ConversationBuilder by Mobile Education Store –Review & Giveaway #BHSM

For Better Hearing and Speech Month 2015 we have 2 copies of this app to give away. We reviewed it in 2011, you can read our full review below.

20111105-172332.jpgConversation Builder is part of the Builder series of Language apps from Mobile Education Store, which was founded by Kyle Thomson, to create engaging language apps for children with high functioning Autism. In doing so he has created a range of apps that are not only suitable for children on the autism spectrum, but for any child needing to work on their language skills.

The app includes a very detailed instruction page, which explains all of its features and also includes a link to a video tutorial. Before you can start to use the app you need to create a user profile including name, age, city and interests, this information is used to personalise the app for the individual student.

The concept is simple – the student sees a photograph of a child engaging in an activity, and then has a conversation with the child based on the activity. At each turn the student has to choose from 3 responses, and pick the best one for moving the conversation forward in a natural way. If they choose an inappropriate response they are gently redirected to try again, once they have the correct response they can record themselves, and then hear a pre-recorded response. This pattern is repeated, and then the student gets to play back the whole conversation – and basically hears themselves conversing with the child in the picture. This provides incredible feedback – they just love to hear themselves having a successful 2-way conversation.

20111105-200111.jpgYou can continue on this level or increase the conversation length to 8 utterances (4 from the student and 4 pre-recorded). The app can also be used in a group setting, where instead of the app providing the responses it just gives a picture to start the conversation and then the iPad is passed from child to child for their part of the conversation, and then they can listen to the recording of the whole conversation. You can also save or email recorded conversations.

This is a wonderful app on many levels – it teaches the nuances of conversation e.g. how it’s often better to ask a question rather than just make an observation, how to stay on topic but also when it’s OK to introduce a new subject. It also helps by teaching ways to initiate a conversation and how to keep the conversation flowing naturally. Learning how to have a real 2-way conversation with your peers is a really important life-skill, but it can be hard to master. Trying to learn these skills by role-playing with adults or their peers can be a very awkward and painful experience, but by doing this with the iPad it becomes fun. Having the material presented in a visual as well is auditory format is also very helpful.

This app is very useful for special needs children who need extra help with their social skills, but it is also an incredibly useful tool for any child who needs help in developing their conversational skills. Being able to freely converse with their peers is a very important skill that many normally developing children also struggle with, and it is hugely important for helping to build and maintain friendships.

20111105-200120.jpgThe app includes 160 conversations. I highly recommend this app as it has really helped my own shy 7 year old with his conversational skills.

Easy to use, unlimited pages in books, unlimited books and authors, very customizable, ability to choose image by sounds -initial, medial & final, ability to add your own images and narration.

What we’d love to see…

Layout templates for beginning users, option to create a layout for the entire book at the onset

An easy to use storybook creator with multiple authors and unlimited books. As a Speech Language Pathologist I love that I can create books for home practice for each and every child on my caseload, and have the child’s input, allowing the kids to take ownership of their home practice.

Our Rating

My Story for Speech and LanguageMy Story is the newest app for speech and language from Pocket SLP.  The app is designed for adults and children to create and share stories. The interface is extremely user friendly and lends itself well to cooperative projects. It is available as a free version with in-app purchase, and a full version with no in-app purchases. The free version allows 1 author, 2 books and images from 2 categories; the full version has unlimited authors and books, all images and dropbox synchronization. This review is of the full version.

I love how easy this My Story is to use and to teach others how to use. The simplicity of use is an asset from the beginning. Right from the home page, the mechanics of the app are self explanatory. The platform makes it easy to find your way around the different parts of the app and the multiple different ways to embellish and individualize the pages of the book.  There are unlimited pages per book.

OI have tried this app with kids as young as 5 and as old as 11.  Everyone loved it. Their true creativity came through! The students asked if they could add to their books and even shared their editing skills on others projects.  They loved that their books can be shared on social media and that the books can be saved to Dropbox. My Story app allows for multiple users.

As a Speech Language Pathologist I love that I can create books for home practice for each and every child on my caseload, and have the child’s input. It allows the kids to take ownership of their home practice.  The stories can be edited from week to week, to allow new pages to be added. Once the book is completed there is an option to view, edit or share. The “view” is done in slideshow form.

Each page can be customized for background color, font, and images (size, position).  There are a bunch of preloaded pictures available and you can also add your own images. The preloaded images can be viewed by category (alphabetically within a category) and even by sounds these are organized by position in words (initial, medial and final). There is also an option to draw and write (thick or thin lines) on each page. One of my favorite features (and the children also) is the ability to record audio to go with the images in the book.

iPhone Screenshot 3

There isn’t really much I didn’t like about this app. I would like to see some layout templates for beginning users. Some of the kids got really caught up in the placement and choices available to them.  It would also be nice to have an option to create a layout for the entire book at the onset. This way little time is wasted on restructuring each page. While you can copy and paste individual images, on the same page, the chance to paste to another page would also be nice. A standard template would be a good option as well, much like the project or presentation apps that are commercially available. Another addition that might be fun would be the ability to add a soundtrack in addition to the current ability to record narration.

