eWallet – Password Manager by Ilium Software – Review

What we love…

easy to use multi-device password manager that allows synching with a touch.  No more forgotten passwords

What we’d love to see…

easier way to set up the app or program for the first time

Summary

Easy to use multi-device password manager means less password resets, easier ability to keep track of accounts and logins

Our Rating

eWallet - Password Manager eWallet – Password Manager by Iium Software is a multi-platform password manager which includes: iOS, Android, Mac, PC and Blackberry and allows you to remember passwords for websites, computer logins, work passwords and more.  This easy to use app or software allows you to keep your passwords safe either via Touch ID on your device or a password and sync them across platforms.  The app and software use 256-bit AES encryption to protect your information and ensure your passwords are safe.  This is a much better solution than writing passwords down on a scrap of paper, storing them in a document on your computer, storing them in the notes section of your device or having to constantly reset them.  You can easily back up across multiple devices including iCloud and Dropbox. If you do have multiple devices, you need to purchase the app or software for each such as iOS, PC/Mac.

Below are a few tips from Ilium Software on creating passwords.  You can read the full blog here.  Most Americans use pen and paper or memory as their primary method of keeping track of their online passwords according to a study by Pew Research.  In addition, many personal data breaches can be traced back to a simple password, use of an unfamiliar Wi-Fi network (free Wi-Fi) or using the same password on multiple sites.

Below are a few tips from Ilium software on passwords

  1. Create strong passwords or passphrases (at least 12 characters with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and punctuation — it should not be something easy to guess or unaltered from a dictionary.
  2. Use a different password for each account (easy with eWallet’s built-in password generator)
  3. Use a password manager — eWallet of course!
  4. Use multi-factor authentication with accounts that support it (and eWallet can store extra factor info too)

Between online logins, and other sources I have so many passwords I am trying to keep track of.  Before I started using eWallet, I would have complex passwords, but they may not have been complex enough — or I would have to reset them every time I wanted to access an online statement, use a site I may have used infrequently or worse have to call for a password reset.  In the six months I have been using eWallet, I’m happy to say my calls to the help desk for various services have declined, my passwords are more secure (you can even generate strong passwords in the app or program) and I’m saving time by not having to reset things so frequently.

iPad Screenshot 4

I loved that I no longer had to reset my passwords so frequently, I can simply pull out my iPhone/iPad or use my computer to access my logins without having to try to remember what my last password was.  Unlike many, I do not rely on written lists of passwords for financial data to ensure the safety of them.   Now, instead of fumbling for things like my insurance card when I go to the doctor, finding a password to make a purchase or logging into a favorite website I have the password at hand and can be ready to go in moments.  I even started using eWallet to keep track of wireless passwords, online account logins for medical records, and loved how easy it was to access everything.  I also liked that it was a one time fee versus subscription based.

In terms of improvement, I wish there were an easier way to input passwords.  There is an import function on the desktop version, but that’s only for the first time you use it – after that, if you haven’t entered it then you need to copy/paste.  I found using a computer was easier because I could copy/paste from various websites to ensure the URL was correct or that I was entering the data correctly.  One thing I did was create a .csv file of my frequently used websites and imported it to eWallet on my PC and then used a synch to get it on my iPhone.  It does take quite a bit of time to get the app set up when you first start using it – but once the initial setup is done it’s simple, easy to use and quick.  It works well both on the small screen of my iPhone as well as on my larger tablet.

Overall eWallet has made my password life a lot easier.  I’m no longer searching around for my passwords, I have them with a swipe of my finger on my device or a quick password on my desktop.  This has made my life easier and keeping up with my accounts faster!

PUZZINGO Kids Puzzles (Pro) by 77Sparx Studio, Inc. – Review

What we love…

Great variety of high interest puzzle themes introducing lots of basic and advanced vocabulary.

What we’d love to see…

A choice of lower or upper case for display of vocabulary words.

Summary

A unique puzzle and mini-game app that is engaging and meaningful with enormous amount of content for building a rich vocabulary.

Our Rating

PUZZINGO Kids Puzzles (Pro) is more than just a puzzle app. It is an extensive vocabulary app where the subjects are presented through different types of toddler and preschool puzzles. And these are not the average puzzles that you find in other puzzle apps. The puzzles in Puzzingo are both engaging and meaningful while the gameplay is ingenious. I’m totally impressed.

The vocabulary words are grouped according to themes or categories which helps children develop skills in sorting and classifying objects. Besides learning the name and sound of each object, they also learn what goes together. You can help your child to gain more knowledge and develop analytical skills by highlighting the similarities or relationship between the different objects.

