Spelling HangmanLooking for an app that will help your child with spelling homework and tests?   This app is a fun way that allows parents to enter and record spelling words and enables children to learn by playing hangman.  Children have to enter the letters for the word in the correct order, but if they make a mistake, then a hangman will appear.  There’s a “sneak” peek button which allows them to see a word – but it adds to the hangman!

What we love…

What we’d love to see…

Summary

A delightful interactive book app, with an important message as part of the story. It teaches children ways better care for our planet, and also that they can be part of the solution, but delivers it in a subtle way .Highly recommended!

Our Rating

Vincent the Anteater´s Space VoyageVincent the Anteater´s Space Voyage is an adorable universal app from El Pudu Studios. It can be read in 10 different languages including English, Spanish and French. Vincent is created from felt and all the other characters and scenes are also created from fabric. It is an interactive adventure that subtly teaches children about ecology whilst they enjoy an interactive story. The app is child-friendly with no external links, in-app purchases or adverts. The app has optional narration in English, which is well-done, but no word highlighting as it is read. It is enhanced with animation, nice background music and realistic sound effects.

Vincent the Anteater lives in the forest with his fellow anteaters and a wise old Armadillo called Peter. Vincent is a science-minded Anteater and his friend Peter teaches him all about nature with his powerful magnifying glass. Vincent loves to eat ants- all kinds of ants, but his absolute favorite are Green Hairy Ants. One day he discovers there are no Green Hairy Ants, so he asks his friends what to do. The other anteaters think dancing to the Great Cosmic Anteater will solve the problem, but Peter the Armadillo is worried and advises Vincent to fly into space to ask the Great Cosmic Anteater what to do about the missing ants. Vincent builds a rocket to fly to the sky.

20140312-112008.jpg

As Vincent through space he lands on 9 different planets, and the reader can choose which order he visits them. On each planet Vincent encounter a different problem, the reader can help Vincent solve the problem and at the same time learn about keeping ourselves and our planet healthy.

20140312-111820.jpg

Vincent finally reaches the Great Cosmic Anteater and finds she is not what he expected, and can not tell him the answer to his problem. Vincent returns home and realizes that he can solve the problem of the missing Green Hairy Ants himself.

I really love this book app – it has a lovely retro, hand-crafted feel about it. Every page has interactive elements for the reader to find- and they are very much part of the story, such as helping Vincent slurp ants up with his long tongue and helping him build his rocket and solve problems on the different planets. If the reader can’t find the interactions hints appear to help. Vincent is a likable character and it is fun to explore different planets with him, and help him to make them better and more eco-friendly. The book app can be enjoyed at two different levels -younger readers will enjoy reading or listening to the story and older ones can tap on the text box to learn more about the various ecological issues. There are a few changes I would like to see in a future update- I would love to see bookmarking, a page navigation option, narration added in more languages, word highlighting and the ability to delay the interactive elements until after the narration is completed.

20140312-112041.jpg

Overall this is a delightful interactive book app. I love its handcrafted, retro feel and the interactions, sound effects and animations that bring the story to life. This story has an important message: it teaches children ways better care for our planet, and also that they can be part of the solution, but delivers it in a subtle way. It also gives an opportunity for older children to learn more about ecology and the message behind the story. Highly recommended!

4-in-1 iPhone Lens and Quick-Flip Case by Olloclip – Review- A Great Package for iPhoneographers!

4-in-1 iPhone Lens and Quick-Flip Case by Olloclip – Review- A Great Package for iPhoneographers!

olloclip 4 in 1

Bottom line…

The Olloclip 4-in-1 is an incredibly small, convenient, high quality, portable, easy to use, lens system that gives added versatility to the iPhone’s photographic capabilities. It is a good deal at $70 and is highly recommended.

The Quick-Flip Case is a useful extra accessory for those who, like myself, prefer to have their iPhone in a case whilst in use. I would love to see it offer more protection, and I did feel it was a bit pricey at $50.

The Olloclip 4-in-1 is a quick-connect lens solution for the budding iPhoneographer. It is a simple, slip-on solution that allows you to take iPhone photographs using a Fisheye, Wide-Angle and 2 Macro lenses.

To use the Olloclip 4-in-1, the upper right corner of your iPhone needs to be uncovered. The Quick-Flip Case makes it easy to expose that corner whilst protecting the rest of the phone, and also adds additional functionality. I tested the 4-in-1 and Quick Flip Case with an iPhone 5, on a recent trip to Hawaii, and I will share some of the photos I took with it. The version I tested can be used with the iPhone5/5s/5c or iPod Touch 5th generation, an iPhone 4/4s version is also available.

The lens system is incredibly small and comes in a microfiber drawstring bag, which is easy to keep in a handbag or pocket. It slips easily onto the corner of your iPhone, over the iPhone camera lens. There are 2 sides to the system- one side contains the Fisheye 180 lens, the other has a Wide-Angle lens, you can rapidly switch between them by sliding off the lens system, flipping it and sliding back on. Unscrewing the Wide-Angle lens reveals a 10x Macro lens, and underneath the Fish-Eye lens is a 15x Macro. When using the Macro lenses I recommended unscrewing both Wide-Angle and Fisheye and keeping them in the drawstring bag, then you can easily flip between the 2 Macros to get the image you want. Cleverly the Fisheye and Wide-Angle lenses have slightly different threads, so you can’t accidentally put them back in the wrong place.

iPhone_4-in-1_lens-3b

The 10x Macro has a 18mm focus distance and the 15x has a 12mm focus distance, so they are designed for very close up photography – such as details of a leaf,  pictures of tiny flowers, or details of a surface. You need to be very close for the 15x Macro, so camera shake can be an issue here, especially for plant pictures outdoors, where the plant may also be moving in the wind. Using a tripod with the Quick-Flip case can be useful to overcome this issue.

