The iBitz Unity and PowerKey activity trackers are a great idea to get the whole family active and moving.

If you are looking for a way to encourage your whole family to get active and exercise more, iBitz ™ has a great solution for you. IBitz™ has activity trackers designed for adults and ones designed especially for children. The trackers work together so you can monitor the whole family’s activity level in one app.

The iBitz™ Unity

Designed for adults this activity tracker is a tiny unit with a strong clip that is designed to attach to your waistband, pocket or shoe. It is available in a range of different colors including black, pink, purple blue and red. You need to use it in conjunction with an iPhone or iPad (compatible with: iPhone 4S/5, iPad 4,iPad Mini and 5th Gen iPod touch). All its data is displayed via a free app the iBitz Unity – GeoPalz LLC. We tested it with the iPhone 5. The device syncs wirelessly to your iPhone via Bluetooth.

unity blackThe Unity app tracks your steps, calories burned, distance walked and overall activity. You also enter your height and weight (manually) and it can keep track of weight changes (if you enter your weight regularly) and your BMI. It does not track sleep. With the iPhone in portrait mode it will show you current data from today, if you turn it to landscape mode you can view graph’s showing data by the hour, day, week, month or year so you can get an overview of trends in your activity level, and see how many calories you have burned, steps you have taken and distance you have walked over your chosen time period. By tapping on any given day in this period you can also see the data from just that day. Once a week you will get an email report of your activity for the previous week.

distance-weekly

One thing I love about the app is that not only can you measure your own activity but you can add the profiles of your family members to check all their data too. You can check to see if your husband and kids have been achieving their activity goals too and help cheer each other on. To sync data from your iBitz™ Unity and your family members iBitz™ Unity or Powerkey you need to log in to their account from your app and also be within Bluetooth range to sync.. You also need a Wifi connection so that app can connect to the online data base. It is a good idea to synch every 1-3 days, if you leave it longer the data upload can take a while.

The iBitz™ Unity has an RRP of $49.99 and is available from from iBitz.com , REI, Target or many other retailers.

iBitz™ PowerKey

Ibitz powerkeyThe iBitz™ PowerKey is the child activity tracker. It looks identical to the adult version but comes with its own app iBitz PowerKey – GeoPalz LLC. To use this app the parent needs to create a user account for the child, and they use this to log in to the Powerkey app. If only one child is using your iPhone or tablet to track their Powerkey they can keep logged in but if multiple children are using it they will need to log out between users.

When they log in to the Powerkey app they see their GeoBotz virtual pet – he is color-coded to match the color of their Powerkey (if multiple family members have them it is a good idea for everyone to have their own unique color). The GeoBot looks a little like a cross between a iDog and a rabbit. To keep their pet happy the child gives him energy and feeds him with food and drinks they earn from their activity. There are also a number of free iOS games linked to the iBitz – they can be downloaded via links in the Powerkey app. By being active the child earns time to play on the iOS game, once they have used up their time the game is unusable until they do more activity and earn more time credit. There are currently five associated games available: Pipe in Again Geopalz Edition – Difference Games, Legor 2 GeoPalz – Difference Games, Blops GeoPalz Edition – Difference Games, Chute Academy GeoPalz Edition – Difference Games, and Monkie GeoPalz Edition – Difference Games. The child typically earns a few minutes play for a days activity. The app will soon also have an option to use their rewards to play in Club Penguin.

The iBitz™ Powerkey has an RRP of $34.99 and is available from from iBitz.com , REI, Target or many other retailers.

