Aluminium Alloy Outdoor Laser Christmas Lights with IR Wireless Remote by 1byone – Review

What we love…

easy set up and ready to use within moments versus stringing lights and then having to stand in the snow to take them down

What we’d love to see…

ability for the laser light to remember the previous settings

Easy to use laser light that makes setting up holiday lights a snap both inside and out!  No more wading in the snow banks!

Our Rating

Living in New England means that setting up holiday lights and decorations can either be a freezing cold activity or it might be one you try to hurry through to get it done and hope it doesn’t snow too much!

1byone offers an outdoor laser Christmas light that includes a remote, you can can set up the holiday decorations in one moment without having to worry about frozen fingers or the fact that you might stand in several feet of snow to take them down at the end of December.  Inside the books is a laser light whcih includes (red, green and an alternating red/green) laser light, as well as a bracket to place it in the ground and  a power adapter.  You stick the spike inside the ground after attaching it to the laser light connect the power and in less than five minutes the laser light show is ready to go.  The best part – in my opinion is that you can also control it from inside and use a timer to make it automatically come on and turn off as well as change the colors with just a touch of the remote.

I really liked how quick and easy it was to set up outside and put into my lawn.  I also liked that it was controlled via remote control and that I could use a grounded electrical cord to provide power to the laser light.  I will say that I have installed and taken it out a few times when I knew it was going to rain (even though I didn’t have to) just because I wanted to test out all the different settings.   The projector is waterproof and can be used both inside and outside – so perhaps you could have Christmas in July if you wished!  I also liked that it doesn’t use too much electricity.  I also really liked the automatic function which meant that the unit would automatically turn off in bright light/sunshine or turn on in the dark.

In terms of enhancements, I wish there was a short memory that allowed the unit to remember what you did if you have to unplug it.  Currently, if you unplug it you have to start over again in the programming process.

Overall, I am looking forward to setting this up outside my house around Thanksgiving during the holiday season to have holiday lights on.  It will be fast and easy to set up and since I’ve already tested it out quite a bit it won’t be bad to get the settings right and the holiday mood fast.  Perfect for the busy family or someone who might live in a climate where the weather isn’t always predictable!

Review of the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Range Extender Model EX7000

NetgearRange ExtenderDisclaimer: I am a NETGEAR Ambassador and I received this product in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion and review.

The Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Range Extender is a great way to #elimatedeadspots. Set up is really easy and fast especially with a WPS button. It will boost the signal over a large area and we saw great results in our testing. If you have a large house that has WiFi dead spots and struggle to get a good signal throughout the home I would definitely recommend this Nighthawk Range Extender.

Our Rating

NetGear-AmbassaodorAs more and more of our work and leisure time is spent online, the need for a strong home WiFi network is ever increasing. Most households have many different devices competing for an internet connection including computers, TVs, Smartphones, tablets, game consoles and connected home devices. The first step in providing a good internet connection to all these devices is a fast router, but sometimes that alone is not enough to provide a fast connection throughout the home and a WiFi Booster can be the answer.

My home WiFi suffers from a dual whammy- our incoming internet connection is slow as we live a long way from the DSL hub, and our house has a unusual layout making it hard for a signal the reach throughout the entire home. We have a master bedroom on the entry level with the living areas half a floor up and and other bedrooms and office half a floor down. As you can imagine this is a nightmare for getting a strong signal throughout the house. We have a great router – the Nighthawk X6 which makes the most of our poor incoming signal to give us good connectivity on the main floor of the house where the router is located, but in the master we get a signal so poor that we often can’t even access email. I recently tested the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Range Extender Model EX7000to see if it could solve this problem.

The Nighthawk AC1900 model EX7000 is a a dual band range extender operating on both 2.4 and 5GHz, supporting speeds up to 1900Mbps. It supports the 802.11ac networking standard for better speed and reliability than the older 802.11n, but is also backwards compatible. It can be used as a WiFi extender or in Access Point Mode (wired to the router via an ethernet cable), I tested it as an extender. It has 3 external antennas and 5 ethernet ports that can be used for devices such as TVs, printers, and game consoles if you wish to connect them via ethernet cable instead of WiFi. It also has a USB 3.0 port.

