Our Rating

A mastery of Math Facts enable our kids to solve complex Math problems easily and quickly. More importantly, a fast recall of Math Facts give them the tools for handling daily life skills like telling time and counting money. If you are looking for an app for learning and memorizing Math Facts, you need to check out Math Facts To 100 by FuzzyBees.

This app teaches addition, subtraction, multiplication and division Math Facts. It is fully customizable to match what your child is working on and it is equipped with supportive learning tools that teaches your child how to solve math problems independently. These help facilitate understanding and reduce frustrations when completing math drills that are necessary in achieving Math Facts fluency.

Read on for the app’s various powerful features.

Fully Customizable Settings

The strength of this app is the flexible settings which allow you to design your own Math Facts drills. You can break down the steps to mastering Math Facts into manageable levels based on your child’s learning needs/goals and set up the app accordingly. Not only can you choose which Math Facts to learn and set how many equations to solve at each session, you can also tailor the types of equations to be solved and the kind of support to offer to your child.

Additional customizable details that further adapt the app to what your chid is familiar with are grouped under the Display section of the Settings page. These include skip counting by the multiplier or multiplicand, vertical or horizontal equation format, and the phone or calculator number pad layout. You also have the option to mute the sounds for various actions e.g. incorrect answers given.

There is no timer here but the time taken for completion of each session is recorded. A maximum of 4 different settings for different learning goals or different child can be prepared and saved at any one time.

Visual Learning Tools

The app is equipped with 3 types of interactive student tools that you can use to demonstrate to your child how to solve a math problem. Different child learns differently and presenting them with different approaches to solving the same problem allows you to discover the one that helps your child understand the concept best. This also encourages your child to seek out a different method of solving a problem when one strategy does not work.

The 3 learning tools provided in the app are the Hundred Board, Multiplication Board and a White Board. Students are free to choose the visual tool or combination of tools that they want to work with for each question. A color tool (consisting of 9 colors) is available for highlighting key numbers during the problem solving process.

The 100 Board is equipped with visual help (which you can opt out in the Settings) that highlight the steps to solving Math problems more effectively. For example, instead of counting up or down for addition and subtraction equations, students learn to get the same answer more quickly by adding or subtracting in tens (vertically) and in ones (horizontally).

If they tap and hold on any number on the board, they can also see what it means to add and subtract a quantity from this number.

For multiplication, the 100 Board will show students how to use skip counting to arrive at the answers. The visual help show the sequence of multiples (times tables) which students have to memorize.

The Multiplication Board (x2 to x10), on the other hand, helps students to multiply and divide easily within 100. Just tap the factors along the left most column and the top most row and the intersected number will give the answer.

The third tool, the White Board acts as a free space for students to do their math working. This is my youngest’s favorite as he is more comfortable with using counters which he draws on the board using the color tool. For him, the act of sharing a large number of counters equally helps him to better understand the concept of division.

Creating Math Drills

Before starting to use the app, you will need to find the Settings section that is hidden from the Students’ section. Pull down the equation box to reveal the Settings, color tool and redo buttons. The Teaching Tips and Reports sections are also accessible from the Settings section. You can learn about the various app features and how to use them in the Teaching Tips.

In the default setting, the app generates 50 random basic Math Fact equations of mixed operations in one session. Besides solving for answers to the equations, problems asking for the 1st or 2nd operand are also included (e.g. ? x 12 = 36). This is a great Math Facts workout for advanced students to improve their mental math. To modify the types of problems in this ‘Generate’ mode, you can adjust the parameters like the maximum values of the operands and results as well as the math operators tested.

To prepare drills focused on specific group(s) of Math Facts in the ‘List’ mode, you load the in-app basic facts and choose/add the one(s) to work on. Single or mixed operators, sequential or random equations, one or many problems, the choice is yours. If your child has math facts homework from school, you can even input these equations into the app. This way, your child can make use of the app’s visual tools to help him/her complete the homework.

Reports

At a glance, the reports show you the date and time, percentage of correct answers, number of equations attempted, time taken and whether visual help was used for each completed session. Tap on each session and you will see the list of equations that were answered incorrectly on the first try, so that you can have your child work on them again.

Summary

Math Facts to 100 is a dynamic app for learning the basic Math Facts visually and progressively. It is designed to meet the needs of children of different abilities and students at different stages of Math Facts fluency through instructional scaffolding. Highly recommended.

