What we love…

fun way to share stories with kids via an iPad for either a grandparent, travelling parent or someone who may want to spend time with a child via a storybook

What we’d love to see…

parental gate to prevent accidental in-app purchases, introduction of a lower cost price model for new books,

Summary

Great app that includes Christian based stories, but it needs a parental gate to get a higher rating.

Our Rating

The LuvYa Reader Recorder and LuvYa Reader are two companion apps for iOS designed to allow someone to read a story and another person can then listen to it.  I can see this being perfect for a grandparent who wants to read their grandchild a story before bedtime but might live far away or perhaps a parent that travels so that their child would know they are thinking of them.  All of the stories have a Christian theme to them and you record them on a page by page basis.  The app includes 41 books, 15 Christmas titles and 24 devotions with new content being added daily.  There is a free book you can record online as well to try out the app.

The graphics in the app were bright and I liked that the stories could be “recorded” and then “read” in a separate app.  The app includes “four free” titles when you first open it up which allows you to record the words on the page.  You can read the stories on a page by page basis or record them continuously until you get to the end.  I found that reading them on a page by page basis gave me a chance to take a breath in between pages similar to what you would experience when reading a real storybook.   There is not a lot of Christian content in the app store which is “true” to the bible and these stories were well written and illustrated so I think that the app fills that market niche.  The stories are non-denominational and based upon the bible, which means that anyone who is Christian can use them.  I also found recording in a quiet room gave me the best sound quality for the stories and devotionals.   I also liked that you could preview the titles before purchasing, which is important to ensure that the stories are a good fit, especially when they are as expensive between $1.99 and $4.99 each.

The app needs a parental gate to protect young fingers from buying content by mistake.  I’d also like to see the number of “shares” of the story removed before adding another fee.  This might be a good subscription based app (paying a flat rate per month of use of the app) or perhaps including the ability to purchase a few books together (buy three get them for x cost) rather than paying for them individually.  The books range in price from $1.99 – $4.99 which can be a long especially for one of the shorter books which can be recorded quickly.  I would suggest turning off in-app purchases on your device to ensure that nothing is accidentally purchased. Also of note, the recordings are stored on the cloud, so you must have wi-fi in order to use the app.  It would be nice to be able to save the recordings somewhere so you can listen to them in various places without needing wi-fi.

Overall, this is a nice way that a person who lives far away can share stories with your child or even if they might not be home for a bedtime at night.  With the addition of a parental gate and lower priced model for new books, I can see the app being very popular in the iTunes store.

What we love…

easy to use child-safe drawing app which features pre-designed canvases as well as the ability to create your own and share with others in a child safe environment.  I also loved the narration feature as well.

What we’d love to see…

more textures similar to traditional drawing media like crayons and colored pencils with the ability to tighten up the tip size more easily

Summary

Comprehensive drawing app that allows both open drawing as well as canvases that you can fill in with your creations. The narration feature and ability to share artwork safely set this app apart from others in the category.

Our Rating

Drawp Unlimited - Family Art and Messaging AppDrawp Unlimited by Moondrop Entertainment is an iPad only app which allows your child to create original artwork.  After the artwork is created it can be shared via the Drawp.it website for viewing/printing via a single swipe which does not require your child to have any external access points.  The app features entry either via a child or grownup section.  Once you are in the app you can either go into the drawing room where you can create new art, view your drawings, see any friends (which are created via a parent account) or look at your profile.

Once you go into the drawing room, you can choose either a blank canvas which allows you to create either using a blank canvas or one of the other pre-designed canvases which are similar to coloring pages where you can fill them in using the color palette.  One of the unique features of the app is the ability to record your voice after you finish your drawing which can be used to narrate it or simply announce the title.  We also liked the uncluttered interface which meant that younger children could use it without feeling overwhelmed with all the drawing options, while older children could and try out textures like crayon wax (similar to shading with the side of a crayon), hair wax (similar to using a highlighter on the edges and a thick tip in the middle), builder bits (which made a design similar to a racetrack with different pieces, thunder trouble (similar effect to a watercolor painting where you do drops on a canvas,Collide-O-Chromes (which reminded me of chopped up crayon bits melted together in a confetti pattern), fluff fiesta (which is similar to using puffy paint), cotton candy (similar to a soft pastel like cotton candy at a fair).  He used both a stylus as well as his finger – the stylus was a bit tricky to get the designs right for his abstract art since he couldn’t choose the tip size perfectly (there is a way to choose larger or smaller but it’s preset limits didn’t let him get the exact tip he wanted).

My son spent hours exploring this app and has used it to create both the pre-made canvases as well as his own versions of abstract art.  He also took a few selfies using the camera function and then drew onto them with a variety of fun designs.    He did use the letters to practice his upper case and lower case letters which was a good way to practice on the iPad using a stylus.  As a parent, I liked that it was easy to use and had a short learning curve for my son to start using it.  He loves creating art and so this was a fun way for our family to be able to see it.  We did use the Drawp.it website but primarily saved it to the camera roll since I wanted to share the photos with our family using the Tinybeans app which I used to share photos already.  One enhancement in the app that I liked, was the ability to print out his creations.  You can print out individual pictures, create a canvas wrap for the wall, create a photo book of masterpieces created throughout the year, or even greeting cards.  I liked the greeting card option, because it meant my son could create a card and then I could have them printed for invitations, or even thank you notes.  I liked that it was easier to upload creations as my son had several traditional media drawings that he wanted to upload to the gallery to share with family. Another fun feature – we hadn’t initially considered was the ability to share drawings like a game of “what is this” back and forth using contacts which was fun since we used it almost like Pictionary or “what is this”.

