Yummiloo Rainbow Power By Night & Day Studios and Yummico – Review

What we love…

introduction to growing cycle, understanding of new fruits and vegetables as well as teaching children about making healthy choices for foods

What we’d love to see…

easier mode for the “drag play mode” with more recognizable fruits and vegetables, better lock on the parent section

Summary

Hands down, if you have a child who is a picky eater or does not enjoy trying new fruits and vegetables, you have to download this app.  It encourages play with food (in a good way) while encouraging them to eat a rainbow of healthy foods every day.

Our Rating

Yummiloo Rainbow Power by Night & Day Studios and Yummico is an app that helps children learn how to identify different fruits and vegetables from the garden either by type or color with the Yum Yums.  Yummico is a newly founded company which is co-founded by Traci Paige Johnson, the voice of Blues Clues. The app features Rooty Yum, Beany Yum, Plum Yum, Yogi Yum and Bun Yum  as they teach you  about different types of fruits and vegetables including how to grow them, identification from the garden, as well as more non-traditional types of items.  In the app, The Yum Yums teach about healthy eating and the need to eat a rainbow of colors.  The Yum Yums are headed to their annual carnival only to find that the Rainbow machine which powers the rides is empty.  Children must harvest different types and colors of foods to get the carnival working again.  The app has two modes, the “tap play mode” allows the user to tap on fruits or vegetables to send them to the harvest container or compost pile and is designed for younger children such as young preschoolers.  The “drag play mode” requires a player to drag the fruits and vegetables to the harvest bin or compost and adds a time element as well as an additional level of play to the app.  Each fruit or vegetable is identified as it is put into the harvest bin, teaching children the name as well as a illustrative example of what the food is.  This app is great for practicing food names, color recognition, expressive language, building knowledge of a growing cycle as well as understanding that you need to eat healthy.

One of my favorite features of the app was that it encouraged my son to explore different fruits and vegetables including some that we had never heard of before.  Once my son learned about them in the app he was more willing to try them to see if he liked them which was a huge win for our family.  I loved the versatility of the app too which ranged from find the “purple grapes” to “find objects that are green.”  My son enjoyed learning about how we needed to eat a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables as well as the cycle of how plants grow.  The app shows planting of seeds, growing, harvesting into the harvest bin, decomposition (needing to put it in the compost pile) as well as replanting.  I also liked that if you attempted to put the wrong color or type of food in the bin, you were reminded of what you were looking for in the app such as “yellow and green” foods.  The snack attack provided a nice break from growing foods while at the same time encouraging the character to only eat healthy foods.

In terms of improvements, I think it would be nice for the “drag play mode” to feature simpler vegetables for younger children.  In addition – it would be nice if the fruits and vegetables grew on more realistic ground – like the grapes growing on a grapevine versus just appearing in the sandy soil.  It does happen for some fruits like strawberries and tree types of fruit such as apples and oranges do grow on trees.  I would also like to see the parents section require more than just a tap to switch play modes as well as snack attack as my kindergartener found the setting and enjoyed switching it back and forth which made the game a little bit too difficult for him.

Hands down, if you have a child who is a picky eater or does not enjoy trying new fruits and vegetables, you have to download this app.  It encourages play with food (in a good way) while encouraging them to eat a rainbow of healthy foods every day.  Fun, creative and will capture your child’s attention for hours.  I loved that it promoted healthy foods which are a great choice for my family.  There are no unprotected external links in the app.

Grandma Loves Bugs by Fairlady Media – Review & Giveaway

What we love…

ability to tailor learning to your child’s level by picking the mini games that are best suited to their ability; educational learning content that is fun and has kids playing without even realizing they are learning

What we’d love to see…

“hint” option  as well as the ability to “count” items like fireflies using your finger rather than choosing the wrong choice.

Summary

Fantastic educational app that lets you target a variety of skills for preschool through early elementary school aged children

Our Rating

Grandma Loves Bugs by Fairlady Media for iOS is the newest addition to their educational app collection.  The app includes ten mini games including: spot the difference, magic coloring, letter match, bug spelling, counting fireflies, number groups, bug identification, feed the baby bird, bug matching and building a spider web.  The app incorporates skills for children aged preschool through early elementary school who are learning while they are having fun!  Be sure to check out our reviews of Grandma’s Kitchen and Grandpa’s Workshop, two of the other apps in their collection.  This would be a great app for practicing fine motor, speech skills including spoken and understood directions, counting.  I can also see it being used by speech therapists.

One of my favorite features of the app – other than the fact that my son is learning without even realizing is that I can go into the parental settings and choose which games I want him to play to target specific skill sets.  The app has very good photos of bugs that are realistic while providing educational content for children.  It was nice that Grandma gave an overview of what we were looking at while we used the magnifying glass.  My son’s favorite game was bug spelling – and I liked that it required you to put the letters on in order for the word to be spelled.  My son also loved building a spider web and trying to catch the bugs as they flew by.

iPhone Screenshot 5

In terms of enhancements, for the counting fireflies, it would be nice for children to be able to touch the bugs for counting or at least have a setting for them to do so as my son is used to touching to count and got the answer wrong several times when he tapped on them to count. A “hint” option for children struggling and getting the answer wrong multiple times.

