Do you enjoy cooking and entertaining but hate being stuck in the kitchen?  It can be frustrating getting the timing right so that your meat is cooked perfectly and not under or overdone. The Kitchen Thermometer by iDevices is a new solution to make your life easier. It uses Bluetooth technology to work with your iPhone or iPad so that you can have your meat cooked perfectly yet be with your guests instead of tied to the kitchen.

I first saw the Kitchen Thermometer at CES in January this year and have been testing it out at home ever since. I love this Kitchen Thermometer ! At first I was just using it when I was roasting big joints of meat, but I keep finding more and more times when it is useful.

idevices3

To use the Kitchen Thermometer you first need to download the free iDevices connected app iDevices Connected – iDevices, LLC. This app also works with other iDevices products such as the iGrill. Install the 2 AA batteries (included) into the thermometer and attach a probe. Insert the end of the probe into your food and place in the oven, the probe’s woven stainless steel cable is flexible enough to allow the oven door to close fully around it. The temperature of the meat will show on the thermometer and also in the app on your iPhone.

With the iPhone app you can select which kind of meat or fish you are cooking and pick a target temperature based on the degree of doneness you like, or you can set your own target temperature. You can also set multiple timers to remind you to start or check different elements of your meal.  You can watch your meats progress on a graph that shows the current probe temperature and the temperature over time.

The app also includes recipe collections from Jennie-O Turkey and Omaha Steaks if you are looking for inspiration. There is also a social sharing option where you are encouraged to share pictures of what you are cooking and see what others have shared (it looks like Mark Zuckerberg enjoys his steak chargrilled!)

The thermometer includes a  magnet so will stick to any magnetic surface. iDevices also include a stick-on metal disc, so you can magnetically attach it to non-magnetic surfaces such as true stainless steel appliances. The probes have a woven stainless steel cable that stores neatly on the included holder when not in use. The Kitchen thermometer comes with 2 color-codes probes that can be used individually or at the same time. The probe holders stack and will attach magnetically to the timer so they stay together in your drawer or kitchen cabinet.

When I am cooking a big meal for guests I often find that I spend a lot of time in the kitchen to make sure everything is timed just right and cooked perfectly. Using the Kitchen Thermometer and the iDevices app really helps my organization and allows me to at least escape from the kitchen some of the time. I love having the multi-timer function, for a big meal I always plan in advance at what time I need to do each step such as putting on different side dishes, making the gravy, and taking out the meat. With this app I can set timers to remind me when I need to start cooking each dish and timers for when to check if they are cooked. With large joints of meat small differences in your oven temperature can really affect the cooking time, so it can be hard to get the timing just right so the meat is perfectly cooked. The Kitchen Thermometer takes the guesswork away- you can watch how the cooking is going at any time by viewing a graph of the food’s current and past temperature, and when it reaches the target temperature an alarm will sound on your iPhone to let you know it is ready.

It is really useful for those big meals, but I’m also finding it useful for everyday cooking as well. I love having two probes, for example when I’m cooking two chicken breasts that are slightly different thickness I can tell when each one is done to perfection, instead of having one done perfectly and the other over or underdone. If I’m cooking more than two at once I use the probes in the smallest 2 pieces of meat first, and then move them to the larger ones once the small ones are finished cooking. I also found the thermometer a lifesaver (or at least a dinner saver)  recently when I was cooking a pot roast in the slow cooker, and a fuse blew in my kitchen circuit. I had no idea how long the meat had been cooking before the power went out, so no idea how much longer to cook it for. I just put the probe into the meat, set it for well done beef ( as I like my pot roast well done) turned the crockpot to high and let the app tell me when to switch to “keep warm”.

I really love the iDevices Kitchen Thermometer and iDevices connected app, it really has made my life easier in the kitchen. One thing I’d love to see added in a future update of the app is the ability to predict when the food will be ready based on the current temperature and cooking profile – that would really be the icing on the cake!

The Kitchen Thermometer is really well designed, and made with high quality materials, so it feels like it will last well. I love the multiple timer function, dual probes, and the ability to monitor the cooking temperature without being stuck in the kitchen. The iDevices Kitchen Thermometer is definitely a permanent fixture in my kitchen!

The iDevices Kitchen Thermometer is available  online from Apple.com, and  iDevices.com  RRP $79.99

Bamba Ice Cream now available in Japanese, Indonesian and Chinese – News

Singapore – Bamba Ice Cream, a popular educational app where children aged two to four pretend to run an ice cream parlor, has been localized for the Japanese, Indonesian and Chinese markets. New ice cream flavors have also been added to reflect each market’s unique local tastes, such as Green Tea, Durian and Red Bean.

In Bamba Ice Cream, children get behind the counter of Bamba Town’s only ice-cream parlor. Here, they can make up various combinations of the popular dessert by choosing different cones, flavours and toppings. Parents or other children can play the role of customer and choose from an ice-cream cone, cup, banana split and more.

Since the release of Bamba Ice Cream, the app topped the charts in Sweden, Taiwan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and broke into the top 40 for Educational iPad apps in the US.

“The markets of Japan, Indonesia and China have great potential for educational apps, more so if the app caters specifically to the local culture.” states John Ng, Co-founder of Mezmedia, the studio behind the Bamba series of children’s apps. “It’s also a big opportunity for us to grow our existing user base into more non-English speaking markets.”

“A lot of research has gone into identifying popular ice cream flavours of each particular region. We hope parents and kids will appreciate the attention to detail we’ve put in for each new flavour.”

