Mussila – Musical monster adventure by Rosamosi ehf. – Review

What we love…

fun interactive music making app that uses repetition and skill building to help kids successfully complete levels and enhance their musical knowledge as well as build on listening and attention skills.

What we’d love to see…

ability to play the app both in portrait and landscape mode, have the sounds played on the instruments replayed for a second chance to listen

Summary

Beautiful app designed to help kids understand the fundamentals of music in a non stressful way that teaches using a skill building method.  My son, who has only had experience to music via listening to it and at school loved this app!  He’s looking forward to trying out a real instrument as he gets older.  Amazing amount of content included in the app to help children learn music theory making this a comprehensive app.

Our Rating

Mussila - Musical monster adventure | Notes | Piano | Rhythm | MelodyMussila – Musical monster adventure by Rosamosi ehf is a universal app for iOS featuring a variety of musical monsters who teach you about the basics of music while on an interactive journey to find their costumes and instruments.  As you journey through the different lessons which include: listening to identify a specific instrument, defining rhythms and melodies you are moved up in each lesson.  You fly from lesson to lesson for a total of 64 different lessons each of which focuses on a specific concept.  If you take too long to answer, the monster gives you a clue and helps you to answer correctly – a timer appears on the lower levels during instrument identification and you can earn new instruments or costumes  as you complete the levels successfully. As you complete the levels you can earn stars which help you earn costumes and instruments by being “tested” to see what you have learned in the previous levels.  The app targets elementary aged children from about age 6 through 11 using an interactive learning style that shows children how the music is made or what the objective is before giving them more lessons and testing.  The app features 12 different instruments each of which is repeated throughout to help children become more familiar with them.

One of my son’s favorite parts of the game was copying the music that was being played and playing it via the on screen piano.  He also got quite a bit better at discerning rhythms and the various instruments as he moved up in levels of the app.  I was surprised at how quickly he picked up the music and sounds of the instruments – some of which he hadn’t heard before.  I also liked that it was progressive and if my son struggled with a specific level he was able to go back and play it over again.  The app also saw when he struggled with a specific section like the rhythm and didn’t make him upset that he didn’t know it – he just went back and listened again.  He also liked earning costumes and prizes including instruments that he could dress the monsters in.  I also liked that you could do a level and then go back to the app without feeling like you had to sit and play with it for hours – it was fun and could be broken down into bite size pieces which encouraged kids to learn in their own fashion.

iPad Screenshot 2

In terms of enhancements, I do wish the app worked in both portrait and landscape modes just to give kids a bit more space on the screen. During the rhythm section, it would be nice if you could go back and “replay” the rhythm on the instruments just in case you wanted to hear it again.  I would also like to see a multi-player option so if you had multiple children they could each have their own customized content.

This is a great app to help introduce kids to music and help them understand the various sounds that instruments make.  My son learned a lot in this app and enjoyed listening to the various instruments and working on identifying them as well as playing them during the interactive jam sessions.  There are no ads or in-app purchases.   It is a fun app for teaching not only music appreciation, but to help with listening skills.  Beautiful app designed to help kids understand the fundamentals of music in a non stressful way that teaches using a skill building method.  My son, who has only had experience to music via listening to it and at school loved this app!  He’s looking forward to trying out a real instrument as he gets older.  The app is priced a bit on the higher side $5.99 USD but for the amount of content it provides (65 lessons) it is a bargain!  It is not an app that you will pick up and play for a few times, but one that kids will engage with over and over again especially if they are new to learning about music.

Peppa Pig: Golden Boots by Entertainment One – Review and Giveaway

image

Grab this app if you have Peppa Pig fans at home! Not fans yet? Get it all the same if you have preschoolers! Peppa Pig : Golden Boots the app is just too fun (and educational) for your kids to miss out on! My youngest was very excited to play the app, peeping over my shoulder when I was checking it out and eventually taking over the iPad from me!

What we love…

Being able to play with Peppa Pig and her friends in their favorite games!

What we’d love to see…

More activities, the more the better.

Summary

This is a fun preschool educational game app featuring Peppa Pig characters that all kids will enjoy playing over and over again.

