Have you ever bought a dock for your Smartphone or tablet, but when you later upgrade your device your dock isn’t compatible with your new device and sits unused in a drawer?  FŪZ Designs aims to put an end to that with the EverDock, which is designed to be used with any smartphone or tablet. The EverDock was launched via a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, and is now available for purchase.

It is a very simple, yet elegant solution- a solid block of machined aluminum, with a micro-suction base that keeps the dock firmly in place. It comes with a micro-USB cable and is also compatible with Apple 30 pin and lightning cables (which you need to supply yourself). The secret to its versatility is that it is designed to easily allow you to change cables so you can update it with your own charging cable for whatever is the latest and greatest tablet or smartphone.

Setting it up is simple – first you peel away the protective plastic from the base – this reveals a channel in the base and a hole that leads to the top of the dock. Inside the hole is the cable adapter which you remove. Thread the cable through the hole and through the cable adapter, then put the adapter back in place. You don’t need to use the adapter with the Apple 30 pin cable, with other cables it is used to hold the charging tip firmly in place. Next you push the cable into the channel, where small teeth cover it, to keep it in place. Turn over the dock and install one of the silicone dock bumpers if needed. The EverDock comes with 2 different thickness bumpers- use the thickest if no case, the thinner one for a thin case and no bumper for a thick case. The bumpers can be installed and removed quickly if you use the dock with 2 devices that have different cases.

The EverDock is surprisingly stable – the weight of the aluminum base plus the micro-suction keep it very stable even with an iPad on it. The EverDock comes in 4 color choices- silver, gold, black and  space grey.  I reviewed the silver – which fits in really well with my Apple products and looks simple and elegant on a desktop. The  EverDock is not a charger – it is designed to work with your device’s own charger and cable to turn it into a simple elegant stand and charging dock. Because it utilizes your device’s charger and cable it can continue to be used even if you change to a new smartphone or tablet.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a simple way to turn your smartphone or tablet’s charger and cable into an elegant desktop charging dock this is a great option. The machined aluminum base looks stylish, and its weight plus the micro-suction base provide a surprisingly stable dock in a small footprint.

News: White the App Inspired by The Theatre Production is Released – FREE until the end of March

Into the World of White

Imagine a world without colour, where the sky, the trees and the grass are all as white as cotton. It’s a beautifully strange world where eggs fall from the sky to be looked after by two funny little men in knitted bobble-hats. Welcome to the world of White, Catherine Wheels Theatre Company’s smash-hit show for children aged two to four, currently touring to Beverley Hills, California from their home base in Scotland.

The show has now inspired the world’s first theatrical app for very young children, created by Hippotrix, an app developer based in East Lothian Scotland in partnership with Catherine Wheels. The iOS app takes babies and toddlers inside the performance to catch and care for the eggs, and enjoy a riotous party.

 iPhone Screenshot 1

Creator of White, Andy Manley, said: “The production has been an amazing success, and has toured all over the world. But we thought an app would be a great way to sprinkle a little bit of White’s magic even more widely, so kids who can’t get to see a live performance can still take part.”

Hippotrix Producer Simone Bloomfield noted: “It was vital for us to preserve the award-winning designs for the show, along with Andy’s terrific story, so the objects in our app are the actual set and props. We really wanted to help children explore themes like friendship and caring so there are no bouncy cartoon characters – instead, children can recreate their favourite moments from White, and maybe take them further.”

Creating a mobile and tablet product for the very young was not without its challenges. Researcher Ben Fletcher-Watson explained: “We analysed the interactions used in a number of Early Years products to find the optimum set-up for very young children. For example, there are no complex tasks that require delicate motor skills, like pinching or multi-finger swipe. Too many apps don’t consider the needs of their users carefully, and we wanted to ensure that the very youngest children could still get the most out of the experience.”

Hippotrix will be releasing more children’s theatre apps in the coming months. White The App can be found in Apple’s App Store,  and is free while the show is on in Hollywood at the Wallis Theatre until the end of March.

Avokiddo ABC Ride by Avokiddo – Review

What we love…

engaging, bright colorful animations that help children practice their ABC’s in a fun and interactive way

What we’d love to see…

Tracking in the parent dashboard for areas of improvement

Summary

Top notch ABC app that also teaches spelling and phonics in a fun and engaging way

Our Rating

Avokiddo ABC Ride by Avokiddo is a universal app for iOS designed to help your children learn their ABC’s in a fun and interactive way with Beck and Bo. This app allows your children to ride a bike along a path and for each letter there is a “stop” where they learn and practice a specific letter while having trying out each letter in a way that helps them remember. The app not only practices letters, it also includes spelling practice, a game along with each letter along with interactions which help children remember each letter and familiarize them with a specific word to remember it. This app practices expressive and receptive language, spelling, fine motor skills including dragging, gripping and pinching.

My son loved the magnet and spelling out the various words in the app – I liked that he could put the letters on in whatever way he wanted to as long as they were correct, however, it would be nice to see a setting that requires the letters to be put on in sequential order. The app allows for exploration and pairing of words that begin with the appropriate letter, through a game like setting that encourages children to play while learning which is an outstanding way to engage and teach. I also liked that the app taught phonetic sounds as well as the ability to sound words out – this encourages early literacy and pre-reading skills among the youngest children and encourages them to pair sounds with specific letters.

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see the ability to “turn off” the additional apps button in the parent dashboard. Even though it is child locked, my son asked why we couldn’t get the other apps. I would also like to see a percentage correct when the spelling activity is done as well as some basic reporting available in the parent area as well.

This is one of our favorite ABC apps today and provides great educational content and activities for children that engage and teach at the same time.

Max on the farm pro by Andras Szabo -Review

What we love…

Child-friendly features and good mix of educational games for preschoolers.

What we’d love to see…

A bonus game in place of the present sticker activity as rewards.

Summary

An enjoyable collection of preschool learning games for the farm-loving kid.

Our Rating

Max on the farm pro is a collection of 4 farm-themed games for children aged 3-6. It is a totally child-safe and child-friendly app with no instructions or set-up required. Kids just need to launch the app and they can start playing right away. The only option available for parents is to turn off the music.

20140321-000044.jpg
There are 4 games in this app and they are played in an endless loop of progressive difficulty levels of play. There is no end to each game, once the player reaches the highest level, the game automatically returns to the first level. With many levels included for each game, you can expect your kids to be kept occupied and learning for some time.

20140321-000118.jpg

Find the items
Set in a tree house, children’s visual discrimination skills will be at work while they look for 30 hidden items in 10 slightly different set-ups.

20140321-000143.jpg

Patterns
From the simple AAAAA to the complex AABCAABC pattern, there are 45 different patterns for your kids to solve. Pattern recognizing is made more difficult here, with 2 missing objects instead of the usual 1 and the missing objects are not necessarily placed at the end of the sequence.

20140321-000208.jpg

Matching
Players are to place 3 different vegetables, letters, numbers or patterns in their matching wagon in each level. There are a total of 17 levels with 57 different combinations of objects to match.

20140321-000227.jpg

Puzzles
There are 13 puzzles of farm animals (plus one of the barn) to solve. Puzzles are not too difficult to complete and the pieces snap together easily.

20140321-000234.jpg

Completion of each level is applauded and rewards come in the form of a sticker activity which resets itself when you closes the app. Perhaps another type of rewards can be considered e.g. a bonus game.

With child-friendly features, attractive design and valuable educational content, Max on the farm is a good choice of preschool learning app. If your kids love all things related to the farm, then they are in for a treat because this app is FREE for App Friday, Mar 21!! Download today and enjoy!
