Babii! by Skybound Interactive Ltd. – Review

screen babii

Animals and vehicles are among the first nouns that young children are taught. Besides showing the real thing, you can also introduce these and accelerate your child’s vocabulary learning with the use of pictures. Here, the use of an app has an advantage over picture books and flashcards in that apps allow children to hear the names as well as the sounds made by the animals and vehicles. Kids can learn independently with minimum effort.

What we love…

Children get to see each animal/vehicle in different settings and engaged in different activities.

What we’d love to see…

More categories to be added.

Summary

An easy to use and kid-safe app for toddlers to learn about animals and vehicles with more categories of nouns planned.

Our Rating

Babii! by Skybound Interactive Ltd. is one such app that is easy for toddlers to use and affordable for the parents. The app starts right away upon opening and young children just need to tap on the screen of the device to see the next picture. With each tap, they get to learn the name of each animal/vehicle, how they look and sound like as well as their natural habitat/environment.

There are 2 ways the animals/vehicles are presented in Babii! – a grid of 9 thumbnail images or a 1-image mode. Each of the thumbnail images focuses on a group of similar animals or vehicles. Tapping an image from the grid will expand it to full screen and another tap will return it to the grid. Repeated tapping on the same grid will show the animals or vehicle in different settings and in different actions – swimming, running, eating, etc. This helps children to generalize their knowledge. In 1-image mode, the images are shown randomly and is perfect for younger children.

The photos used are of high resolution and the sound recording associated with each image is clear. Currently, the app uses Siri to read the names of the animals and vehicles. A future move to using pre-recorded voice will be a welcomed improvement. Switching between the 3 categories – Domestic Animals, Wild Animals and Vehicles, is straightforward and I understand that there are plans for more categories to be added.

You can also switch the language used by the app to different accents of English, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese or Romanian without having to change your device’s language setting. This is definitely a bonus for children growing up in multilingual families/communities.

A child’s early years are the best time for building knowledge and for those of you who are looking for apps to introduce your toddlers to the world of animals and vehicles while stimulating their minds through the exposure of foreign languages, Babii! is a good and affordable app to consider.

An Adventure of Our Own – Review

IMG_8710

Frequent communication is key to strong parent-child relationship and here is an interesting way to get kids and their parents to interact while reading and playing together.

What we love…

Lots of decision making opportunities and open-ended questions to encourage parents and children’s full participation.

What we’d love to see…

A ‘read to me’ option and ability to save progress.

Summary

A great book app for parent-child interactions, providing readers with hours of imaginative play and valuable insights into the children’s minds.

Our Rating

An Adventure Of Our Own by Two Way Play is an interactive read and play book app for children and their parents (or other family members or even friends) to create their own adventure story together. While the sequence of events is fixed, readers build up the story by adding the details using the props (provided in-app) and their collective imagination.

The plot is jointly decided by the players and can change each time they play with the book. Right from the beginning of the story, the two players have to work together to flesh out their story. They begin by imagining and talk about what kind of emergency call they need to attend to. Different options are offered for each element in the story. While some aspects of the story (e.g. the setting and rescue plan) are agreed upon together, others are decided individually as each player select their own outfits, gadgets, vehicles and tools for their adventure.

There are lots of decision-making moments in this book and each comes with an open-ended question to encourage players to elaborate on their choices. This gave me valuable insights into my youngest son’s mind – his feelings, thoughts and the experiences that shaped his thinking. I was also careful not to impose my thoughts on his responses.

However, this story making session went on longer than what I had expected. I wish the app would allow me to save the progress of our story to be continued at the next session, instead of starting all over after we closed the app. Or perhaps give us a way to skip the earlier pages in the story as our choices before the rescue tools have no impact on the rest of the story. Also helpful if there are prompts on what actions are required on each page when there is no response from the players for a long time. For example, when players have to choose more than 1 item in order to move on to the next page. An added option for audio narration will also greatly benefit young readers playing with their friends.

While its simple illustrations (that look like children’s drawings), the minimal sound effects and animation allow players to focus on their collaboration itself, the app may come across as amateurish for those of us who are accustomed to more sophisticated book apps. Perhaps this is intentional.

Nonetheless, I like this new and meaningful way of sharing a read and play book app. My son likes the imaginative names of the various items in the story (e.g. seeing eye crystal and 3-wishes poof powder) as they give him all sorts of fun ideas on how to use them. Our story got more exciting because of them. The end of the story is unusual too as readers are asked about their feelings and thoughts on their adventure together. Helpful words like brave, clever, heroic, successful and tired are offered to facilitate the discussion. The app ends with yet another opportunity to talk – take another selfie, go to sleep or go on another adventure?

Overall, I recommend that you check it out. An Adventure of Our Own is a great book app for parent-child interactions, providing you with hours of imaginative play and valuable insights into your children’s minds.

Roxy and the Ballerina Robot – Review

img_8788

There has been a dearth of book apps on families that are relevant to today’s world. This makes a simple and realistic story like Roxy and the Ballerina Robot by Jackrabbit Publishing LLC a rare treat for families who are looking for stories that their children can relate to personally.