Testing

I have tested out both the Unity and Powerkey devices with my family. I really like the fact that there is one parental app where you can monitor everyone’s activity level. Unlike some other activity trackers there is no annual fee to use these trackers so at $34.99 for the Powerkey and $49.99 for the Unity they are quite economical options compared to many others on the market. The Unity or Powerkey take a button battery which lasts about 6 months, and a spare comes in the package. When using the Unity myself, my preference is to clip it inside my pocket- it is small enough you hardly notice it there. Here is a picture showing it next to a quarter for comparison:

20131028-133815.jpg

It does have a very strong clip, but I would really like to see a lanyard added, which you could attach to a belt loop as an added precaution, as I did lose one tracker from my pocket. With my son I attached his tracker to his shoe (clipped on to his laces) and it seemed quite safe there. I really liked having both a parent and child app – he could check in Progress and use his rewards in the Powerkey app, and I could keep a watchful eye on his activity in the Unity app. I was pleasantly surprised at how much activity he was doing at school – I had no idea he was typically doing 3-4 miles a day walking/ running during his school day!

Overall, the iBitz family of activity trackers are a great idea to get the whole family active and moving. I love having one central app where I can check on everyones activity in one place, and look back to see how their activity has changed over time. The Powerkey does add a few different incentives to encourage the child to get active- from looking after their virtual pet, to playing video games. How well these work will depend on the individual child, and if one of this virtual reward systems doesn’t work for them parents can always add their own incentives too.

Clashot by Depositphotos – Review

clashot

What we love…

easy to use app which provides you with the ability to take photos and make reports with them and submit them for publication via the app

What we’d love to see…

more instructions on what types of pictures to take

Summary

If you enjoy taking photos – and have many trapped on your device, you should consider trying out Clashot and uploading them for others to see and possibly buy.

Do you enjoy taking photographs using your iPhone?  Do you wish you could make a little bit of money selling them as stock photography?  A new app, Clashot by Depositphotos is a mobile app that allows you to take or use photos that you have taken and then you can upload them to a database of stock photography enabling them to be sold to publications or to the general public.  The app does require registration and acceptance of the terms and conditions which states that the photographs you upload are your own and not taken from someone else.  The app features three options – “wizard” which helps you compile your photos together into a “report” where you can upload several photos of an event or item and then title it, describe it and then categorize it.  You can do this with photos of specific events, nature or any types of photos.  Other options include “feed” where you can see the photos other have taken, “camera” where you can just take photos using the app, “profile” to see information about yourself and photos you have uploaded.

The app was easy and straightforward to use.  I took a few photos using my olloclip lens of nature and tried out the various options in the app.  The app asked  for permission to view your camera roll – which you can turn on and off as you wish.  I also liked that you could have a setting that would allow you to upload photos over wi-fi only which is great for saving your data plan.  I also liked seeing the photos that others uploaded and reports that they provided.

Of note, I did have a few issues with the app crashing, but once I installed the update it seemed to work fine.  You can also upload photos via the internet as well if you are having trouble with the app.  I would also like to see a “tips” section of the app which provides information about the types of pictures that might sell or be best to include in your uploads.

If you enjoy taking photos – and have many trapped on your device, you should consider trying out Clashot and uploading them for others to see and possibly buy.

SeaGate Wireless Plus by Seagate – Review

What we love…

portable easy to use wireless solution for storing movies, videos, pictures all without having to take up space on your device.  Also loved it streamed to three devices at once and the ability to only have to connect once

What we’d love to see…

Attaching of the “port” cover so it can not get misplaced while charging the drive

Summary

Great device for storing movies, documents, videos on the go and a fantastic alternative to bringing a portable DVD player on trips.  This device will work for many including families, travellers or anyone with an overflowing smartphone or tablet.

Our Rating

recommended by the imums

Seagate MediaDo you have memory woe’s on your devices?  SeaGate Wireless Plus is there to help!  This small drive which is about the size of your hand holds a whopping 1 terabyte of data and works with a variety of devices and smartphones including iOS, Kindle Fire and Android.  It includes the ability to pass through Wi-Fi and you only need to connect your devices to the drive rather than having to connect to Wi-Fi which is especially handy if you are out and about and don’t want to connect multiple iPads, iPhones or other devices to the drive.  I tested the device using my iPad, iPhone as well as a Samsung Blu-Ray player and Android Smartphone.  For the iOS devices and the Android smartphone there is a free app you can use to work with the drive and manage your media.  You do have to hook it up to a desktop to download items to start with especially movies as they take a long time to load for the first time.  The product was named Best Product at the Consumer Electronics show earlier this year and has won several other awards.