This app is a fun app for your bug loving preschoolers through early elementary aged children which ties learning to fun with bugs!  Be sure to Grandma Loves Bugs – Fairlady Media“>grab it while the app is on an introductory sale for 50% off!

Mini-U: The Kitchen by PopAppFactory – Review

20131102-030543.jpg

What we love…

Challenging educational games and cute digital toys in a virtual kitchen.

What we’d love to see…

More great stuff!

Summary

Attractive, engaging, entertaining, fun and educational, Mini-U: The Kitchen is an excellent learning app for children in Pre-K and K levels to develop essential thinking skills.

Our Rating

If you are not a fan of PopAppFactory apps yet, now is a great time to check them out. PopAppFactory has just made one of their apps, Memoria: Letters and Numbers Mix FREE and their other new apps are still discounted at $0.99. Out of their 40+ apps, my kindergartner’s favorite app is the Mini-U: The Kitchen. It has fun games that never fail to make him laugh and thinking games that help develop skills like concentration, attention to details, visual discrimination, problem solving and logical reasoning.

Mini-U: The Kitchen features six interactive mini games – Italian Chef, Breakfast Composer, Fridge Operator, Product Sorter, Morning Tunes and Cocktail Maker, each of these games provide lots of learning opportunities with multiple levels to play and they are not as simple as they look!

Italian chef

Drag different pasta pieces to complete a pasta puzzle and then paint it according to a given pattern. This requires the player to first identify the correct pasta shapes to match their shadow. This sounds easy but the app makes it just a little more challenging by putting in excess pasta pieces that look very similar. The process of coloring the pasta also requires some planning.

Breakfast composer

Find hidden breakfast items from the many, many similar items in the kitchen. It is not easy to sort out all the visual information to locate a particular item but hints are always available when you need it. My son was initially lost but with guidance on some simple strategies, he began to enjoy the game.

Fridge operator

Put in the correct food items that match the various shadow in the fridge. Once again, there are extra items that have the same shape and size, included just to confuse you like an iPhone and a chocolate bar!

Product sorter

Sort the shopping items into edible and inedible as the items fall out of the shopping bag. 2 cute characters will tell you if you have sorted correctly or not and it’s fun to watch them.

Cocktail maker

Blend 2 different vegetables and fruits to make drinks of the same color as the one requested in the app. Here, you have to experiment with fruits and vegetables of different types and sizes to get the right color and shade.

Morning tunes

Tap on 20 different items to create your own music. This is a fun game and my favorite is the singing cat!

20131102-032740.jpg

There is no time limit to complete each game level in this app and you can refresh the screen to change the puzzle/level. There was plenty of time for my son to ask me questions and for himself to think about his moves. I also like that the app gives a generous show of approval (both written and verbal) when the child does something right or completes a game level.

Every aspect of this app is outstanding, the graphics is superb with lots of details to discover, the colors are bold and vivid, the kitchen characters are cute, the games are familiar yet challenging and the enthusiastic cheers and encouragement from the kitchen characters provide a truly fun learning experience for the kids. I highly recommend it.

Moose & Zebra. Sweden by DashForward Lab LLC – Review and Giveaway

What we love…

Distinctive color pencil illustrations, a variety of preschool learning activities which introduce interesting facts about Sweden at the same time.

What we’d love to see…

Text highlighting and an activity reset button.

Summary

A kid-safe and unique app for kids to learn about Sweden while practicing important preschool skills.

Our Rating

Moose & Zebra are 2 animal friends who will bring your child explore a different time and place while practicing important preschool skills. In their first app, they visited Zebra’s homeland in Africa and in this second app, they are traveling to Moose’s birth place in Sweden where they will share with your child all things Swedish through 15 interesting activities (and all these for just $0.99).

This is an app where both adults and kids can discover new things together. Did you know that the biggest palace in the world is found in Sweden? Besides that, you will also learn about the Swedish capital, the Scandinavian countries and their flags, the native animals, symbols of Sweden, the Vikings, Swedish traditional dishes and fun trivia like a popular male name in Sweden that means bear.

20131030-220353.jpg

The 15 activities in Moose & Zebra (Sweden) are varied and age appropriate for preschoolers – matching, maze, categorization, spot the difference and mistakes, shapes sorting, connect the dots, counting, visual discrimination, size comparison, patterns and left/right orientation. If help is needed in any activity, kids can tap the hint button (with option to turn off) for assistance.

A stamp is given upon completion of an activity and the child will be prompted to proceed to the next activity. You can return to any completed activity and play again but if you wish to replay the activity right after completing it, you will have to move to another activity first and return. A reset button would be nice to have in this case. Nonetheless, navigation between the activities is smooth, you can use the forward/backward buttons on each page to change the activity or choose from the home page.

20131030-220410.jpg

The text is read but you can turn it off and do the same to the music background if you wish. Two language options are available – English and Russian, which is great but I feel a text highlighting feature should be added for the benefit of the targeted age group.

On the whole, this is a high quality educational app with an affordable price tag. I love its distinctive color pencil illustrations and the original idea of designing different activities around the theme of a particular country. If you have a preschooler, I’m sure he/she will enjoy learning and playing with this app. For a start, go get yourself the Free Moose & Zebra. Africa!