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System – Review

Blink Home Monitorblink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a battery powered home monitoring system designed for homeowners and renters which can be easily placed throughout your residence.  The companion app, Blink for Home allows you to set motion alerts, watch live HD video, customize cameras and alert settings.  Set up is super easy – you simply plug in the Blink hub and then using your device download Blink for Home.  After opening the cameras and installing the AA lithium batteries, it’s easy to add them to your system.  After installing you can scan the QR code on the back of each camera to add it to your system.  After adding each camera, you take a photo of the location you plan to put it in so that you can easily tell which camera you want to check.  For purposes of the review I received the Blink Hub and two Blink indoor cameras.  I positioned the Hub near my router and one of the cameras near my front door.  I also placed the second camera downstairs.  There are no monthly fees, wires and it’s movable so if you find a particular location isn’t working well for you – it’s easy to move the camera.  Blink also offers a Blink XT Waterproof camera that can be used outside in the weather.

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a battery powered home monitoring system that takes moments to set up that is perfect for those that rent, own or are simply visiting,  Through the app, you receive motion alerts, can watch live HD video, customize cameras and alerts to meet your needs.  I even brought Blink recently when I went away for a day, I grabbed my router, plugged it into the internet where we were and my cameras were online.

What we love…

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is easy to use wireless home monitoring system that helps you monitor your property including mailboxes.  It’s so easy to set up that my son did it!

What we’d love to see…

ability to toggle on/off the flash

Summary

Overall blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a great way for me to keep track of any movement in my home and watch my house from inside when I am expecting a package.  I love that it has no wires and is so easy to set up!

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

I loved how easy blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System was to set up – I even had my 9 year old help me,  Simply scan the QR code using your iPhone or device and you take a quick snap after installing the battery.  The system was up and running in moments.  Blink has great battery life and I loved that you could move around the cameras as needed within the house easily.  Package theft is real, and I also loved that I could aim it outside to watch for when packages were delivered as well as monitor if anyone was here that wasn’t supposed to be.

One thing that I didn’t like about blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System was the “flash” when we used the camera.  I found that this would wake up my little one when I had it in his bedroom since it was bright.  It would be nice if there were a way to turn it off.

Overall blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a great, easy to set up home monitoring system that could be portable when I needed it to be. No wires, no fuss. I had the system up and running in about five minutes. The photo quality and videos were great and it was so easy to use! It’s great to use when away from home and the internet is running too! No phone line required.

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System (as tested) RRP is $169.99. You can get a blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System with one camera for $99.99 USD. Blink XT Add On Camera is $119.99 USD.

Abigail’s Tales: First Day by Dabster Entertainment – Review

What we love…

beautifully illustrated book that tells us about Abigail’s day and her nervousness about it as well as all the ways she no longer needs to feel nervous.  Sharing ways not to be nervous was my son’s favorite part.

What we’d love to see…

way to customize the games so they didn’t get so hard quickly and ability to turn off the time

Summary

This is a beautifully illustrated book and game app which will help kids get over their jitters before the first day of school.  I can’t wait to try it with my older son before he goes back to school in the fall.

Our Rating

[APP ICON] Abigail’s Tales: First Day is the story of Abigail and her first day of second grade.  When she wakes up, she realizes it’s the first day of school and she begins to get nervous about it.  Abigail begins to get nervous about her funny feeling in her stomach, her mom reassures her about her first day of school and calls them butterflies.  Abigail gets ready for school and meets her classmates in Ms. Brady’s class.    This app features word highlighting, narration and beautiful illustrations.  It is both a storybook and a game.  The app features a typical second grade day including lunch, a field trip and time with friends.  The app includes a matching game and an opposite game.  The matching game has pictures and items to match.  The opposites game requires you to match up words.

I liked the reminders on how to help Abigail prepare for her first day, deep breaths, good thoughts, a uniform that is similar to other kids. A hug from Mom helps make the butterflies go away as she heads to class.  I also liked the story, it reminded me of somethings I might have done or my older son might have done like running around on the playground.  It’s great to see Abigail with her friends in the story and she’s no longer nervous about going to school.  First day jitters are always so hard for my kids – and I’m hoping when August rolls around that we will be able to read the story and remember that the first day is just another day.  I liked hearing that Abigail liked cats – I prompted my son to what he would say and he said art and lunch!  The ending also made me laugh when Abigail puts a special surprise in Jake’s pocket!  I also liked that kids could choose to have narration on/off/restart as well as the text highlighting on or off depending on their reading level.