Set Up

Set up is very quick and easy, especially if your router has a WPS button (as the X6 does). First you attach the 3 antennas, then plug in the extender close to your router and switch on. With WPS button set up you just press the WPS button on the extender then on the router and it connects automatically. You then repeat this for the second channel if you have both 2.4 and 5 GHZ on your router. Finally move the extender to the location you want, and check the signal strength. Indicator lights on the extender show the connection strength, for best performance they should be green for both bands. The new network name is your old name plus _2EXT  (2.4GHZ) or _5EXT (5 GHZ). .

The X6 has a WPS button so set up was a breeze for me.  I also repeated the set up without using the WPS, just to see how well that worked.

Using a Dual Band Extender with a Tri-Band Router

The Nighthawk X6 is a Tri-band router but the extender is a dual band, so I wasn’t sure how well these 2 would work together. In reality they work well, the X6 has a 2.4GHz band plus 2x 5GHz bands. You can use the booster to boost the 2.4GHZ band plus one of the 5GHz, the other 5GHz remains un-boosted. The X6 distributes the connections to even out usage over the 3 bands, so if the boosted bands are getting more use in some parts of the house it will naturally even things out by using the un-boosted band more in the areas where it has a good connection.

Set Up Without WPS

Instead of using the WPS button you connect to the extender network NETGEAR_EXT on a a computer, tablet or smartphone. Then launch a web browser and it will take you to the login screen for Network Genie. You need to set up an account by entering an email address and password then click “Set Up New Extender”. This is very simple: you just choose the network you wish to extend, pick which bands you want, enter your existing network password and choose your new name and password for your extended network. Although not as fast as using the WPS button, set up was still very straightforward, and only took about 5 minutes.

Testing Signal Strength

I used the free NETGEAR WiFi Analytics Android App to test the signal speed in various locations with and without the signal booster, and to help choose the optimal location for the booster. This was very useful and I’d love to see it available for iOS too for those without an Android device.

Screenshot_2016-02-13-10-37-26 Screenshot_2016-02-13-10-39-43

These 2 screenshots show the signal strength in the master bedroom when connected directly to the router (on left) and the same band via the booster (on right). As you can see there is a huge improvement and this translates to real life too- we can now check email, surf the web and even watch online videos in this room where before we could barely connect.

Extra Features

Although you can quickly set up the WiFi extender in standard extender mode you can also use the NETGEAR Genie to customize to set up to suit your situation. Many of these features are also available on the X6 Router but if you have a router without these features this is a simple way to add them. Features include the ability to connect a USB printer or USB storage device to allow access to them across the network, the ability to schedule what times your internet connection is available (useful with teenagers to stop them using their phones late at night!) and fast lane technology to improve WiFi speeds for streaming.

You can choose to boost your WiFi over a small or large area by adjusting the booster power within the app. I found using it at 100% worked best for me as I wanted to boost my signal over a large area.

Overall impression

I was very impressed with both how easy it was to set up, and the improvement we saw in signal strength in our previous dead spots. Our home is a huge challenge for internet connectivity with a poor incoming signal, large square footage and complex layout. There is no location you can place a router in where the signal doesn’t have to go through multiple interior and exterior walls to get to parts of the house, but the EX7000 rose to the challenge. The Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Range Extender EX7000 has eliminated our dead spots and we now get a good signal throughout the house including the master bedroom where previously the connection was often unusable.

Price and Availability
The NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Range Extender model EX7000 is available from Amazon, Best Buy, New Egg, Fry’s and other retailers for approximately $150. Although this isn’t cheap, it is well worth it if you have dead spots in your home in areas where you need a reliable internet connection. If you have a large house that has WiFi dead spots and struggle to get a good signal throughout the home I would definitely recommend this Nighthawk Range Extender.

What we love…

Coaching using motion sensors and app, game to encourage kids to brush, feedback after brushing, ease of switching profiles and brush heads. Easy for multiple family members to use 1 handle/ base with personal heads, ability to access data from multiple devices. Makes kids want to brush and do so more effectively.

