Sago Mini Monsters By Sago Sago Review

Bottom Line …

Simple, easy creative play for young children. This is a great app for young kids- it is really simple and intuitive to use. Toddlers and preschoolers can use it easily even if they are only just starting to be able to draw simple lines or dots. The kids love how the monsters come to life and love seeing their reaction to the various foods foods.

Our Rating

Sago Mini MonstersSago Mini Monsters is the newest app from Sago Sago. The Toronto, Canada based app developer Sago Sago is a sister company to the famous Swedish children’s app developer Toca Boca, but has its own unique style. The app is designed for toddlers and preschoolers, and is simple to use and child friendly. It has a parental section with advice on using the app, and there is a “Sago News section” with links to other apps. Both of these are protected by parental gates and they can both be hidden in iPad settings.

The action takes place in a green, oozing, bubbling swamp – suddenly the top of a head pops up from the slime. The child drags it up from the swamp and they can begin to create their own lovable monster.

They can draw on their monster to decorate it- there are 5 colors to choose from. The tools are very simple for young children, just tap on the color then draw. They don’t have to worry about going outside the lines as the app automatically keeps all the drawing inside the the lines. Once they’ve finished decorating their monster tapping the check mark will make him spring to life as his eyes, mouth and horns appear. If they don’t like them no problem – just pull them off and the monster will grow a new mouth, eye or horn.

Once the child is happy with their monster, food appears in the swamp and they can pull it out to feed him, he’ll happily eat whatever you give him whether it is birthday cake, garlic or even old boots. He’ll give appreciative noises when he’s fed, and be sad if you throw away his food.

When he’s full he lets out a big burp and a giant toothbrush appears to remind the child its time to brush his teeth. Once his teeth are sparkling clean again it’s time to get him looking his best- accessories appear from the swamp and your child can choose their favorites to decorate him. Accessories include flowers, bows, hats and even bandaids! After all the fun making and playing with their monster the child can take a picture to remember him by. The monster goes back to the swamp and the child can make a new monster friend if they like.

This is a great app for young kids- it is really simple and intuitive to use. Toddlers and preschoolers can use it easily even if they are only just starting to be able to draw simple lines or dots. The kids love how the monsters come to life and love seeing their reaction to the various foods foods. They can create a totally new monster every time they play, and they can play in short bursts- perfect for a young chid’s limited attention span. It is a really fun, safe creative app for young children. It is most suited to 2-5 year olds, and older children with special needs, but my almost 7 year-olds enjoyed it too.

Build and Play 3D - Rockets, Helicopters, Submarines and MoreThanks to Croco Studio we have  20 promo codes to give away for Build and Play 3D – Rockets, Helicopters, Submarines and More.

Build and Play 3D – Rockets, Helicopters, Submarines and More is a sequel to the award-winning Build and Play 3D – Planes, Trains, Robots and More app (which we reviewed here), bringing you new colorful and exciting toys young children can easily build themselves and then control and play with for endless fun.

Looks like it’s time for kids to get busy because toys they can assemble in this app include:
• ATV
• Rocket
• Tip truck
• Tractor
• Submarine
• Boat
• Helicopter
• Astronaut
• Cars
• Satellite
• Bucket excavator

iPhone Screenshot 4

And it’s all so simple, they just have to put 3D parts together to get the toy complete, so everyone is a winner! Adding each part is easy as the toy rotates automatically to help children put the missing piece in the right place. Also, they can rotate the toy themselves to check what’s done and see what’s left to add. Kids will have fun joining together wheels, propellers, wings, windows and other parts to create rockets, trucks, cars, boats and much more.

Once each toy is complete, it’s time for a background change and see what they can do: the tractor moving over the wheat fields, the submarine diving on the bottom of the ocean, rockets and astronauts exploring the outer space, they are all there to help stimulate young minds’ imagination.

Monki Animal Builder by Monkimun SL – Review

20140404-020116.jpg

What we love…

Entertaining characters, animated body parts, fun sound effects and the ability to play with other children’s animals within the app.

What we’d love to see…

More ways to play with the animals.

Summary

Endless creative possibilities in a fun and playful app.

Our Rating

We’ve been having so much fun creating our very own animals with Monki Animal Builder. It is a fun (sometimes crazy) little app that springs up surprises with every tap and swipe that we make.

From the animals that hatch out from their colorful eggs, the body parts that come alive when attached to the animals to the accessories you use to decorate your animals, everything in this app is fun, fun and lots of fun.