I loved that I could stream movie and music files to my smartphone, tablet, laptop and even via my Blu-Ray Player.  It’s also a great way to store videos and television shows  for your children for long car rides to keep them entertained versus having to bring along a portable DVD player which will also need charging.  The response time is fast and it works using a browser on the iPad versus the native video tab – the video’s play back clearly and with no stuttering in playback.  I also love that you can copy pictures over from your devices onto the drive which means that it is a great backup mechanism especially when you are away and taking lots of pictures or video’s that you want to be sure are not lost.  I also loved that you could stream to up to three devices at once which meant that I could watch what I wanted to and other family members could watch what they wanted to making it a win-win for all of us!  Having the built-in internet was another huge plus since when we travel I frequently have to configure multiple devices to connect to a network – this way I could just configure the Seagate Wireless Plus and then have my devices connect to that!  It also made picture sharing really easy as I could have people connect, grab the photos or videos they wanted at the time and take them rather than having to worry about sending off a CD or print photos at a later date.  I have a large music library, but don’t keep it on my iPhone because I have so many apps and other things on it.  I’ve enjoyed listening to my music without having to worry about data charges while out and about.

In terms of improvements  I would like to see the port cover somehow “attached” to the drive so it can not be misplaced by mistake when you are charging the drive.  I pulled it off to charge my drive and had a hard time finding it when it was all charged up.  I also found that the battery life was not quite as high as I would have hoped – Seagate reported an average battery life of about 10 hours –  and I found that about six was the maximum I could get.

This is a fantastic device if you are like me and have an overflowing smart phone or tablet.  Although you can’t store apps on here – moving videos, music, television shows, documents and more makes it a portable on the go solution.   The built in wireless is a huge plus as is the huge capacity and the availability to use it on multiple devices.    This will be a fantastic device for families on the go as well as families who want to have  a portable easy to back up solution for photos, videos, documents and any other materials on the go.  I can also see it being helpful for travelers for work or anyone who needs a media solution that is portable, easy to use on multiple devices and has a long battery life.  Well done Seagate!

You can purchase the Seagate Wireless plus for approximately $199.99 directly from Seagate, Amazon, Best Buy,  New Egg,  and many other retailers.

Quipio By Every Second Counts, Inc.

Quipio

What we love…

Easy to use and put your own spin on words and photos

What we’d love to see…

a different audio sound to alert you when someone says mmmm.

Summary

Fun app for parents to use, not great for younger children due to social media integration

Our Rating

QuipioQuipio by New York based developer Every Second Counts, Inc. takes the form of a photo and allows you to add your own caption and “twist” to it.  The app allows you to choose a photo, video, blog post or text message, add your own comment with a variety of typing filters and then share it to a variety of social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Quipio, Email, SMS and via your photo library.  To use the app you start by typing a message, it can be short or a simple status update, you then use a lightbulb to highlight the most important words and then can choose from a set of filters and themes for the text, add your own photo background or not and then post it to social media.  In the time since the app has been released there have been more than 120 thousand downloads, over 90 thousand quips and most users use it about 11 minutes per user per day.

As someone who loves to take pictures and put their own spin on it – I really enjoyed playing with this app.  I reminded me of Instragram but was better since I could put my own text on the photo at the moment of time rather than having to take the photo, play with the image and then put the tags onto it.  I really liked that the app emphasized highlighted words and added a funkiness to the text while making it meaningful to my photo.  Users can comment and like Quips from within the app as well as on your various social media channels.

I do wish the audio sound when you someone says, “mm” to your quip was a bit different.  The first time I heard it, I thought that someone hadn’t liked my post.  Perhaps a small applause or even a thumbs up option would be good.  I would also like to be able to shut off the audio sound as well.

This is an app that I see parent’s using more than younger children just because of the access to social media, however, I can see teachers using it for a classroom or perhaps to create visuals.  This app is fun to play with and addictive – I think you will be seeing more of it in my Facebook and social media feeds.
