Bogga Jewel by Boggatap – Review

What we love…

beautifully  illustrated app that encouraged kids to “catch” the treasure

What we’d love to see…

ability to have multiple players, turn off the “three miss and you are done” rule especially for younger players

Summary

Overall, this is a fun app aimed at preschool aged children through early elementary school. I liked that it helped my son work on his “prediction” skills as well as figuring out which way to move to capture the bucket.

Our Rating

Bogga Jewel iconBogga Jewel from Boggatap is a universal app for iOS which features two different characters, a fun fishing game where you “catch” the prize as well as learn about recycling your catch.  Boggatap is a game studio based in Oslo, Norway who creates digital toys for devices. Skills practiced within the app include patterning, fine motor, attention/reaction, counting, concentration and prediction of what might come up next.  This app is best aimed at preschool although my eight year old did enjoy it for a short period of time.

Game play is straightforward – you are on a boat with either a boy or girl character.  Once you pick the character you click either the left arrow or right arrow to fish for boots and “treasures”.  As your skills increase so does the speed of the game and you must move faster to complete the levels.  As my son’s skills improved he went from using one hand to tap both arrows to positioning his hands to be able to touch both arrows while holding the iPad.

One of my favorite things about the app was the bright colorful ocean scene as well as the ability to pick your own character.  My older son quickly got the moves down to position his character in place to catch the treasure.  He quickly positioned both hands on the arrows so he could catch treasures more quickly and earn rewards.  The colors were bright and there is a lot of great interaction and items you can earn including a crown, trophy and more!  He also enjoyed catching the rocks so he could weight down the net to earn more treasures.  He also liked recycling at the end of the level – especially making pails.  This wasn’t something that was immediately apparent to him when he first played, but he looked forward to it at the end of each level.

In terms of improvements, I wish there was a multi-player mode so you didn’t have to reset each time if a different child played.  My son did also get frustrated at times with the three miss rule which meant you had to restart a level if you missed more than three items, perhaps there could be a toggle which lets you turn off this for those just learning.  My son also wished he could create his own avatar which looked like him which might be a fun enhancement in the future.

There are no in-app purchases or advertising.  There is a parental gated area (tap the key) where you can access social media, subscribe via email, rate and review as well as reset the app.   The app is COPPA compliant.

Overall, this is a fun app aimed at preschool aged children through early elementary school. I liked that it helped my son work on his “prediction” skills as well as figuring out which way to move to capture the bucket.

Art Gurus by Colto – Review

screen art gurus

Art Gurus by Colto is a drawing app geared towards children under five years old. In this app, a scrollable classroom scene unfolds where we find some items that are missing color. Children are invited and encouraged to decorate, color or draw on these items as they wish and see their creations added to the scene.

What we love…

Simple to use, fun to see art come alive on the scene, it encourages creativity and imagination.

What we’d love to see…

More stickers, black crayon and pencil tool.

Summary

A simple drawing app that encourages children’s creativity.

Our Rating

When children tap on the items, a set of three drawing tools appear: crayons, stickers and a magic wand. The crayons come with 15 colors, perhaps to keep the little ones from being too overwhelmed. However, I noticed that black wasn’t one of them, and I wish this was included as it is standard in many crayon boxes. Like the crayons, there are only a few stickers to choose from, 18 all together. I like the selection they have, but would like to see more added in a future update. The magic wand is a tool that decorates items instantly. It can be pressed repeatedly to see the item decorated differently each time. In addition to these great tools, I would like to see colored pencils included for finer drawing or writing.

I like this app because it is very simple for little ones. It encourages them to be creative, and seeing their creations appear in the classroom is great motivation. I like that they are able to save a photo of the whole classroom by clicking on the camera icon on the page. There are external links in this app, but children are prevented from accessing with a parental lock. Be aware that if your child can read, he or she can easily open the parent lock.

I would recommend Art Gurus for very young children who like to color and who are just beginning to draw.

Kudos to you if you have been sharing nursery rhymes with your children to help develop their language skills and to teach them early math concepts like counting and sequencing. Children love nursery rhymes, and besides singing and acting out the rhymes, we can use these rhymes to engage our kids in educational activities that further develop their cognitive skills.

What we love…

Familiar nursery rhymes that kids love.

What we’d love to see…

Include lyrics for singing along and have all child-protected external links accessible from one place.

