Charlie Jumped out of the Clock – Learning Story by Crayon Box – Review

image

Another time learning app, you say? Well, we can never have enough apps that teach kids to tell time as apps can be as varied as children are unique with different interests and needs. There is always room for more especially if your child is still not getting it or needs lots more practice and you need fresh new ideas to keep the learning going.

What we love…

Learning about time through a cute story.

What we’d love to see…

Display the time in words and allow the hour and minute hands to move only in a clockwise direction.

Summary

A unique time learning app that not only teaches the concept of time but also shows kids the purpose of knowing how to read the clock.

Our Rating

Charlie Jumped out of the Clock is a unique time learning app that presents its lessons and exercises in a storybook format that will sure to capture your child’s attention. Charlie is a cogwheel that lives inside grandpa’s clock and along with his other cogwheel friends, they turn their bodies to make time go. But one day, he jumped out of the clock and it caused the clock to stop moving. Your child has to help set the various time so that grandpa can tell what time it is and go about his daily routines.

There are 2 modes of play – children can either follow the story and learn at the same time or opt for the practice mode. In the story, children are taught the parts of the clock, the difference between the hour and minute hands, how to set the hour and then the minute, the corresponding time on a digital clock, the other ways of reading time like half past/quarter to as well as the difference between am and pm in a 24-hour day. Interactive exercises are added to reinforce the learning points throughout the story. Each section of the lessons and exercises can be repeated in sequence but you can also jump straight to specific lessons and exercises from the menu, if you wish.

The practice mode, on the other hand, brings children to a clock that displays the current time and as they move the clock hands, the corresponding time is displayed in the digital clock. It would be more realistic if the hour and minute hands are only allowed to move in a clockwise direction here.

What I like about this app is that children are shown how the clock hands move as the time passes. Children need to see how the hour hand moves in relation to the minute hand. The app also gives children an idea how long is an hour by using grandpa’s favorite tv show as an example. These details are often overlooked in other similar apps. Another helpful detail is the display of minutes in blocks of 5 on the clock face and these numbers are in the same color as the minute hand to help children make the association easily. Likewise for the hour hand.

Charlie jumped out the clock is a cute story about how grandpa depends on his clock everyday to help him follow his daily schedule. It cleverly incorporates mini time-telling lessons and exercises for readers to complete in order to move the story forward. After you have read this story with your children, why not help them draw up their own schedules and get them to practice reading the clock on a daily basis, just to be on time like grandpa?

Tinybeans | baby & kids private photo journal for sharing with family by Tinybeans Ltd – Review

iPhone Screenshot 5

What we love…

it’s so easy to upload photos from my smartphone and share them with friends and family securely

What we’d love to see…

iPad native app, ability to  create a collage

Summary

My go to photo app – I love the free version and the premium takes some of my wishes to the next level!

Our Rating

Tinybeans | baby & kids private photo journal for sharing with familyAs a mom, I’m aware that I want my children to make their own digital footprint and not have me make it for them.  Tinybeans, an Australia based startup has created an app for iOS, Android and the desktop/laptop computer that allows you to create your own private photo journal that you can share with friends and family for FREE!  This app allows you to post daily photos, use a variety of photo editing tools including filters, enhancing photos, adding text and more all with the touch of swipe on your smartphone.  Tinybeans was created after one of the founders had a child with a speech delay.  It was first used as a speech therapy tool to include photos of various items that the child was learning how to speak, and once friends and family learned of how it worked and that it was secure the word of the app took off and has grown since.

I first started using the app, after the hospital photographer sent me a link to it.  I had been looking for  a secure way to send photos back and forth with family since we were living quite a distance from them but hadn’t found a solution that I was comfortable with.  The Tinybeans app allowed me to have people install it on their smartphone, tablet or use it on their computer and pushes an update to them daily – or weekly with the moments I have uploaded so they can see from day to day what my kids are doing.  I love the ability to put short videos (30 seconds for free version and up to 5 minutes for the premium version) as well as photos of our daily lives.  I can upload photos either from my tablet/smartphone or directly from my camera when plugged into my desktop computer and they are ready and posted to the specific day I choose.  I also love putting in my children’s milestones because although I remember them at the moment in time, I can easily flip back to see exactly when they happened which makes doctors appointments so much easier as well as updating a baby book!