What we’d love to see…

A rack for holding multiple brush heads, different color brushes in basic pack (colors are available in add-on packs) , more games

A great tool for all the family to improve their dental hygiene. It encourages kids (and adults) to brush regularly, coaches them on how to brush more effectively and provides feedback on how they are doing. Highly recommended!

Our Rating

Like many parents I struggle to get my children to do a good job of taking care of their teeth. They are old enough that they will no longer let me brush their teeth, but young enough that they really don’t understand how important good dental hygiene is. I first saw the Kolibree Smart Toothbrush at the Consumer Electronics Show and was intrigued to find out if it would actually make our toothbrushing battles any less frequent. I recently  tested it out with my 8 year-old twins and was pleasantly surprised that not only does it make them want to brush their teeth it also has them wanting to do a better job and their teeth are noticeably cleaner as a result.

At first glance Kolibree looks like any other good quality electric toothbrush. It is a sonic toothbrush, its charging base plugs into an electric outlet and the toothbrush charges when sitting on the base. It comes with 2 removable brush heads and additional heads are available to purchase. However, unlike a regular electric toothbrush Kolibree uses 3D motion sensors to monitor how you are brushing and give you feedback.

To use the toothbrush you first need to download the free iOS or Android app. With the app you create an account for the family and profiles for each member who will be using it.

It took me about 5 minutes to set up the app with profiles for all the members of my family. Once it is set up it is very easy to switch profiles, you just tap on the picture of the user and it lets you choose which family member is using it. When you are brushing there are 2 brushing programs to choose from- Go Pirate and Coach. Before each session the app will remind you to connect to the toothbrush via Bluetooth if you are not already connected.

It is very easy to switch toothbrush heads, making it easy to use with multiple family members. The 2 brush heads that come with the Kolibree are identical, so we added colored tape to be able to identify whose brush was whose (we tried Sharpie but that rubbed off). I did notice that the replacement brush heads come with a variety of different colored bristles so this won’t be an issue in future, but it would be nice to see 2 different colors come with the brush.

My kids had used manual and battery operated rotating tooth brushes before, but not a sonic toothbrush. I was unsure how they would react to this, especially as my son (with ASD) has sensory issues, so I had them feel the vibrations on their hand before using it the first time, the vibrations didn’t bother them at all. The brush handle is as long as a standard adult electric toothbrush but it is very light- weighing only 2.5oz, so my children found it easy to use.

iPhone Screenshot 5This app shows your mouth divided into 6 sections and as a 2 minute timer runs it takes you through brushing each section of your mouth- brushing inner, outer and biting surfaces for each of the 6 areas. It shows you which direction your brush strokes should be in, and encourages you to spent equal time on each section. This app is great to use with kids the first time they use the Kolibree, and for adults and older kids in the long term. It not only makes you brush for a full 2 minutes but teaches you how to effectively clean all tooth surfaces during that time. As an adult I find this app really useful and interestingly my 8 year-old daughter likes to use this instead of the Go Pirate app.

Go Pirate

iPhone Screenshot 1This game is designed to encourage children to brush. They can pick a costume for their pirate and head off in search of gold. Each time they brush an icon at the bottom of the screen shows them which part of their mouth to brush, and a pirate also gives them verbal directions. If they follow the directions they will collect gold coins. Each time they brush they move to a new place on a treasure map, and there are treasure chests to find along the way. My son loves this app and collecting the gold coins. He is very competitive both at beating his sister and his own personal best score.

iPhone Screenshot 3

After you complete a brushing session you can go to the “Check Up” section of the app and see how you did. Each of your teeth is shown in outline and the paler the tooth the better job you did of brushing that area, yellow areas show where you need to do a better job. In between brushing sessions you can also see your accumulated brushing data in the Check Up, so you can tell which areas you need to work on more. My kids love being able to see how they did after each session- I think it is their favorite part of the whole Kolibree experience.

