Dr. Panda Firefighters by Dr. Panda Games – Review

What we love…

graphics, step by step directions for getting the animals ready to fight the fire and of course spraying the water at the fire.

What we’d love to see…

better design for driving the firetruck, ability to put out the fire entirely before moving on to the next floor

Summary

Overall, fun app that takes an imaginary fire to the next level.  My son enjoyed narrating and playing with the app while completing each of the tasks.

Our Rating

Dr. Panda FirefightersDr. Panda Firefighters is a universal app for iOS that lets your child fight fires, drive a fire truck, clear obstacles, explore over 30 rooms and more.  This app is designed for toddler age and up and features Dr. Panda and his friends as they drive the firetruck to the scene of the fire, turn on the water and look around for flames to extinguish.  It reminded me very much of playing fire engines as a kid, except Dr Panda was able to physically make the rooms rather than me having to imagine them.  The app is great for toddler and preschoolers especially.  It can be used to practice following directions, expressive language to narrate what they are doing and following along with the animals to rescue them. There is also cause and effect of fighting the fire, handing over the tools and moving on to the next level.

The app opens in the firehouse where the firetruck is waiting to be cleaned.  As the alarm bell rings, the animals scurry to get dressed in their coats.   With that the firetruck leaves to go to the fire the fun begins.  First you get dressed, then you drive the truck to the scene and begin fighting the fire.  The firefighters ask for different tools like a shovel or axe to help move around the fire and get the animals out.  You use a crank to move the ladder up and down to move to each different level of the fire.  Currently the firefighters yell, “hey” or “help me” as they need different tools to fight the fire.  The tools include a shovel, axe and bucket of water.  Fires can occur in any of the buildings, my son enjoyed the office building and apartment complex the most.  For each “game” you go through several levels to fight the fire which involve things like rescuing animals, handing the firefighters tools and spraying water.  After each fire is completed, the “Dr Panda Daily” shows a completed photo of the animals safely outside the fire.  Quick tip, you can pick either the monkey or Dr. Panda by choosing where you hand the axe to when you start the app.

The graphics and animation are well done and I liked the step by step process of the animals getting ready, driving the truck to the scene and each member taking on a job.  My son liked that he could “fight” the fire with both water and rescue the other animals.  The graphics were bright and easy to see.   My son really liked spraying the water to put out the fire – which he thought was especially fun.  He liked getting the animals dressed and ready to head out to fight the fire.  My son liked narrating the app as we went along describing what he was doing like handing the axe to the monkey or “cooling down and putting out the fire”.  My son also wanted to “wash” the firetruck with the sponge but was sad that he couldn’t.

In terms of improvements, I’d like to see a better experience driving the firetruck.  Currently you twist the steering wheel to drive, but it feels clunky at best as you navigate the streets hurrying to get to the fire.  The truck drives itself, along the streets, something I’d like to see a child be able to do.  Perhaps a similar driving method could be used to the Dr Panda Bus Driver or Dr Panda  game.  I’d also like to see the ability to finish putting out the fire before you exit the building.  As you go to each floor, there is a task it might be rescuing someone, or hitting a hot spot of the fire.  Once that “task” is done the water shuts off and you move on to the next job.  That means that you might exit the fire with it still burning – which can be disappointing to some children. He wanted to be able to go back and finish putting out the fire. My son also asked if he could see the upstairs of the firehouse and things that firefighters do other than just putting out fires like “help people”.

Overall, this is a fun app that takes imaginary play of a fire station to real life.  There are things that I would change to improve the user experience, but the app has solid fundamentals and encourages speech and helping others.  I also used the app to encourage fire safety and talk about what we would do if a real fire happened at our house. It also helps with role playing as your child imagines themselves putting out the fire.

What we love…

Encourages kids to read, teaches history, inspires leadership skills

Summary

I think Flash & Thunder is a great gift, it will appeal mostly to boys but some of the other INVICTA Challenge stories in the pipeline will appeal to both boys and girls. The story is based on a real-life episode during WW2 and whilst playing the child will learn history, get an insight into leadership skills and how tough it can be to make the right decision. I love that there are so many elements to the game- the detailed action figure, studying the mission cards, reading the maps, reading the story, making choices, watching historical videos and playing the video game.A great value for $34.99 !

Flash & Thunder is the first Interactive Game and Graphic Novel from  INVICTA Challenge. INVICTA Challenge is on a mission to engage kids in reading and inspire them through telling stories about real life American heroes.

Flash & Thunder is set during WW2 and tells the story of Turner Turnbull, a Native American paratrooper, and his incredible leadership during D-Day.

When they open the box the player will find a card describing the INVICTA Challenge, an operations packet with 15 mission cards, 2 maps and a detailed posable 6″ action figure.

INVICTA-Challenge_Collectible-figure_LR

INVICTA is Latin for “the unconquered” and an acronym for the 7 pillars of leadership: Integrity, Nobility, Valor, Initiative, Curiosity, Tenacity and Accountability.  The mission of the company is to tell real life leadership stories and inspire kids to become leaders.

The player must study the operations packet and the maps before reading the novel. The mission cards are glossy full color 2 sided cards that cover  a lot of background information. The player learns about the Nazis, the history of WW2 leading up to D-Day and the planned Allied Invasion. They also learn about the troops on both sides that are involved in the story, their gear and weapons, how they fight, as well as  learning about some of the characters they will encounter. As well as color pictures and maps the cards also have copies of historical black and white photos from the time.