The Fisheye lens creates some very fun effects. Here is a picture I took of Hawaiian Petroglyphs using the Fisheye:

The Wide-angle lens is the one I’ve used the least, as the iPhone lens has a pretty wide angle to start with. However, there are some situations where it is very useful such as taking a photo of a large group of people, or getting in the full height of a tall building. It roughly doubles the field of view of the iPhone. The lenses are made from high quality precision ground coated glass and the barrels are aircraft-grade anodized aluminum. They look well-made, and the photographs come out clear and sharp.

The Quick-Flip Case is made of hard plastic and covers the back, sides and corners of the iPhone, with cutouts over all buttons and ports. When you are using it with your Olloclip lens the top of the case flips over, leaving the right hand corner of the iPhone free so you can easily slip on the lens system. The edge of the flipped case also acts as a trigger so you can use this to depresses the + volume button which will take the photo. The case comes with a “Pro-Photo Adapter” which has a tripod mount and a cold-shoe mount for a light or microphone, and with an adapter to allow it to be used with a 5th generation iPod Touch.

olloclip caseThe Quick-Flip Case is less protective than my usual everyday case, but for days when I was planning to do some iPhoneography it was a great compromise in allowing easy access to put on the lens system, yet still giving the protection of being in a case. I did occasionally have difficulty getting the trigger to deploy. The case doesn’t have a screen protector so I used a Cloak by Tylt  stick-on screen protector. It is a pretty thick screen protector  and I found the lens system did not slip easily over it (which it did with a bare screen), so I needed to cut a window in the screen protector where the lens went on.

I found the lens system very easy to use and it produced high quality images. The drawstring back was very useful for storing the lenses and also doubled as a lens cloth when I accidentally got fingerprints on the lenses! I would caution to be careful using a thick screen protector on the iPhone with the 4-in-1 as you may need to cut a hole in the screen protector. Without a screen protector the lens slides on easily, and stays in place well. The lens does cover the sleep/wake button but you can just lift the corner slightly to access this if you wish to leave the lens on between photography sessions. It also partly covers the flash, but this isn’t a big issue for me as I’m not usually using the flash and the 4-in-1 at the same time.

Overall, the Olloclip 4-in-1 is an incredibly small, convenient, high quality, portable, easy to use, lens system that gives added versatility to the iPhone’s photographic capabilities. It is a good deal at $70 and is highly recommended. The Quick-Flip Case is a useful extra accessory for those who, like myself, prefer to have their iPhone in a case whilst in use. I really like having a case that works with the Olloclip lenses, but I would love to see it offer more protection, and I did feel it was a bit pricey at $50.

The 4-in-1 retails for $69.99 and the Quick-Flip Case retails for $49.99 both are available online from olloclip.com and Amazon.

What we love…

app learned your child’s skills and got progressively harder as their skills improved, multiplayer functionality, bright colors and fun to manipulate

What we’d love to see…

Instructions on completing step by step; little more seamless moving of the backgrounds

Summary

Bottom line – this is much more than your simple object sorting game.  It will grow with your child and get progressively harder as their skills improve.  Even as a parent I enjoyed playing with the app and getting objects into the right spots.

Our Rating

Busy Shapes by Seven Academy is an app designed for iOS that focuses on motor skills, matching, critical thinking and more.  This app designed for preschool through early elementary aged children requires them to manipulate an object into the correct hole using fingers, tools and other manipulative while getting progressively harder to ensure their skills are properly tested.  The app teaches shapes, colors, matching of objects and putting them in a appropriately shaped hole.   The app tracks how long it takes to complete a level and then increases or decreases the difficulty of the next level.  The game provides visual and sound based “awards” for correctly putting objects into the proper holes.

iPad Screenshot 2

I loved how the app “learned” as your child completed the various puzzles and got progressively harder.  There are a number of objects which can also make it harder to move objects from spills on the floor – to the use of a block to move objects which make the app fun for even older children (and parents!)  The app allows for multiplayer profiles and up to 40 profiles which makes it perfect for use in a classroom or even by an occupational therapist.  I also liked seeing the goals met such as the “sticky puddle” avoiding an object, hidden shapes, tools and moving shapes.  It made it easier to see which areas my son might have struggled with and helped me to work with him.  I also really liked that the app required critical thinking such as the moving of barriers, maneuvering around objects, and kept my son’s attention while playing with the app and having him learn. It is designed for children aged 2 to 5 although I think that the skills practiced can go much higher than that. We tested it on an iPad Mini and liked the larger screen size although it works well on an iPhone as well.

In terms of enhancements, I did sometimes see a flicker when the “slides” or backgrounds changed – although my son didn’t comment about it.  I would also like to see the opportunity to have directions presented such as “find the yellow square” or step by step instructions on putting objects in order into the holes.

There are no external links, in-app purchases, social media contained within the app.  The app does contain a parent locked section which requires a multiplication problem to be completed to enter.  Bottom line – this is much more than your simple object sorting game.  It will grow with your child and get progressively harder as their skills improve.  Even as a parent I enjoyed playing with the app and getting objects into the right spots.   This is a great app for parents of preschoolers, early elementary aged children as well as those working on fine motor skills to help ensure mastery. My kindergartener kept asking for more – which is very high praise indeed.