Kids can either play along or sing along with these rhymes. To play the activities, kids tap the ‘play’ button from the main screen or from the sing-along section. The play section is a scrollable world full of characters from the rhymes. Each character will bring you to an activity that relates to the rhyme, as evident in the setting, characters and background music used in the activity. Within each activity, there are 2 buttons – one for repeating the instructions and the other to switch the audio to the instrumental version of the rhyme (perfect for singing along).

There is a variety of activities included like matching, puzzles, maze, spot-the-difference, stickers, dress-up and simple endless runner games. The activities are age appropriate and short, each start with prompts to help kids take their first step towards success. Once a game is completed, kids are rewarded with fireworks and then the app moves on automatically to the next rhyme activity. The games are different each time an activity is repeated.

These activities are designed to help develop skills like attention, memory, visual discrimination, visual spatial understanding, hand-eye coordination, letter and color recognition, one-to-one correspondence and counting. It’s learning and entertainment combined in one app!

For breaks in between learning sessions, kids can tap on the radio icon to listen to the 20 nursery rhymes playing on a loop. Alternatively, they can search through the rhymes and pick on their favourites.

The catchy tunes and repetitive nature of nursery rhymes make them great memory aids for our kids. Kids love them because the stories are often funny. Pairing them with learning activities is a clever way to get our kids interested and stay engaged. Snot & Fluff – A Space Adventure by OhNoo Studio – Review

What we love…

beautiful illustrations, music and fun story which encourages kids to use their imaginations as well as the tale of friendship

What we’d love to see…

ability to turn off the sound with the exception of the narration, collection spot for the stars and items that have been found through the story

Summary

My son hopes that there will be more Snot & Fluff adventures to see them journey through the galaxy now that they are back together.  He can’t wait to see what additional imaginative adventures that the two come up with on their journey!

Our Rating

Snot & Fluff - A Space Adventure Snot & Fluff by Onhnostudio is a whimsical space themed adventure story where Spot dreams of journey’s and Fluff is a cook testing new recipes.  The two are good friends and Snot decides to go on a space adventure to see if he can learn more about the galaxy who catches a comet with a lasso and gets ready for his adventure!  Unfortunately, Snot forgot to leave Fluff a note, and set off on his journey.  Fluff begins to get worried when he sees Snot fly away without his friend on the comet and he gets very sad about thoughts of losing his friend.  Fluff begins to tidy the cottage and decides to put together a space rocket to find Fluff – but he does improvise a bit while building it using his culinary creations including sticky custard to put the pieces together.  The app is designed for preschool through early elementary school and is gender neutral and appealed to both boys and girls when I tested it with them.   You can also page through and skip pages in the book to move to your favorite portion of the story.

iPad Screenshot 4

I love the beautiful illustrations of the book as well as the interactive elements and music on each page.  Some of the pages have mini puzzles like performing a series of tasks or collecting hidden stars (there are 88) to unlock a hidden page at the end of the book!  I also loved the imagination that was used throughout the story like using sticky custard to put together the space ship which was both smart and a great way to improvise to get the space ship put together.  My son also liked the hands that turned the pages.   Snot also goes on a mission to find a missing key for the pirates and after accomplishing the mission begins to miss his friend Fluff and his great desserts. The book has a theme of friendship as Snot and Fluff try to reunite.  The book is narrated and you can repeat the audio by tapping on the page after it is completed.  I also loved all the plays on words like “King Jelly”, “Broccoli Bandits”.  Snot heads to the Candinext planet to rescue his friend Fluff and the two are reunited!  Fluff is there making sweets and is very happy to see his friend.  Fluff tries to fix the kings missing horn – a task many have failed at and been put into jail using one of his confectionery creations which is successful!

In terms of improvements, my son asked for a counter or somewhere to keep his stars that he collected as well as the items that Snot lost including the pipe organ.  I would like a way to turn off the sounds/narration if a child didn’t want to hear them and wanted to simply focus on the text, currently I turned down my device but that meant that my son couldn’t hear the story.

There are external links including to the app store, but they are protected with a parental gate.  The story is available to be read and narrated in English, Polish, Russian, Chinese, and Spanish.

My son hopes that there will be more Snot & Fluff adventures to see them journey through the galaxy now that they are back together.  He’s currently busy drawing his own intergalactic adventure and wants to know the secret of the Broccoli Bandits!  This is a fun and imaginative book that encourages kids to touch and solve puzzles throughout the story and reunites the two friends Snot & Fluff.