As they read the story they need to make decisions that decide the fate of Turner and his men and affect the course of history. They have to take into consideration what they have learned about the enemy, the terrain and the big picture of the invasion plans. Throughout the book they need to make decisions and try to think like a leader as they replay decisions Turnbull and other leaders had to face. Will the mission succeed or fail? That depends on how well they have studied the operations packet. If they make the right decision the story moves forward, if they make the wrong decision they see the consequences of their action and the mission fails, they can then go back a step to make a different choice.

After studying the operations packet and reading the graphic novel they can go online to INVICTAChallenge.com. They have created nearly 30 videos that bring the operations packet to life putting the story in historical perspective and showing video clips from the time. They can also play an interactive video game which is an animated digital version of the graphic novel. The online content will become available in app form soon.

Available from Barnes & Noble, Amazon and the National WW2 Museum.

We donate a portion of our game sales to this scholarship supporting a Choctaw Nation student in his or her 2nd year of college.

My Town: Beach Picnic by My Town Games LTD – Review

What we love…

Virtual playhouse at the beach encouraged creative and interactive play.

What we’d love to see…

building out of the underwater scene to have more play options as well as a reduction in the amount of trash on the beach

Summary

Overall, this is a fun twist on a traditional playhouse theme with a beach scene. It is best enjoyed by preschool through early elementary school and has huge opportunity for growth.

Our Rating

My Town: Beach Picnic by My Town Games LTD is a universal app available for iOS and Android.  In this app, the “town” features a beach scene which includes playing in the sand, playing underwater and having a picnic.   This app targets preschool through early elementary school aged children and the activities can “grow” with your child as you add in the buying of the different buckets or snorkeling in the ocean

There are three mini games embedded in the app:

  • Under the sea – scuba dive below the ocean to look for treasure, see a variety of fish or visit the mermaid.  You get to the bottom of the ocean via a tether that lifts you up and down.
  • Beach area – play in the sand, make a castle using buckets and toys and shower off the sand.  You can also take a swim with some fun beach toys, shop for bathing suits and suba gear or go fishing.  You can also clean up trash from the beach by sorting it into proper containers.
  • Picnic area – prepare a picnic, rest on the beach or buy and eat a popsicle

I love the graphics in this app as well as the fact that you can touch almost any object and it will animate or have some sort of action or sound associated with it.  My son’s favorite part was the underwater play.  He loved floating around underwater and looking around although he did have some great suggestions on improving it.  The graphics were fun and super interactive which engaged my seven year old.  My son loved having the picnic as that’s one of his favorite activities when we go to the beach as a family.

In terms of enhancements, the water scene from the beach where you can pick out the equipment is a bit challenging.  My son found that you couldn’t put it on once you got in the water and you had to remove the character from the water – it seems like you would be able to throw a water ring into the water and float on it.  I also thought that the amount of trash on the beach seemed like more than normal, I wish that could be cut back a little bit.  If My Town: Beach play is looking for differentiation, I would suggest more focus on the underwater segment as that isn’t really an area that other virtual dollhouse type of apps have focused on.  Being able to float around underwater and see things from a in person point of view as well as pick up and examine the creatures more closely would help separate this app from others on the market.  My son especially wanted to look at fish and shells as well as explore the treasure chest more closely. In future editions, it would be nice to be able to disable the links to the other games, or perhaps implement a stronger lock.

Overall, this is a fun twist on a traditional playhouse theme with a beach scene.  My son happily played with the app as he imagined a day at the beach this summer. There are no advertisements or in-app purchases (IAP) contained within the app.  The app does contain links to the other games by My Town Games, but they have a parental lock (simple addition problem) which pulls you through to the app store.

Sago Mini Boats by Sago Sago – Review

iPhone Screenshot 1

What we love…

cute and easy game for little ones

What we’d love to see…

more activities and interactions

Summary

cute app for little ones to venture across the high seas. would love to see a bit more to keep it interesting

Our Rating

Sago Mini BoatsThe new Sago Mini Boats app by Sago Sago is a cute and fun game with a nautical theme, which is perfect for children 2 to 5 years old. Sago Mini apps never disappoint, this one is no different!

Little ones get to choose from five boat adventures, pack their suitcase, choose their boat from eleven choices, and set off on their little adventure! On the high seas, they can pickup some treats, meet some interesting characters, go underwater and cruise along until they meet their best friend.

iPhone Screenshot 2

My three year old loved this app, she was very excited when she first saw it as she loves Sago Mini apps. It is very easy for little hands to use and get around. Options are easy to select and because adventures keep changing every time you go and select one, it’s never a bore.

Her favourite adventures are when she chooses a banana boat or shark boat for Harvey the Dog and sets off to meet his cat friend Jinja, eats lots of ice creams and cupcakes on the way, plays with a pirate fish, gives presents to friends, visits her ice cream vendor friend the octopus, plays with a giant beach ball and dips under water to pick diamonds.

iPhone Screenshot 3

We would love more activities and interactions along the high seas as some areas are very basic. Another option would be if Harvey the dog played with his best friend after he reaches land.

The app has no in-app purchases or third-party advertising which is great. It does have a parents section which is locked by a swipe. There is however a More Apps section which is also guarded by a swipe.

Overall, we loved this cute easy to use app and would recommend it. It is fun and simple to use and as always with Sago Mini apps the characters and graphics are very well designed and don’t disappoint. A few additions would make this app even better.