The app also has lots of customization options including changing the users handedness, adjusting brushing time, music and transition sounds. For me a very important feature is that you can easily switch between multiple family members within the app and you can have the family’s account on multiple devices. We usually use the app on my phone but in case I am not home at brushing time we also have it on my husbands phone and a family iPad. The data seamlessly synchs between devices so whatever device we use has their brushing history, and when I’m away from home I can look at my phone and see what time they brushed and how well.

iPhone Screenshot 2Over time each family member accumulates points, moves up levels and earns badges according to both how well and how frequently they brush. You can look back at their brushing history for the last week and see what points and awards they have earned over their brushing lifetime. They are also given a “Kolibree Index Score” based on how well and frequently they brush. These can all act as long term incentives to keep brushing and gives parents a way to monitor progress if they wish to give children rewards for hitting certain milestones.

Overall, although at first glance Kolibree looks much like any other quality electric toothbrush it has many features that make it stand out from the crowd. Its motion sensing technology and app give realtime coaching during brushing and feedback afterwards. The brush is designed to be used by both adults and children and is a great way to get all of the family working on improving their dental hygiene. In the time my family have been using it we have had noticeably less battles over teeth brushing, my kids are brushing more frequently, for longer and are consciously trying to do a better job when they brush. My 8 year old son said “mum this is a great way to get me to brush” and I think that sums it up pretty well! I will be ordering more brush heads so the rest of the family and use it too.

The Kolibree Smart Toothbrush is available from and Amazon the basic pack including Tooth brush, charging base, 2 heads and app is $149, other combo packs are available. Replacement brushes are $19 for a 3 pack.

Review of the Arlo Q Security Camera with Audio from NETGEAR

arlo-q-lifestyle-bookcase-1-mediumDisclaimer: I am a NETGEAR Ambassador and I received this product in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion and review.

What we love…

2 way audio, high definition video, night vision, a long cord, easy camera angle adjustment, zoom capability, sound and motion detection and free cloud storage.

What we’d love to see…

I would love to see integration with other connected home accessories and the ability to view from multiple devices simultaneously.

The Arlo Q is a great addition to the Arlo family, it is a very versatile indoor video camera.  It is very quick and easy to set up and needs no hub. It adds an Arlo option that has 2 way audio and needs no batteries. With no monthly fee for the basic storage plan this is a considerable saving over other systems that require a monthly fee.

Our Rating

I first reviewed the Arlo home security camera system from NETGEAR in March 2015, and I still use it on a daily basis. I love the versatility of the wireless cameras, the free online storage and the ingenious magnetic mounting system. For the cameras I use really frequently it would be nice to have a wired option to cut down on battery usage. NETGEAR has just launched the Arlo Q, which makes that option a reality. Arlo Q is a wired camera, so no more batteries, and includes 2 way audio. It can be used as an add-on to an existing Arlo system or it can be used independently. I have been testing out Arlo Q with my existing Arlo system and it is a great addition to the Arlo family!

Set Up

Set up is very easy. If you already have an Arlo system you can add Arlo Q as an additional camera via the app. If you don’t already own an Arlo system, Arlo Q can be used as a standalone, to start simply download the Arlo App and set up a free account. Arlo Q connects directly to your home WiFi network and does not need a hub.

Connect the included micro USB cable and wall charger to the Arlo Q, and plug in. The cable for Arlo Q is almost 10 feet long, much longer than the cables on other cameras I have tested. I really appreciated this as I’ve experienced how short cables can limit installation options. I could put Arlo Q on top of a high shelf and still reach an electric outlet.

Follow the instructions in the app to connect Arlo Q to your home WiFi network. The camera scans a QR code in the app to complete set up so you don’t even have to type in serial numbers, it took me about 3 minutes to have it up and running. I have the Arlo app installed on all our family’s smartphones and when I added the camera on one phone it automatically appeared in all the others linked to our account.

Unlike the wireless Arlo cameras Arlo Q is permanently attached to its base. The base can sit on a shelf or other flat surface or be mounted on a wall using the included bracket, the base is also magnetized so it will stick to a metal surface. One of the things I love about the wireless Arlo is how its magnetic ball and socket style mount allows easy adjustment of the viewing angle, Arlo-Q has a totally different mount but still includes a ball and socket joint making it easy to adjust the angle on this camera too.