In terms of enhancements, the games did get hard quickly.  The timer made my son a bit nervous the first few times he played.  I did like that the app adapted and made it harder or easier for him.

There are no in-app purchases, external links or advertising contained within the app.  This app is best for early grade school or perhaps older if kids are nervous before the first day.

My Pets: Cat & Dog For Kids by Knbmedia – Review

400x400bbMy Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids by Knbmedia is a kids app that encourages the use of observation to find a variety of animals in the house, park, garden, and garage.  The app first prompts you to find the animal, and then you scroll with your finger to locate it.  The app tells you what to look for such as a goldfish, then shows a picture of the item.  Once you tap on the item it pops up a card which shows a larger version of the item in a card format and allows you to hear the items name in a variety of ways: English, French, Spanish, to record your own voice. When you find the animal an image pops up on the card and the head or in some cases the body moves.  In the version of the app I tested, I tested both My Pets and My Pets 2.

What we love…

fun animal themed game that encourages kids to use perception and finding skills to find the animal within the app

What we’d love to see…

animals that are a bit more of a match in the app to the item pictured

Summary

My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids is a fantastic early learning game which encourages kids to find an animal using visual perception, then hear the name and follow up games are included like an animal album, jigsaw puzzle and additional modes.

Our Rating

My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids keeps track of animals that you find, and after you find all of them, they are placed in a booklet which is called a card.  After finding all of them, you can print a booklet to show all of the animals which can be sent via email, direct printing via Wi-Fi and file sharing.  For the email option, it does pop up an email, but you can’t go beyond that.  For the direct printing a printer icon shows up.  The app allows for multiple modes perfect for younger and older kids, as well as letting you pick your specified language for spoken instructions and animal names.  That is protected by a parental gate.

My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids includes 48 animals total.  Gameplay is multi-lingual and you can find the animals on your device, take their photo, create a jigsaw puzzle, take a quiz or watch a video.  Animals range from cats and dogs to birds, hamsters and rabbits.  In the My Pets 2 world, animals include a hedgehog, turtle, koi carp, horse, spider.  After finding all the animals, you can take a photo of the animals in the house (using an integrated camera – nothing is saved in the camera roll) and once you take 12 photos a surprise awaits.  There is also a game that tells you it’s almost nighttime and you have to find the animals using a night light – at first they are in a specific area then you have to scroll in the dark to find the animal.

As a parent, I liked that My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids encouraged kids to find an item and then let them listen to what it was called.  My younger son didn’t turn the wheel to hear the animal name pronounced in many ways, but my older son did.  I also liked that kids were guided a bit if they went the wrong way and didn’t get frustrated at trying to find an item.  I also liked that My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids was an app kids could play multiple times without repetition and there were new activities they could earn like the printable album, the ability to take photos of the animals or a jigsaw puzzle.  A visual reminder at the top showed a camera filling in as progress toward the next milestone activity.  For example, when you take a photo it gives you a fact about the animal and then saves it to the game. The jigsaw puzzle has you “shake” your device after taking a photo which means that you can get a puzzle that’s either 4/6/12/20 pieces and the longer you shake it the more pieces.   I also liked the multi-user setting as well as the ability to set the difficulty which ranged from easy, to difficult with varying levels of cues that were provided.

In terms of enhancements for My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids, sometimes the animals didn’t always look like the item that was on the screen telling you to look for it.  One example is the Maine Coon Cat which was pictured as an animated white cat, when you tapped on the cat a more accurate striped cat was shown. My younger son didn’t always like the head movement of the animals when they were found – I’m not sure why because he couldn’t tell me why he didn’t like it at first but once he used the app a bit he got more used to it.

My Pets: Cat & Dog for Kids is a fantastic early learning game which encourages kids to find an animal using visual perception, then hear the name and follow up games are included like an animal album, jigsaw puzzle and additional modes.   The app is free with IAP for My Pets World 2.  There are additional worlds listed as well with the note” “coming soon”.  The app includes appropriate parental gates and no advertising.