Each themed pack of puzzles consists of 7 groups of puzzles focusing on 7 different topics within the theme e.g. the core concepts pack includes puzzles on shapes, colors, numbers, counting, emotions, alphabet and weather. Currently there is a total of 22 puzzle packs included in the app covering core concepts, food, professions, holidays, animals, space, life of toys, bugs, pets, dinosaurs, pirates, princesses & fairies, sports, music, fairy tales, super heroes, cars, trains, airplanes, trucks and candy kingdom. What is important to note is that there is a wide variety of high interest themes for younger children to choose from.

From an educator’s perspective, I like that the words introduced in each group help to build a rich vocabulary. Learners can see the print (in upper case) and hear the associated word read aloud when they touch each object puzzle, which in turn helps with labelling and word recognition. It is a great app for use in speech therapy. Besides learning the US English language, learners can also learn the vocabulary in Spanish, UK English, Chinese and Japanese.

While I’m impressed with the enormous amount of content that kids can potentially learn from the app, what I find refreshing is the format of the app’s gameplay – how it extends the play from one puzzle game to another meaningfully.

Each pack of puzzles consist of 2 types of puzzles, 1-piece puzzles and layered puzzles. Each 1-piece puzzles are easy to complete but each of these puzzle piece brings players to a more challenging layered puzzle. The layered puzzles show the many parts and layers that make up the object shown on the 1-piece puzzle piece. Players learn the names of these parts as they build the object puzzle piece-by-piece. In some cases, the parts could be items that are associated with the theme. For example, the soccer puzzle game introduces terms like goalie, goal, photographer, camera, signs, cone, players, injured player, medics, forward, midfielder, defender, soccer ball, jersey, cleats and shin guards.

Regardless the total number of puzzle pieces that kids have to put in place in order to complete a puzzle game, the app presents only 2 pieces at any one time so that kids won’t get overwhelmed. Another toddler-friendly support comes in the form of prompts that show kids where to place the puzzle piece when they placed the piece incorrectly repeatedly.

Once a puzzle game is completed, players are rewarded with an interactive mini-game that helps them to explore further on the theme. Kids can fly an airplane, conduct a band, dress up a character, score a goal, feed a dinosaur, drive a vehicle, play with the toys and many more activities. The games are varied and deliver so much fun with their cute animations and sound effects that they may just overshadow the puzzles in terms of popularity with kids. Repeat play is guaranteed.

If you have a preschooler at home, you definitely need to get Puzzingo. The free version Puzzingo Puzzles offers 7 sets of puzzles and mini-games and a free daily puzzle from one of the themed puzzle packs that is available for purchase. You can purchase individual puzzle packs or an All-Access Pass. This Pass allows your child to play with more than 150 puzzles and enjoy new content and games through regular updates. The latest update for the 2017 Holidays offers the Trucks Puzzles pack and Toys Puzzles pack which are perfect gifts for the holiday season!

With Puzzingo, completing a puzzle becomes meaningful and purposeful. Preschoolers are exposed to lots of vocabulary words from a wide range of topics while reaping the benefits of completing puzzles like spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, matching and fine-motor skills. With so much content in a single app, I’m positive that your preschoolers will have many favorite puzzles to keep them busy learning and playing.

World of Liberty is a fun adventure series of apps designed to help kids learn more about the world around them.  Below are snippets of our reviews for each of the three apps created by Amber Hood, founder of World of Liberty. During the month of December, 100% of  proceeds raised from the sale of World of Liberty apps will be donated to TinySuperHeros an  incredible organization.  TinySuperHeroes is an organization that makes capes for kids who have an illness or disability and since 2013, they have empowered over 12K kids across the world!

” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>World of Liberty app bundle (includes all 3 apps!)

World Of Liberty Adventure 1It’s Raining Pumpkins in Delaware by World of Liberty, LLC is an interactive universal storybook designed for iOS by Ogg Studios that takes different parts of the United States and explores how they connect to other parts of the country called “country connections” which helps to understand what America has in common with other countries with a focus on one specific state and one country at a time.  This particular story features Delaware and the sister city of Kalmar, Sweden which is the sister city to Wilmington, Delaware.  The storybook app designed for children aged seven to nine provides a history lesson in an interactive storybook app featuring animation, song, narration and features Liberty Lane (the primary character), her toy eagle Georgie, her toy plane Truman and her dog Ellie as they adventure around the world.  The app features a “read to me”, “read to myself” and “autoplay” option which brings history to life in this new series.   Liberty Lane helps to explain the tradition of Halloween in the United States and Georgie the Eagle helps to explain why pumpkins have faces for Halloween to scare away the creatures.  The app also includes information about the state such as the state flag and location of the state as well as information about Sweden which includes the language and flag as well as location and information specific to each of the sister cities and the ties between the two.  The author Amber Hood, is a professional voice over artist who is the voice for Dotty in Special Agent Oso and Susie Sunshine in Doc McStuffins.  Read our full review

WORLD OF LIBERTY “It’s Raining Pumpkins in Delaware” created by Amber Hood .