Since this app has been created in celebration of Peppa Pig’s first extended episode “The Golden Boots”, you naturally get to watch parts of the episode in the app. It opens with the familiar introduction to Peppa’s family that you see in all of their episodes. Then your child is invited to enter the play area and choose a favorite balloon as his/her profile icon. Up to 4 kids can create their own profiles and there is no need to key in names. Everything is easy for kids to manage by themselves.

As all fans know, the first rule of muddy puddle jumping is that you must wear your boots. In this episode, Peppa proudly shows off her special yellow boots that is made of ‘real plastic gold’, much to Suzy Sheep’s displeasure. While Peppa and her friends are indoors for orange juice, Mrs Duck comes along and walks off with Peppa’s golden boots. And so the quest to find Peppa’s golden boots begins.

First, kids are asked to make Peppa a new pair of boots for her day of adventures, using different color paints, patterns and stickers. Then they get to complete Peppa’s look with various outfits, head gears and a toy to hold. When Peppa is all set, kids can choose to play in one of the following 6 adventures:-

Dressing up Peppa! Kids will love to dress Peppa and see her appearing throughout the app in the look that they have created for her.

Find what’s hiding in the mud! Kids can wipe or tap around the muddy puddle to explore and find something hiding in the mud. But the highlight here is definitely making a Peppa Pig character jump in the mud.

Fly a rocket through space! This activity is the most challenging of the 6 games. Great eye tracking skills and hand eye coordination are needed to control the rocket through space following the path of stars while avoiding planets and collecting stars. There are 3 levels of play to cater to different abilities.

Shop at Miss Rabbit’s gift shop on the moon! Kids have to use their observation skills to help Peppa, George and Suzy search for the items requested and count them when the job is done.

Help Peppa make food and feed the ducks! This activity provides lots of opportunities for kids to exercise their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination – dragging, pouring and stirring ingredients, cutting the duck feed to smaller portions and dragging or flicking the food to the moving ducks. Kids will enjoy experimenting with different combinations of ingredients and see what happens to the food.

image

Sing along to the Muddy Puddles Song! The video is short but fun nonetheless.

image

Throughout the app, Peppa’s golden boots will appear and kids will have to quickly catch them in order to earn presents. They can play with their unwrapped presents anytime from their toy basket on the games menu.

image

Peppa Pig: Golden Boots is a lot of fun and giggles with games, animations and videos to educate and entertain. The activities are age appropriate and beneficial for kids’ cognitive development. There are also many opportunities for them to make decisions. This is an app that is easy and safe for preschoolers to navigate by themselves.

To all my fellow parents with young Peppa Pig fans, I say this app is a much better (and cheaper) buy than all the expensive Peppa Pig merchandise that we have been buying, so just get it already!

Bamba Space Station by Mezmedia – Review & Giveaway

iPad Screenshot 3

What we love…

fun interactive space themed app that encourage kids to explore and create

What we’d love to see…

a toolbox to store our objects and creations, plates for food and the ability to re-display instructions

Summary

Fun space themed app that encourages kids to “play with no rules” and be creative.  My son loved crafting and creating objects within the rooms.

Our Rating

Bamba Space StationBamba Space Station by Bamba is a universal space themed app for iOS.  This pretend play app features a space station in a far away galaxy.  Children can choose from seven different characters, eleven different rooms, and a variety of different mini games.  There are costumes on the characters that you can change, creating new items and much more.  The app has a variety of different rooms and overall is very interactive.  Almost everything we touched had either a motion, object that you could make or a noise attached to it which encouraged my seven-year-old to explore more.  That had lots of fun objects to play with including costume changes, balloons, sand, sand toys as well as tasty snacks.  After you finish each scene, the characters skitter to the next one.   As you complete more levels, new characters come as do new costumes and activities.  When you are done, you can go back to the main screen – hit “recycle” and everything will go back to the way it was before you started playing.   Be sure to check out some of our other Bamba app reviews including: Bamba Toys, Bamba Pizza, and Bamba Burger.

