Family Orbit – Family Locator by AppObit LLC – Review

What we love…

easy to use cross-platform app that allows sharing of locations, photos, speeding (for kids) and more

What we’d love to see…

better use of the “panic mode” as well as a way to set both highway and side road speeds for the speed alert currently it’s a one size fits all

Summary

Overall, this is a great cross platform solution to keeping track of your family and will be perfect for events or the weekends. The GPS does drain your battery faster than I would have liked, but it’s a useful app.

Our Rating

Family Orbit – Family Locator, Parental Control & Your Private Family Network is a universal app designed for iOS that features the ability to find the location of other family members, monitor photos taken on the camera roll, the ability to “check in” with family to show them you have arrived on time to the right place, group messaging, panic alerts and more.  For purposes of the review, I tested Family Orbit with the in-app premium package ($4.99/month).

The app allows you to set family photo albums including a gallery where you can share photos, family places (such as schools, workplaces) and invite your family members to participate.  I tested the app using both iOS and Android as my husband has an Android smartphone.  There is also a panic which will send a SMS or call 911 with your location in an emergency,  Currently, once you hit the button you have 10 seconds to choose either to call 911 or find which family member is near you.  Parents are also able to “go invisible” so your location can not be tracked and you can not see the contents.  Children are not able to choose this.   You can also turn on the “speed alert” which you set to above x miles per hour – so if your child is on a road in a car and it is going higher than the speed limit you get a text or email alert.

I liked the ability to see where my son was, I gave him my old iPhone and made sure he stayed within wireless range or gave him my wi-fi hot spot to test out the usage.  He went over to a friends house and I liked that I could open up the app and see where he was.  The ability for him to check in and send me a message when he was ready to be picked up was a nice feature as well – we tried it in a few different places and I got an alert that he was done with his playdate or at the friends house and was waiting.  When I got the alert it told me the address or approximate location to arrive to.

I did try to use the “panic” mode a few times and if I didn’t tap within the 10 second window, I had to exit and re-open the app. The challenge with the speed alert is that it doesn’t differentiate if you are on a side road (30 MPH zone) versus a highway (65+ MPH).  If you had a new driver and knew they were only supposed to be on side roads with a lower speed limit that would be a good way to use the app, but right now my kids are young enough that they are not driving.  I will say that since the app used GPS technology both my husband and I found that it did bring the battery down on our smartphones, so I would only have it open when you are actually using it rather than in the background.  I would like to see a discount model introduced for families that might use it for six months as the in-app purchase automatically renews and it’s nice to have predictability.

Overall, this app is a good cross-platform use of family tracking and keeping your photos safe.  I can see it being very helpful if you have older children who are on the go or if you are at an event like a concert or road race where you might be separated.  I really enjoyed the “check in” so I could be sure my family was safe and the ability to do it across platforms.

As someone who loves to take pictures and put their own spin on it – I really enjoyed playing with this app.  I reminded me of Instragram but was better since I could put my own text on the photo at the moment of time rather than having to take the photo, play with the image and then put the tags onto it.  I really liked that the app emphasized highlighted words and added a funkiness to the text while making it meaningful to my photo.  Users can comment and like Quips from within the app as well as on your various social media channels.

I do wish the audio sound when you someone says, “mm” to your quip was a bit different.  The first time I heard it, I thought that someone hadn’t liked my post.  Perhaps a small applause or even a thumbs up option would be good.  I would also like to be able to shut off the audio sound as well.

This is an app that I see parent’s using more than younger children just because of the access to social media, however, I can see teachers using it for a classroom or perhaps to create visuals.  This app is fun to play with and addictive – I think you will be seeing more of it in my Facebook and social media feeds.