Bamba Ice Cream is available only on the iPad. All four language versions – English, Japanese, Indonesian and Simplified Chinese – are available globally.

Summary

Bamba Pizza will allow children to showcase their creativity by making an almost endless assortment of pizzas from the classic to the kooky and also encourages group play which in turn will strengthen their roleplaying and social skills. Sure to become a hit at your place!

Our Rating

4.5 out of 5 stars!

My kids are big pizza-making fans but it’s a “sometimes” food in our house so they rarely get to make it. Imagine their excitement when I introduced them to Bamba Pizza, where they get to run their very own classic pizza parlour and make endless pizza! Singapore-based Mezmedia (Facebook | Twitter) are well known for their high-quality, professional apps, like Bamba Ice Cream, and they certainly don’t disappoint with Bamba Pizza.

Upon opening the iPad-only app, the splash screen featuring the bright and bubbly Bamba logo is displayed along with a soundtrack of lovely upbeat trumpet music and you’re then moved on to the old-style shopfront where you’re ready to get down to business – simply tap the door to enter the store. Here is where you get to choose your customer from four characters. Will you impress Francois the robot chef with your pizza masterpiece? (I have a sneaking suspicion that Sammy the Sasquatch isn’t too fussy about what goes on his pizza). Once you have chosen a character, the next job is to roll the dough for the pizza base. Tapping the rolling pin and sliding your finger in the direction you want to go will flatten the dough and then it’s time to show off your cooking expertise by tossing the dough just like they do in an authentic Italian pizzeria. A word of warning here – make sure children know to toss it lightly and not to throw the iPad across the room in the process (yes, I’m speaking from experience!!).

Once your dough is ready to go, add the sauce by lathering it on to cover the base and then it’s time for toppings and boy are there a few… 36 to be exact! You can create a sensible pizza with salami and pineapple or a silly pizza with choc chip cookies and batwings plus many, many more. You’re limited to five of each topping but you can add any assortment you like however once the toppings are on the pizza, you can’t move them around or remove them. When you’re done creating your pizza, just tap the green tick at the bottom left and it’s time to cook it in the oven.Tap the timer, wait for the *ding*, slice up the pizza by following the guiding line with your finger and you’re ready to serve. I’m not sure if it’s just me but I seem to have endless difficulty slicing the pizza diagonally! To serve the pizza to your customer, you must drag a piece to their mouth and they will then let you know what they think of your creation with either an approving smile and a lick of the lips or with a furrowed brow and grimace. Each character responds to the food in their own way so to keep the game interesting, children are encouraged to try different toppings to see what type of reaction they can gauge.

Bamba Pizza will allow children to showcase their creativity by making an almost endless assortment of pizzas from the classic to the kooky and also encourages group play which in turn will strengthen their roleplaying and social skills. I would have liked to have seen some sort of payment feature like in Bamba Ice Cream but the absence of this does not detract from the essence of the app at all, it just would have been a nice, realistic addition. The app is targeted at children 2-4 and I agree with this recommendation as it is easily navigable by this age bracket and contains no confusing instructions or settings and does not include any in-app purchases or advertising. The colours in this app are amazing and the graphics are playful and fun with great attention to detail. If you have a mini-Masterchef in your house, this app would be a great addition for them to practice their culinary skills! This app has become a big favourite of my kids (OK, and me too) and we can’t wait to see Bamba Post Office when it’s released this year.

Cake Doodle by Shoe the Goose – Review

Reviewed by Alison

Cake DoodleCake Doodle by Shoe the Goose is a virtual cake decorating shop. From cracking eggs, sifting in flour, pinching in orange juice, to measuring out vanilla this app will have your child learning how to cook using a recipe. Once all the ingredients are in the bowl, blend the batter and put it into the oven to bake. If you are in a hurry, you can do a cake mix as well! Once the cake comes out of the oven, the real fun begins. After icing the cake in any variety of colors, you can decorate with fancy tips, pre-made toppers and decorations as well as put your own photos on the cake. The app has fourteen different cake recipes and eighteen different cake styles – so you can experiment with the different varieties of cakes. After finishing the design, you can save the photo to your album and eat it using your magical finger. This app works on measuring, fine motor skills such as grating, sifting and pinching, creative thinking related to designing the cake and more!

This was one of the first apps we got for our iPad – my son has spent hours making a variety of virtual cakes for us! The recipes for the cake allow your child to understand the cooking process and my son actually understands now how to bake in the kitchen – which we now do together. He recently had a birthday and helped me to design his favorite cake on the iPad before making it together in real life. We have sent off several photos of our cakes to family and friends as a virtual “birthday gift” when we can’t be there for their special day.

In terms of an enhancement, I would like to see the ability to make your own recipe – with all of the virtual items in a cupboard allowing you to pick and choose based on your own tastes. I would also like to see the completed cakes have a splash of color to them when they are cooked or be able to see the blueberries peek through the golden brown color after it has baked. I’d also like the option to make the frosting while the cake is baking, allowing for that additional level of interactivity while waiting for the cake to bake.

This app is one of the most played on our iPad – and is a bargain at only $0.99. Try it – and be prepared to watch your child become immersed in the world of cakes. Other apps by this developer include: Cookie Doodle, Jelly Doodle, Tie Dye Doodle just to name a few! This is even an app I’ve caught myself playing a few times since I enjoy decorating cakes and it is a nice way to practice visual layout before making the actual cake!

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her two sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