My son and I loved the graphics in the app as well as creating new objects.  It was a fun hunt in the app to find all of them.  When you switch rooms within the app a set of instructions are given to complete a task in graphical format which makes it a great app for preschool through early elementary school.  The tasks were engaging – and the instructions easy to follow.  My son loved the kitchen where he experimented with a variety of ice creams, and coffee combinations.  He also enjoyed making pancakes complete with maple syrup.  After the scene is completed, you can take a photo which is saved on your camera roll and then have a dance party where all the loose objects float around.   After you are done the magic vacuum sucks any lose objects up.  My son also really enjoyed the costumes and giving the characters a nap and clothing change.  There were so many fun interactive elements that each time we played it seems like we are discovering something new.    His favorite room by far was the pool area and treasure chest.  We loved seeing the characters’ expressions when they tried some of our food combinations as well as watching them dance on the screen.  I only wish I had the magic space vacuum to clean up after his toys at home!

In terms of enhancements’, he asked me why there were no plates in the kitchen since we use plates.  He also wanted a spot to put down the tools (without losing them – like a toolbox) so that he could fully interact with each of the scenes.  Right now they carry the items from scene to scene so he had to put them down and pick them up each time.  It would also be nice if you could show the “instructions” page multiple times – we had to exit and re-open the app in order for that to happen.

There are no in-app purchases or external advertisements.  The app does have an advertisement for other Bamba apps but it parental gate locked with a math problem.

Overall, this is a fun and interactive spaced themed app that encourages kids to play and be creative.  My son has already spent several hours testing out the various objects and showing me his “creations!” The reset feature is great as well especially if you have multiple kids playing and they want “my turn!”.

Kensington Hi-Fi Headphones with Mic – Review

KensingtonHeadphoneswith mic

Summary

Priced at under $25 they are a great value. Their grown-up styling will be popular with kids who have outgrown cute character headphones.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

If you are looking for headphones for your children for school or home use Kensington’s new Hi-Fi Headphones with Mic are a great option and good value for money too.

Over the last few years my childrens’ schools have been incorporating more technology into the curriculum and even their State testing is transitioning to being done on the computer instead of with pencil and paper. Because of this parents need to provide their kids with headphones for use during computer or tablet time at school. My kids also use headphones when using the computer or tablet at home so they can work simultaneously without disturbing each other. With 3 kids needing them for both home and school we get through a lot of headphones !

When looking for headphones for my kids there are a number of features that are important to me: clear sound, comfortable, fit a range of head sizes, sound limited to a safe level and they must be tough and durable.

I recently had the opportunity to test out Kensington’s new Headphones With Mic that they have designed specifically for students in K-12. The first thing I noticed as they don’t look like kids headphones, although they are designed for kids they look very much like an adult headphone. My kids are 8, 8 and 12 and will shun anything they consider “too babyish” and all 3 approved of this design.

They have a wide black headband that is padded at the top and when you expand it shows a silver metal band at the sides. My 8 year-old daughter has a small head for her age and my 12 year-old son’s head is on the large side and the headphones fit both of them comfortably.

The headphones have 40mm drivers and I found the sound quality very good for a sub- $30 headphone – the sound was clear and crisp with a good dynamic range. The maximum sound level is 94db, which gives me peace of mind as they can’t turn the sound to unsafe levels.

The microphone is a nice bonus feature and very useful for using apps with dictation and voice recognition. This is especially important for kids who have difficulty typing. I like the flexible microphone stalk and how it rotates out of the way when not in use.

My kids (especially the younger boy) are tough on headphones but these feel well-made and durable so I am confident they will last him a good while. The cord is 9 foot long, rubberized and flexible and it has a gold-plated jack. The cord comes coiled up and we keep it that way most of the time, but it is nice to have the extra length for times we need it. The one thing I would like to see added is an attached velcro cord tidy for keeping the cord neat instead of the current wire tie.

Overall, I think these are a great kids headphone, they are well made, durable, have good sound quality, will fit a variety of head sizes and are a great choice both for home and school use. Priced at under $25 they are a great value. Their grown-up styling will be popular with kids who have outgrown cute character headphones. They are popular with my kids and are my 8 year old son’s favorite headphones.

Kensington Hi-Fi Headphones with Mic (SRP $24.99) are available from Kensington.com, Amazon and other retailers.