A fun and exciting interactive storybook adventure, about a little girl called Liberty Lane, her dog Ellie.

World of Liberty Adventure 2Liberty Lane is back, this time with an adventure spanning from Chicago to Ireland called Chicago’s Green River Leads to the Emerald Isle.  In this app for iOS, Android and Amazon, Liberty and her friends Ellie, Georgie and Truman explore the United States and discover the connections between Chicago and Dublin, Ireland via a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration.  This is the second in the series of Liberty Lane apps.  One of my favorite features of the app is the way that the graphics weave so nicely with the storyline along with a specific holiday.  We love celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in our family, so this story weaved nicely with the holiday..  I love that it connects historical facts in ways that children engage in learning without even realizing it.  My son also liked how Liberty’s laptop turned into a “magical portal” where she and her friends could travel to learn more about other countries and their connections to the United States.  We lived in Chicago for several years, so I loved that the story accurately portrayed the green river and how it led to the Emerald Isle.  I also liked the questions at the end of the story which help children take learning from just an onscreen experience to a true learning experience where they can show that the learned.  Since we had lived in Chicago, my son actually got to see the Chicago river dyed green so he thought it was pretty interesting that Liberty Lane saw that as well.  Read our full review.

World Of Liberty “Paintings, Planes and Pioneers”World Of Liberty “Paintings, Planes and Pioneers” is the third app in the series by World of Liberty.   Each of these interactive storybooks takes you on an adventure which involves the United States and a country connection to another country.  Other apps in the series include It’s Raining Pumpkins in Delaware and Chicago’s Green River Leads to the Emerald Isle!.  These  universal apps for iOS encourage kids to learn about history in a fun way that doesn’t make them realize they are learning.  This adventure features the state of Kansas and a school field trip to the Air and Space Museum where Liberty learns about Amelia Earhart and her red Vega plane.  The characters in the story are: Liberty Lane (the primary character), her toy eagle Georgie, her toy plane Truman and her dog Ellie as they adventure around the world. Her classmates, Tobi and Mei Li are also featured at the beginning of the story during the field trip and help her make the first connection about Amelia and her flight.  Liberty learns that Amelia was an explorer who saw her first airplane at the age of 11 at the Iowa State fair.    They go to the state of Kansas to learn more about where Amelia grew up and learn about the capital and that one of the biggest crops for the state is wheat.  Amelia’s childhood home was converted into a museum about her life and her travels.  They make a connection to Mexico which is the next destination in the story and include a toy Vega plan named Bessie from the museum on the trip. While in Mexico they visit Frida Kahlo’s “La Casa Azul” where they learn that Frieda was an art pioneer who loved to paint.  These two ladies were both pioneers in different fields and had a connection to one another.  Read our full review.

Arlo Pro 2 Security System by NETGEAR -Review

Summary

The Arlo Pro 2 system is a very flexible WiFi HD security camera system. With it’s magnetic mounting system and rechargeable batteries it can be used almost anywhere. The system integrates with Amazon Alexa, Smart Things, Stringify and IFTTT to be an integral part of the Smart Home. Although the Arlo Pro 2 is not the cheapest security system on the market, I feel its high quality recording and advanced features make it well worth the cost.

The Arlo Pro 2 security system from NETGEAR is the latest high definition wireless camera system in the Arlo range. We reviewed the original Arlo in March 2015, it was a great system then and has had lots of upgrades and improvements since.

What’s in the Box

The Arlo Pro2 is available as a system with 2 Arlo Pro 2 cameras, a system with 4 Arlo Pro 2 cameras or as a single camera to add to an existing Arlo system. We tested the starter set with 2 cameras.

The system comes with 2 Arlo Pro 2 cameras, each with rechargeable batteries, a base hub, power supply for the base, 1 camera charger with charging cable, 2 magnetic mounts with hardware to attach to wall, ethernet cable and quick start guide.

Set Up

It is very quick and easy to set up the Arlo Pro 2 system:

  • Insert rechargeable battery in each camera (they come fully charged)
  • Connect Base station to WiFi router using included ethernet cable
  • Plug in base station power supply and switch on
  • Wait until lights on front turn green (about 2 minutes)
  • Download Arlo app
  • If you don’t already have an Arlo account you need to set one up from the Arlo App on your smartphone, if you do just add the base station and cameras to your account
  • Sync cameras with base station by pressing sync button on base station, bringing camera  within 1-3ft of base station, then pressing camera sync button
  • Place your cameras where you want them, and you are ready to go!