My son told me he missed some of the traditional textures like colored pencils or a traditional crayon.  There are palettes which allow you to color but they don’t give the refined lines like a crayon or the shading you can get from a colored pencil.  I also had some trouble inside the parental area when I uploaded photos as there was a delay in getting my photos but I’m not sure if that was my wi-fi or just the site being slow.  I also would have liked an easier way to add contacts.

Overall, this is a fun app that has some great enhancements compared to the original including the ability to print your artwork.  It can be used really from toddler age up and provides a medium to be able to store your artwork safely in the cloud.  The narration feature sets this app apart from other drawing apps as it allows your child to provide a description or even share their voice while using the app.

What we love…

routines, practicing listening skills, following directions

What we’d love to see…

use of utensils and more pots in the kitchen and different activities such as sorting laundry by type.

Summary

Overall, I think this is a great app to use with a preschooler or toddler to help them learn new word associations and practice them as well as routines

Our Rating

Monki Home - Language Learning for Kids and ToddlersMonki Home – Language Learning for Kids and Toddlers by Monkium SL is a iOS app that will help your toddlers and preschoolers learn everyday words in a Spanish, English and Chineese.  The app features four different mini games, the first of which is included in the app and the others are available via in-app purchases.

In order to unlock the in-app purchases you can either pay the fee, enter your email address and subscribe to their newsletter or share the app on social media.  The in-app purchase portion of the app requires the use of a parental lock to ensure that tiny fingers are not in the iTunes store or other areas that they should not be.

The first mini game occurs in the kitchen, where character  tells you want he wants to eat.  You take the item from the refrigerator and then follow the directions like cooking it in a pan or putting it in the microwave.  My son thought it was funny to serve food straight from the refrigerator, however, Elliott showed his distaste for the food by making a sad face when you did that.  The second mini game has you putting laundry into the machine that is dirty, as you put each item into the machine it is named like socks, and shirt and after washing you hang them up.  After that you iron selected clothes to help remove the excess water.  In the next mini game you are in the bathroom where you follow a typical nighttime routine by brushing teeth and rinsing your mouth.  Afterward you take a shower and rinse and dry off and put in your hair ornaments.  In the final mini game you have to help clean up the bedroom by sorting toys according to the animals requests like “dirty pony”, big versus little,  empty versus full.  After completing you are rewarded with music and the toys dancing.  My son’s favorite part was tucking the animals into bed at night.

iPad Screenshot 5

I liked that the app had you follow a variety of steps in order to complete the tasks and wouldn’t let you advance until they were completed.  This helped practice sequencing in addition to language.  I also liked that the narration was clear and easy to follow for kids and that the characters switched jobs each time that you opened it.  I also liked that you had to listen carefully in order to complete a task rather than just playing “the way you wanted to”.

In terms of improvements, I would like to see that the step has to be completed correctly in the kitchen as well as the use of a fork and knife or spoon as they eat the food.  I would also like to see a few more pots in the kitchen as well as sorting the laundry by type or light versus dark.

Overall, I think this is a great app to use with a preschooler or toddler to help them learn new word associations and practice them as well as routines.  This is fun for toddlers and preschoolers and I think will provide many hours of entertainment for children in that age group.  I also think it could be used in speech therapy as well.

What we love…

bright colorful graphics, good problem solving for the characters, use of parental gate

What we’d love to see…

Tweaks to the bookshelf area allowing you to directly access apps you already own and have downloaded as well as the use of “safe” YouTube video previews like after you read the book.  Would also like more interactivity in the books

Summary

Fun app that allows you to read a variety of books about characters and then see a video performance after it is completed.

Our Rating

Bamba Books Bamba Books by Bamba is an app for iOS featuring a variety of storybooks with characters from other Bamba apps. The app has three modes, you can either “read the story yourself”, have the story read to you with a narrator or watch a video about the story.  The video tab requires the solving a simple math problem and after solving it, pulls you through to YouTube to watch the video.  The app narration is available in English, Spanish, German, and Russian.  The free portion of the app contains three books and with a IAP you can purchase an additional three books.  In addition, you can click on the video tab to see YouTube previews of various Bamba apps (and later other videos since you are pulled directly to YouTube); and finally a bookshelf of Bamba apps, you are required to solve another math problem before being pulled into the iTunes store even if you already own the app and have it installed on your device.

Overall, I like the concept of “one stop shopping” for the books.  The narration and graphics are well done.  It is easy to turn on and off the narration via  tap of the “lips” at the top of the screen allowing an independent reader more control.  I love the creativity within the app during the reading of the books, especially making the cake with candy, books, flowers and ice cream!  For the farm story, I also really liked how sequential the app was and followed along nicely especially for new readers.    Each of the stories also has the characters that practice problem solving such as how to decorate the cake, how to get the animals back in the pen and how to navigate the airport.

I would like to see word highlighting within the stories as they are read aloud.  For the stories, such as the birthday cake, I’d like to see more interactivity.  Right now it is really a story being read to you and the only element of the story you can interact with is the tapping of an arrow rather than mixing the cake, putting it in the oven, frosting the cake.  I’d also like to see more stories added to the IAP version of the app to give you more value for the dollar.

Oddly, after you finish reading the story, the app does have the video play without pulling you through to the YouTube version so I’d like to see consistency on this throughout the app.  For the YouTube video portion, I’d like to see the video’s play within the app rather than requiring you to solve a math problem and pulling you through to YouTube.  Although when you go through the first time, you are taken directly to the video you selected, if you tap on the video’s to the left you will see advertising as well as other choices for video’s.  In terms of other improvements, it would be nice if you clicked on a Bamba app that you owned and was installed on your device if it would open up skipping the iTunes store directly.  Right now, this section is really an advertising area which shows the preview of the app and if you click “download now” it requires the solving of a math problem in order to access iTunes.

The first three books in the app are free, and the other three books require an IAP of $3.99.
