Minti Kids Dress Up LucaDo your kids love to buy outfits from Build-a-Bear and dress up their teddies? Then they’ll love the new app from Turkish developer Minti Kids. Minti Kids Dress up Luca is a child safe app with no adverts or in-app purchases. All external links are in a child-locked parents area; this also includes a video demonstration and suggestions on how to play with the app.

Luca is an adorable blue and white teddy bear but he doesn’t know what to wear -can your child help him to find the perfect outfit? Luca has a large wardrobe of clothes and the child can mix and match clothes and accessories to their hearts content.

What occasion is Luca getting dressed for now? Does he want to go out and play? Help him choose a shirt and shorts- maybe today he would like the orange T-shirt and blue shorts? As well as shorts and t-shirts he also has a selection of shoes, hats and accessories to choose from. If Luca is in a playful mood maybe he would like to wear a Santa hat, a pirate eye patch, or a cowboy hat?

Once Luca is in the perfect outfit for the occasion, the child can take a photo of him to save in their photo gallery. As well as taking a picture of him in his room they can also take him on an adventure and take pictures of him in their favorite places. Maybe they want a picture of Luca with the family pet, playing with their dolls, or visiting the beach? They can even add him to their own artwork by taking a picture of him with their masterpiece in the background. The child can pinch and zoom to make Luca appear bigger or smaller in the picture, and move him around- or even have him just peeking in at the edge of the picture.

Children can let their imagination soar mixing and matching different outfits for Luca to wear and then taking pictures of him on his adventures. After all that playing Luca is getting tired and ready for bed so it is time to pick out a pair of PJ’s and take a picture of him lying down ready for bed. After all Luca’s adventures it is a great time to sit down with your child and go through the photo gallery and talk about his different outfits and the different places and games he has been playing.

Built to entertain kids while improving their creativity ‘Minti Kids Dress Up Luca’ also promotes kids being giving and generous via helping Luca. A fun creative app designed for children aged 2-6 years, Minti Kids Dress up Luca is on an introductory sale for a limited time at 99c down from $2.99 so now is a great time to buy it!

Lola’s ABC Party 2 Kindergarten Practice is a universal app for iOS designed by BeiZ. BeiZ is a game studio who has offices in China and Finland and has designed a number of games for iOS and Android. This app is aimed at older preschoolers and early elementary aged children and focuses on fine motor, spoken and written language. The app starts with four activities including: flying a kite, making a picnic, making dessert and a fruit basket. Upon successful completion of ten questions in each section, the child is rewarded with an item such as a kite, sandwich, fruit basket and creating ice cream cones! The app allows you to practice skills in US English, British English, Suomi and pycckmn. The app states that after completion, your child will have learned up to 160 new words via spelling, and spelling. As you complete all of the activities, children can see their creations and get excited about the picnic.

iPad Screenshot 2

Lola’s ABC Party includes practice necessary to prepare children for kindergarten including: word identification using both a visual and spoken word, spelling out words using phonetic spelling, visual identification of words with a common theme “find all the x” items. After successfully answering five questions in a row, children are able to pick from a reward which builds out a scene for them from objects that they choose. After ten correct answers you get to build a sandwich in one of the mini games. One of my son’s favorite games was writing out letters using the trace function which required that you stay on the dots to successfully complete the tracing. I also liked that when you were spelling a word, it required you to sequentially place them in order rather than just putting them in as you “found them.”

iPad Screenshot 4

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see language choice included in the parental lock section so that children can’t accidentally change the language. I would also like to see the ability to have hints when children get “stuck” rather than keep taking away choices from the field or just saying “oops”. My son was frustrated with the “drag the missing letters” game as he wanted to see the image so he could connect the word with the spelling, it would be nice to have a “peek option” to reduce frustration. It would also be nice to have a parental report section showing parents areas that children may need to work on.

The app includes no in-app purchases and there is a parental gate which hides access to social media and external links to iTunes and the internet.

My son loved creating his own picnic after successfully completing each of the four activities and flying a kite – so much so that he wanted us to make one in real life!

Underwater Learning Adventure by emeeyou – Review & Giveaway

iPhone Screenshot 1

What we love…

simple to use for the youngest of learners targeting a variety of skills including vocabulary, number recognition, picture recognition and matching

What we’d love to see…

additional mini games for the app, an option to “test” out of the easier portions

Summary

This app targets older toddlers and preschoolers and is a good way to build foundational learning skills required to get ready for school

Our Rating

Underwater Learning Adventure by emeeyou is an app designed to help develop numbers, counting, memory, picture recognition and naming recognition as well as vocabulary.  The universal iOS app designed for preschool aged children involves three different learning games as well as the ability to build your own aquarium after successfully completing tasks.  The games automatically adjust based on the skill level of the player.  The app allows you to set up multiple player profiles making it perfect for families with multiple children or therapists.  It also includes a reporting feature which is inside a parent locked section of the app.