Mounting Cameras

Like the original Arlo cameras, the Arlo Pro 2 cameras can be mounted using magnetic ” ball and socket” type mounts or placed on a flat surface such as a shelf. Two magnetic mounts are included in the set, these can be attached to a wall using included screws. I love this mounting system as it is really easy to adjust the camera angle and literally takes seconds to take down a camera or move it to another mount. If you are concerned about your outdoor cameras being stolen there is also the option of a screw threaded mount which can be purchased from Amazon or Best Buy for $19.99.

Features

  • HD 1080dp video recording
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Wireless
  • Long Lasting Rechargeable batteries
  • Indoor/ outdoor use
  • IP-65 certified Weather resistant
  • 100 dB security siren built-in

  • Automatic night vision mode
  • Can add more Arlo, Arlo Q, Arlo Pro or Arlo Pro 2 cameras to system
  • Optional recording plans if want continual 24/7 recording
  • Works with Amazon Alexa, Stringify and IFTTT
  • Option to add local back up storage by connecting a USB to the base station.
  • Can schedule different sensing and recording modes

Picture Quality

Arlo Pro 2 cameras can record in 1080p HD so the image quality is very good. The cameras have a wide viewing angle – 130° and night vision is automatically triggered in low light conditions.  Within the Arlo app there are 3 options for video quality- best video, optimized or best battery life- so you can change the setting if battery lift is more important to you than the image quality. Day time images are recorded in color and night vision recording are black and white. When watching the camera feed live, or the video recording you can zoom in on an area to see it in more detail.

Recording Triggers

The default mode is that recording is triggered by motion or sound with cameras armed. You can add your own custom modes. you can switch modes manually using the app or set them up on a schedule so that they can automatically change between modes at your designated times, which can be different on different days of the week. There is also an option to using geofencing to automatically change modes based on whether or not you are home, but to use this you do need to have location services on continually on your phone, which can drain your phone battery more quickly.

Setting up Modes and Schedules for Arlo

I initially tried setting up modes via my laptop which I found a little confusing, luckily there is an active online NETGEAR Arlo Commmunity and a quick search there was able to answer my questions. I have found this community to be a great resource to answer any questions I have about set up and use of Arlo systems.

Ultimately I found it much simpler to set up modes and schedules via the Arlo mobile app. On the bottom of the screen is a “mode” button pressing it gives a list of all your current modes and the option to add new modes. When you add a new mode you can set it up to respond to motion, sound detection, or both, from one of your cameras. You then set the sensitivity and decide what to do – record on that camera, record on another camera or do nothing. You also choose to receive notifications via push notification, email alerts, both, or nothing. Once you’ve set up the rules for one camera you can add the rules for any other camera within the same mode.

Once you have set up modes to create a schedule:

  • Tap mode
  • Tap “schedule”
  • Tap the pencil icon to edit
  • Tap anywhere on a day and you are given an option to choose a time of day and a mode, you can also chose to have that schedule on just one day, every day or your choice of days

Your cameras will then switch between modes automatically based on your schedule. You can over ride this at any time by tapping “mode” and picking armed, disarmed or any of your custom modes.

Once i got over my initial confusion from trying to set it up on the laptop I found setting up modes and schedules via the Arlo app to be quick and easy.

In Use

The Arlo Pro 2 cameras are very easy to set up and you can start using them straight away without any customization. It does take a little longer to set up your custom recording modes but it is worth it so that you only record what you want to see, and avoid getting swamped with recording notifications.

The Arlo Pro 2 cameras can be used totally wire free, which means that you can put them in places where wired cameras could never be mounted without having to do extensive wiring or using extension cords. The weatherproofing is great too- living by the ocean I appreciate having an outdoor camera that can withstand the elements.

I love having the rechargeable batteries it is so much more economical and greener than using disposable batteries, especially if you are doing a lot of recording or forget to switch off recording when you are home! The “official” battery life is about 4-6 months, but this is based on only recording a short period each day. I tested it out by letting it record every time there was any motion near my front door, which with a family of 5 plus dog coming and going is a lot of recording! Even with this heavy recording schedule the battery has lasted over a month and still has approximately 50% battery life left.

If you have an indoor camera that is near an outlet, it is nice to also have the option to plug it in which and this lets you add activity zones to further customize your recording.

As well as the rechargeable batteries another new feature compared to the original Arlo is the addition of 2 way audio. This is really useful when using the Arlo Pro 2 to monitor a sleeping child. I have older children and like to use it to check my children are working on their homework and remind them to start if they are not!  The 2 -way audio is also useful to communicate with a caller at the front door, even when I’m not home. I think having the alarm is a great additional security feature if an intruder is ever spotted, and the high quality images are useful for identification in those circumstances too.

There are lots of optional extras accessories available for the Arlo Pro 2 system including: extra rechargeable batteries, a dual battery charging station, camera skins, and a solar charger.