Overall, I highly recommend this app for classroom, therapy and home. Teachers can modify for specific academic goals, Speech Pathologists can adapt for various individualized goals, and families can create stories and memories for their children to talk about and bring back to school for discussions. The app has unlimited potential for kids creativity and most important the kids are fully engaged and become active participants in their learning and therapy experiences. 5/5 stars for My Story app!!

My Playhome School by My Playhome Software – Review

What we love…

tons of amazing interactive objects, limitless play, excellent speech therapy tool

What we’d love to see…

a gymnasium and music room

A toy schoolhouse app loaded with interactive objects that is sure to delight children, no matter how old they are.

Our Rating

My PlayHome SchoolOne of the best loved toys of all time are doll houses. It brings hours upon hours of enjoyment to boys and girls alike, and it’s only limitation is a child’s imagination. My PlayHome Software Ltd has brought this enjoyment in the most portable form possible in My PlayHome, My PlayHome Stores, and very recently, My PlayHome School.

While my children and I enjoyed My PlayHome and My PlayHome Stores, My PlayHome School far exceeded our expectations. It has almost everything you could find in an elementary school: a receptionist desk, the principal’s office, a cafeteria, boys and girls restrooms, a science lab, an auditorium, a janitor’s closet, lockers, and of course, classrooms.

There are tons of awesome interactive objects throughout the school that kids are sure to love. I will highlight a few things in each room. In the receptionist desk, there is a copy machine that prints something when you click on it. In the principal’s office is a working PA system that plays back whatever you say. There are also cups you can fill up with coffee and creamer. In the cafeteria, you can take a tray and fill it up with food and drinks. It is rigged so that you never spill food on your tray or the floor. In the boys and girls rooms are mirrors that actually show reflection. In the auditorium is a stage where you can change background props and control the curtains. In the science lab, there are chemicals you can mix together and fire up on the Bunsen burner. In the classrooms are books that you can open and write on with pencils. The janitor supplies let you clean grime and dirt wherever they may be found.

I love that you can drag the characters through each room very easily. They are also able to “hold” things and take it with them wherever they go. I also love that all three PlayHome apps connect with each other in-app. Characters can walk outdoors to get to school. the stores, and back home. I have also found this app to be an excellent tool to elicit speech with my son who has autism, It helps him with work on his articulation and conversation skills.

The only thing I can think of that is missing in the school is a gymnasium and perhaps a music room with different kinds of instruments. Still, I love it the way it is and I give it my highest recommendation. If your children love doll houses, then they are going to absolutely love My PlayHome School.

I Can Have Conversations With You!™ by Autism Breakthrough Solutions, LLC – Review and Giveaway

What we love…

Clear audio prompts, plenty of examples for modeling speech, uses positive reinforcements.

What we’d love to see…

Option to disable audio and return to different sections of the module, debug child lock.

This is a great app for helping children learn how to initiate and engage in meaningful conversations.

Our Rating

I Can Have Conversations With You, an app developed by ASHA certified speech language pathologist Karen Kabaki-Sisto, M.S. CCC-SLP., aims to help verbal children with autism engage in meaningful conversations. It can also be used by children with other speech and language disorders.

The app contains one conversational module, which is basically one conversational scenario. The scenario involves a young girl who is telling her dad about the day she had with her grandpa. As she and her dad take turns speaking, children analyze whether the words they use are correct or incorrect in relation to their conversation. There are 8 speaking turns in all, each taking approximately 30-45 minutes to complete. Additional modules may be purchased after the initial module is completed.

The conversational module is very thorough. It begins with a slide show of photos and videos that show who, what, where, when, and why the conversation takes place. Each conversational partner’s speaking turn includes several examples of correct and incorrect words.

Children also get to role-play as the conversational partner and record themselves as they speak. There are also plenty of audio-visual reinforcements that will delight children as they progress through the module. At the end, parents can access a results page that includes a progress report and recommendations for other skill appropriate modules.

I used this app with my ten year old son who has autism. He loved the photos and videos. He listened to the audio prompts and understood them easily. He was excited by the audio-visual rewards and looked forward to seeing what would come up next. Unfortunately, his interest in the app dropped after about just a minute of use, and I believe it was because he was seeing the same photo at every screen and was being asked essentially the same question over and over again. Repetition is a great tool in therapy, but I don’t believe it translates as well in an app that is designed for a child’s independent use. One thing that would have been helpful for my son, since he is able to read much quicker than listening to the audio prompts, is to have the option of disabling the audio and timed responses so that he could move through the app at his own pace. Also, I would like to have the option for the parent to allow the child to skip to the role play section, and to return to the lesson as necessary.

The child lock also needs some debugging. The child lock requires parents to enter the missing letters in a sentence. The first problem is that when the missing letter is at the end of a word, you cannot enter it in. The second is that you can only use lower case letters even if it is a proper name and normally would be capitalized. Otherwise, this is one of the best child lock methods I have seen in an app.

Overall, I think I Can Have Conversations With You is a very helpful and useful. While it did not work as well for my son as I had hoped, it may be exactly what another child loves and needs. After all, every child is different and I do think this app is an excellent tool to have. I would suggest having a free version of this app so that parents can check it out before making a purchase. I am still going to use this for my son even if he uses it only for a few seconds each day because I believe it will help him become a better communicator.
