the user.

– ENGAGING BUT NOT OVERSTIMULATING
Stories are accompanied by animated graphics which reinforce the context of each setting and are designed not to visually overwhelm the user. The music is designed to have a calming effect and to keep the user engaged in the activity.

– CLUTTER-FREE INTERFACE FOR VISUAL THINKERS
The storysmart™ interface is specifically designed to facilitate the learning experience by minimizing clutter on the screen. App controls and navigation can be hidden during use which enables the user to stay focused on the content.

What we love…

great app for helping children understand the sequences of getting ready for “big kid school” as well as the steps required

What we’d love to see…

more academic ties such as story time, numbers, letters, coloring and other activities typically seen in a kindergarten classroom

Summary

Perfect app for Moms and Dads to use with their “big kids” as they help them get ready to start school in the fall.

Our Rating

Bo's School DayBo’s School Day is a new universal app for iOS by Heppi Apps.  The app features Bo the Giraffe as he begins kindergarten and walks you through the steps in order to get ready for school.  The step by step process includes: packing a lunch box and backpack, singing the “days of the week” song, making music, playing tap music outside, have lunch, building with blocks, music class, cleaning up toys/classroom, leaving to go home which are completed in sequential order or you can skip to your favorite site.  The app includes voiceovers in English, German and Dutch and the English one is very well done indeed!  The app is designed for young preschoolers through young elementary school children as is a wonderful way to introduce the concept of school to a child who will be attending for the first time.

This is a fantastic app for teaching kids the steps necessary in order to get ready for school and was very helpful as I’ve been preparing my soon to be kindergartener for “big kid” school.  We used this app to discuss what we need to do in order to get ready for school in the morning which included packing lunch and a snack as well as getting ready for school.  He also loved building with blocks which he told me reminded him of building with Lego’s as well as cleaning up the toys because it was a game.  The graphics in the app are bright and colorful and invite children to tap on them and test out what can be done – either by their own exploration or the spoken directions.  In preschool, my son used to dress “Weather Walter” and pick out the right outfit for him based on the weather outside – this was a fun way to set the weather but it would be even more fun if you could pick accessories like a rain hat or a winter jacket based upon the weather forecast for the day.

In terms of enhancements – I’d like to see a getting to school either via car or bus routine as many children arrive in different manners and it might be helpful for them to understand.  In addition, having a “saying goodbye to a parent” but knowing they would come back is another suggestion.  I’d also like to see more academic materials such as numbers, letters and the ability to build bigger towers via pattern matching to the app.  It would also be great if a calendar function was included so you could count up or down to specific dates at school like “100 days of school” or a holiday or other events like that.  Other scenes to include would be an art scene with markers, crayons and art supplies as well as a story time circle where you could hear the teacher read a story to Bo and his classmates.

This app has helped my son start looking forward to his kindergarten year and helped me realize that he will be familiar with the routines in getting ready and going to school.  I know we will be looking at the app many more times as we gear up for school which starts next week.  This app is currently on sale for today only for $0.99 before going up to $2.99 so be sure to grab it before the price goes up.   There are other great apps featuring Bo including: Bo’s Dinnertime, Bo’s Jigsaw, and Bo’s Bedtime all of which work on sequencing routines.   These are also great expressive speech therapy apps as you can encourage your child to describe what they are seeing and doing while playing with the app.

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. They have a variety of devices including an iPad, iPhone, and an iPod and is often found with a device! My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