The app features bright colors which draw in preschoolers as well the background which allows you to touch some of the objects outside of the games.   The games are randomized which encourages learning versus understanding that a specific object goes in a specific place based upon previous interaction with the app.

iPhone Screenshot 3

The first game requires users to organize numbers from 1 – 20, although the number of items in the field will vary depending on the complexity of the current animal and your child’s skill level.   The numbers are randomly placed on the screen and the user must tap them in sequential order and “pop” the number.  After the numbers are all touched an object appears as a reward for successfully completing the task.  The numbers are arranged in the shape of the animal that will display upon completion.  During testing, we found a shark, dolphin, crab, octopus and jellyfish to name a few.  After successfully completing the series, you are rewarded with a choice of three animals for your virtual fish tank.

iPhone Screenshot 4

The second game involves “matching objects” using four treasure chests.  The treasure chests are opened for a quick “peek” when they are first displayed and the user must find the two matching objects out of the field treasure chests.  Once you have successfully matched the objects the treasure chest remains open.  As your child progresses through the app, there are more treasure chests added to the field making it more difficult for them to match them easily.

iPhone Screenshot 5

The third game is : “find an object” which involves finding an animal meeting a specific characteristic like the “smallest”, “find a specific color” and using direction such as “find the top fish” or “find the bottom fish”.  Directions are repeated if a user does not tap the screen or is unsuccessful in their choice.  If they make an improper choice, the screen shakes and they are encouraged to “try again” until successful.  There is no prompt per se if they repeatedly get the answer wrong but they must choose the right object from a field of three.

In terms of improvements, I would like to see additional games included.  The app currently features three games, which although they are randomized may become familiar to a child who is playing the app over and over again.  I would also like to see a “hint” option in the “find an object game” especially if the child gets it wrong over and over again.  The games do increase in complexity, and the simplest level may be too “boring” for children which means that they will not engage with it, as a result it would be nice to have a “test” or parent input section where children could quickly move on to another more advanced section of the app.  For the sequencing of numbers game, I might suggest that users are aware that it is not a “dot to dot” as my child wondered where the lines were when trying to make the objects.

The app features a parent lock which must be held for a specified number of seconds.  Behind that lock is the ability to add additional profiles for multiple children as well as parents, instructions on how to play the app as well as the ability to turn on and off sounds and music.  It also includes a report which shows your child’s mastery (based upon the current profile selected) of each of the three categories: numbers, memory, colors and sizes.  There are no unprotected external links, no advertising and no in-app purchases.

The app is best suited for older toddlers and preschoolers who are learning foundational learning skills to help them prepare for preschool and early elementary school.

The app can be downloaded for $1.99 from your local app store or by using our link below.

Terri at the Market – An Interactive Cartoon Storybook for Children by ONCE Digital Arts – Review

Terri at the Market

What we love…

Humorous descriptions of the lovable vegetable characters. Cute illustrations and bonus educational games.

What we’d love to see…

Text highlighting.

Summary

A refreshingly different storybook app about vegetables that may just change your child’s way of looking at vegetables.

Our Rating

Terri at the Market – An Interactive Cartoon Storybook for Children by ONCE Digital Arts is a very cute story about Terri who hates vegetables and how she came to love eating them after encountering some interesting vegetable characters at the Farmers Market. So what exactly happened that caused the 180 degree change?

20131023-194743.jpg
Thanks to Charlie, the chubby old vegetable seller at the market, Terri got to meet Buster Brussels Sprout, Bravo Broccoli, Carol Carrot, Mama Spuds, Mister Mushroom, Spinach, Sorrel, Polly Pumpkin and the Fantastic Tumbling Peas. She began to feel for these vegetables when she helped to rescue the Peas from the dreadful garbage dumpster, a place for unsold and wilted vegetables. You see, it’s every vegetable’s goal to be served on the plate of some lucky children, to help them grow big and strong instead of being thrown away.

20131023-194703.jpgWhile I can’t say that this story will lessen your child’s dislike for vegetables, but I’m positive that your child will enjoy Terri’s imaginative world of vegetables. Kids will find the lovable vegetable characters fascinating (microphone-shaped Bravo Broccoli dreams of performing on chopping blocks around the world) and then slowly warm up to them, just like how Terri was. There are fun animations and suitably placed interactive spots for your child to explore in the app. The music is upbeat and the cartoon illustrations are cute. Besides an 18-page story, the app also comes with 4 bonus games that are suitable for preschoolers and older. There is a weighing scale game for practicing simple addition and subtraction, a color matching game, vegetable puzzles and coloring pages.

20131023-194651.jpgThis storybook app can be enjoyed in 5 languages – English, Deutch, Espanol, Magyar and Chinese. The text are read but there is no text highlighting. To read the book yourself, you simply turn down the volume of the narration in the settings (with separate audio controls for the music and sound effects as well). Terri at the Market is rather wordy compared to the typical book apps but there are many vocabulary words introduced here which are suitable for children up to elementary school levels.

20131023-194641.jpg

On the whole, Terri at the Market is a wonderful multi-lingual app to get your child acquainted with vegetables like he had never imagined. So regardless whether your child loves or loathes his greens, make sure you check this out if you are looking for something refreshingly different.