From the Arlo app you can arm or disarm the camera and set up recording to be triggered by either motion or sound or both. You can also set a weekly schedule so that the camera is only armed during certain times and the schedule can vary on different days. You can also view the camera live stream at any time.  You can choose to record still images or video and you can opt for push notifications or email alerts when the camera is triggered.

You can adjust the sensitivity level for both sound and motion detection and can set up separate motion detection zones (by zooming in on different parts of the room.) For video recording you can choose to record clips from 10-120 seconds long.

There are a variety of storage plans available, the basic plan is free and allows free cloud storage of a week’s worth of video clips (maximum 1GB.) For my families needs the free basic plan is as much storage as we need, but there are also paid upgrade options available including the option to have continual video recording from your Arlo Q.  You can easily download or share video clips from your online library.

iPhone Screenshot 1
The Arlo Wireless cameras are weatherproof and designed to be used inside and out, but the Arlo Q is strictly indoor only. Arlo Q is ideal for situations where you want to be able to view a live video feed or make frequent recordings without worrying about batteries. I find it very useful for keeping an eye on my pet dog and cat when I am away from home. With the 130° camera angle I can watch pretty much the whole living room on live feed, and I can set up motion detection recording to keep an eye on their food and water bowls to make sure they are eating. It is also great for keeping an eye on my teenager to make sure he is getting his homework done when I am out of the room or even out of the house. I love that the 2- way audio means that I can gently remind my son to get back to work and that if he wants my attention he can just speak and I’ll get sent an alert. I do notice a slight lag in the video and audio feed- for me the live feed is about 10 seconds behind real life. For most situations this doesn’t matter but if you are having a 2 way conversation you need to remember to allow time for the other person to respond. I have noticed similar lags with other live feed cameras in my home.

For families with younger children it can make a great baby monitor – you can watch your child to see they are settling down to sleep and then set an alert to send you a notification if there is any sound or movement. I wish it had been available when my kids were younger. When my twins were babies I had a video monitor but the video quality was poor, I could only see one crib at a time, and unless I constantly watched the small fuzzy screen I couldn’t tell if they were awake but quiet, or sleeping. Arlo Q works so much better- good quality video streaming, wide enough angle to get both cribs in view and push notifications if the child moves or makes a sound. It would also work well for elder care with families being able to watch and speak to elderly relatives from afar.

Arlo App

In Camera you can view live feeds of video from all your Arlo cameras, and add new devices.

In Library you can look at your stored video clips and download or share any clips you wish to save.

In Mode you can also set up or change your schedule, create new “modes” and customize their rules and switch between modes. For each mode you can customize what triggers it – sound, motion or both; what action to take- record video, take snapshot or do nothing and how you wish to be notified if it is triggered- email, push notification, both or neither. You can also choose the length of video recording from 10-120 seconds. You can have different schedules for your Arlo Q and Arlo wireless cameras.

In Settings you can choose from 5 different video resolution options varying from 240p up to 1080p, switch the microphone on/ off, switch the speaker on/ off and adjust the speaker volume. You can also set up different zones within the camera field of view by zooming into certain areas. You can have up to 3 zones for each camera.

You can access the Arlo app on both Android and iOS devices as well as on your desktop. Currently you can only be logged in on one device at a time- so if you are viewing your cameras on your phone and your spouse also decides to view on their laptop or phone you will get kicked out. The newest log-in gets priority. In a future updates I would like to see the ability to view from multiple devices at once and integration with other connected home accessories.

Overall, I think the Arlo Q is a great addition to the Arlo family. I think it is a very versatile indoor video camera, it is very quick and easy to set up and needs no hub. It adds an Arlo option that has 2 way audio and needs no batteries. With no monthly fee for the basic storage plan this is a considerable saving over other systems that require a monthly fee. I love the 2-way audio, high definition video, night vision, long cord, easy camera angle adjustment, zoom capability, sound and motion detection and free cloud storage.