The app also allows you to create photobooks, manage multiple children (which you can tag for the individual photos) as well as creating slide shows and exporting your favorites.

The premium version of the app ($80 USD/annually) unlocks many of the features I was seeking when using the app – they include longer video’s, the ability to upload multiple photos at once, ability to export all of your photos via a simple click rather than downloading them one at a time, create online photo shows for those that do not have Tinybeans.

In terms of enhancements, I’d love to see a collage option where I can take three to four photos and make them into one – for example on my son’s first birthday I would have loved to do this and pin that as my “moment of the day” photo.  I’d also like to see “background” options when doing the slideshow so you can customize the background of the photo show.  I’d also love the ability to save specific moments privately rather than sharing with everyone.

Overall, this is my go to photo app and has been since the day I installed it on my phone.  I can’t believe all the features that are included in the free version and the premium version takes it to the next level.  I love the ability to edit my photos on the fly and upload them which means that they are shared with others and not stuck on my device.  I can’t wait to see what Tinybeans comes up with next!

A Parcel of Courage – interactive picture book with an extra original set of 4 learning games by MoonaGroup – Review

iPad Screenshot 3

What we love…

beautiful illustrations; mini games and narration have children engaged while reading the story and beyond; easy navigation

What we’d love to see…

ability to turn off the camera potion on the last page; recipe for the chocolate courage cookies

Summary

Perfect story to help children understand that even though their relatives may live far away, a bit of courage may help them come and visit in time.

Our Rating

A Parcel of Courage - interactive picture book with an extra original set of 4 learning gamesA Parcel of Courage by MoonaGroup is a universal storybook designed for iOS and Android.  This storybook is about three little boys Alex, Max and Leo and their want to have their grandparents visit them.  Their grandmother and grandfather are unfortunately afraid to fly and so the children devise a number of ways to try and encourage them to come visit including: making chocolate courage cookies, encouraging them to take a very long walk or taking an airplane ride to come and visit.  The story is available with narration in British English as well as Russian.   It contains four mini games which include: Restaurant which encourages imaginary play where children order food while pretending to be grandma; post office where children address and stamp a postcard to send via the mail; suitcase where children must use fine motor and reasoning skills to pack the suitcase full of goodies when Grandma and Grandpa visit; Mandala where a variety of different colors are presented and children try to match a preciously created photo using memory skills.  The games use an instructive method which moves you on within the app as you complete the various activities.  Moona is a Russian based app developer who uses the Motessori teaching method to encourage learning via exploration and engaging them while reading to learn more.

As a parent of young children who lived far away from family, we often had trouble helping my son understand the concept that his grandparents lived at a minimum 18 hours away by car or an airplane ride away and a trip took much preparation, this book would have been a lifesaver for me a few years ago.  After Granny gets the chocolate courage cookies, she is brave enough to go on a flight of 48 centimeters and visit her grandchildren and make their favorite pancakes.

iPhone Screenshot 2

My kindergartener and I loved this story and interactive activities included especially making cookies and writing the letter to send them.  I thought that the time-frame was somewhat realistic to send the cookies to their grandparents – and although the wait can seem like forever when a child is waiting for an answer from a loved one.  The clearing of the snow was also especially realistic this winter given the weather we have been having in Boston complete with pancakes for a job well done.   We also loved the illustrations and story line which are perfect for when your child is missing someone be it a parent, grandparent or other family member.

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see an option to disable the camera roll saving of the photo.  My little tester took many many photos of the family and didn’t understand why he couldn’t see them immediately like he can when I use the iPad to take a photo normally.  After I showed him the camera roll, he understood that they had been saving the entire time,  I’d also like to see a “recipe” for the chocolate courage cookies at the end of the story as that was something my son asked if we could make since we enjoy cooking together.

Overall, this is a fun app that helps children understand that although your relatives may live far away, they might still come visit given the right amount of courage cookies and willingness to make the trip.  There are no in-app purchases or advertisements and a parent gated area.   It is best designed for toddlers through early elementary aged children.