What we love…

Characters and issues that young children can relate to personally.

What we’d love to see…

A more challenging task for unlocking access to external links. Perhaps using ‘Dad’ and ‘Mum’ in place of their names in the story.

Summary

Readers learn about wise money habits in this rare book app that promotes strong relationship in the modern family.

Our Rating

The story begins with Roxy’s desire to buy the newest toy, the Ballerina Robot after watching its commercial. She starts to save up and happily completes her daily chores to earn money in order to buy the toy. However, she got discouraged when she did not succeed and became angry. Sounds familiar? Your children will be eager to know how Roxy worked out a plan and succeeded in the end.

Children being influenced by toy commercials is a sign of the times that we all have to face. How do we teach our children how to deal with their wants, work towards their goals, resist the temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward? This book offers you opportunities to discuss these modern day issues with your children and teach them important life values at the same time.

I like that this story presents strong and healthy family relationships which is important for any family configuration. Spending time together doing routine stuff provides the adults in the family with lots of teachable moments in a non-intimidating way. Roxy and her dad don’t just share fun times together but they have rough moments as well. Whatever the situation is, there is always communication between them.

My youngest enjoyed reading the story by himself and found it refreshingly different from the usual make-believe storybook apps that he is used to. I think he likes it because he can totally relate to Roxy. For younger readers, the book app comes with an option for audio narration and has the words highlighted in sync with the narration (available in English, Spanish and French). Furthermore, it allows readers to tap and hear individual words which helps them to learn new words. There is also a page menu that can take readers directly to any of the 28 pages in the story.

The beginning of a new year is always a great time to start a good personal habit like saving. In this story, Roxy becomes more aware about her impulsive spending habits and learns how she can be patient and in control of her money. So if you are planning to introduce (or reintroduce) your children to a saving habit, Roxy and the Ballerina Robot is the perfect book choice to help kick start it.

EduGuru Maths Kids age 3-5 educational games by The Game Creators – Review

eduguru-maths-all-games-screenshot-1

As an app reviewer who has tried many Maths app, I don’t get impressed very often. But EduGuru Maths Kids age 3-5 educational games by The Game Creators made me sit up and pay attention with its well designed Maths games that introduce Maths concepts progressively to young players in a visual way.

What we love…

A variety of skill building games to help students learn and practise a range of Maths concepts.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to repeat the audio of instructions for all games.

Summary

A well designed app that introduces Maths concepts progressively to young players while challenging them to think and learn beyond memorisation.

Our Rating

There are altogether 8 games, each with several game levels, targeting a range of important mathematical concepts and skills:-

* Cosmic Counting – counting to 20, more or less, number patterns, number order, number sets, odd one out
* Meadow Maths – counting on and back, adding up and taking away up to 10
* Shape Sort – shapes, colours, colouring shapes, odd one out, pattern puzzles
* Fishing Fun – size, weight, comparing quantities, high and low, far and near, big and small
* Space Solver – matching, doubling, halving, sharing out items
* Captain Clock – minute hand, hour hand, setting the analogue clock to the hour
* Money Pig – UK coins – 1 pence to 2 pounds, putting coins in order of value, coin values
* Match Up – shape identification, counting to 15

image

From the home screen, kids can choose to play any of the games and they have to complete each game level in order to unlock the next. You can set up the game levels to be partially or even all unlocked if you find the lower levels to be too basic for your child. This level control however, applies to all the user accounts (up to 6 accounts).

image

What I like about this app is the gradual incremental level of difficulty in the games where a new skill is added one level at a time while building upon the skills that were practiced in earlier levels. For example in the Meadow Maths game, children are at first given the exact number of farm animals to put into the pen, then they are given more than the required number of animals to add into the pen. After that, kids practise taking away the extra animals out of the pen before they are tasked to find out how many animals to add or take away from the pen to match the number requested. A number sentence is displayed at the top and the app will show if the answer submitted by the child is correct or not, visually.

image

If kids find the progress to be too fast, repeated play of the earlier game levels (different questions each time) will help them build confidence. Each game level is short in duration and kids can switch to another game before they get bored or frustrated. Or they can turn to the nursery rhymes on the home screen for entertainment.

image

There are many Maths skills that are being introduced here. Some of the more advanced concepts are even appropriate for the early elementary level. However, there is no direct teaching in most of the game levels. Instead, the app equips you with the game descriptions and objectives. While kids will learn as they play the games in sequence, more challenging concepts like doubling and halving (early multiplication and division) will need your guidance.

image

You can see how well your child is progressing by looking at the number of stars and the type of medal (bronze, silver and gold) he/she has achieved for each game – straightforward progress tracking and simple rewards that will appeal to younger children.

This app is the first in the EduGuru series of educational apps for the 3-5 age group, the other three being English, Science & Technology and Art & Music. Based on the high quality shown in this Maths app, I anticipate more creative skill building EduGuru games that will make children think. Meanwhile, download the free lite version of the app and try some of the games. It’s worth the time and effort!