20140404-015918.jpg

First, you help the animals hatch from their eggs and as they appear, they start to interact with you. As they introduce themselves – Hairy Ball, Pear, Butterfly, Potato, Snowman and Slug, you hear their voices and start to imagine what they are like.

20140404-015856.jpg

Then you choose one of them and begin to create your own animal. At the first stop, you get to paint the animal with cute motifs. Magical music plays as you paint and you can ‘wash’ the paint if you decide to change the look.

20140404-015953.jpg

Next, you get to select out-of-this-world body parts for your animal. These come in gift boxes and you can use as many different parts you want. You can rotate, flip or resize them and to remove any part, you simply flick it away! These parts become animated when they are attached to the animal.  Once done, you can decorate your animal with fun accessories or none at all. There are many choices to choose from and I hope there is more to come, the more the merrier!

20140404-020004.jpg

You can take a picture of your animal anytime and save it to the in-app gallery to play later on or for further editing. You can even upload your child’s masterpiece (or yours) to share with other players in the worldwide gallery and you can play with theirs as well! Take a look at mine!

20140404-020023.jpg

There are many animal/monster building apps in the App Store and I would love to see Monki Animal Builder outdo the competition by allowing the players do more with the animals that they create e.g. the animals can imitate what we say or we can have a few of our animals dance together in a party! That would be fun!

PicoToons Coloring Book by BigoBjuo Review

20140401-135326.jpg

What we love…

130 engaging pictures, great selection of tools and colors, very customizable

What we’d love to see…

Even more coloring pages and stickers

Summary

A great coloring book app with  over 130 pictures to color, sketchbook pages and a whole wealth of coloring and drawing tools. It has 3 different levels and a very customizable user interface

Our Rating

icon512-1PicoToons Coloring Book is the first app from Polish developer BigoBjuo. It features over 130 pictures to color, sketchbook pages and a whole wealth of coloring and drawing tools. It has no adverts, in-app purchases or external links. There is a parents section behind a gate- secured by multi-step math questions. In the parents section you can choose which level the child works at, but also customize many aspects of the app. You can switch on/off: the ability to save pictures to the camera roll (very useful to avoid filling it up!); saving to the built-in gallery, deleting drawings from the gallery and editing pictures in the gallery. You can also lock the child within one coloring page or within one coloring book. Music and sound effects can also be turned off in settings. You can also limit the size of the gallery, no of steps in the undo button, choose the location of additional toolbars and where or not to hide tools whilst drawing.

The app has 3 different levels and a comprehensive parents guide, which I’d recommend reading as it has useful information about the different levels. All of the pictures are available in each level, but which tools are available varies from level to level.

There are 5 different coloring books to choose from, each contains coloring pages that fit a particular theme. The books are: animals, occupations, fairies & friends, robots, and creatures. Within each book there are lots of pictures to choose from, all drawn in a fun cartoon- like style.

Beginner Level

This is very simple for the youngest users. Coloring is only by “fill-in”. A color palette is on the right side of the screen and the user scrolls up and down for more choices. There are a huge range to choose from- many shades of primary, secondary and tertiary colors but also a huge range of patterns too.  All the coloring pages are accessible.

Intermediate Level

As well as the fill tool the child also has access to a pencil and eraser with variable tip sizes. Over 80 stickers are also accessible in this level. Stickers can be rotated and re-sized, and cover a variety of topics from food and flowers; through hair, sunglasses and dress-up items; to planets and spacecraft. As well as the coloring pages, the artist all has access to the sketchbook which contains blank pages and pages with a variety of picture starters for them to complete as they wish.

20140401-130424.jpg20140401-130350.jpg

Advanced Level
All the tools are available in this level, and all coloring pages and the sketchbook. The tools are: Fill Tool, Pencil, Crayon, Brush, Marker, Paint Spray, Magic Particles Tool, Stickers, and Letters Tool. You can adjust the tip size of the various tools and the opacity of the color. With the letters tool you can choose upper or lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols; they can be re-sized and positioned similarly to the stickers. The magic particle tool draws with your choice of a variety of shapes such as flowers, leaves, bubbles and dots.

In advanced mode the Fill Tool can be used in 2 different ways – simple or advanced. With simple it will fill -in any area defined by the original drawing. In advanced mode it fills by color boundary, for example if you draw a square inside part of a drawing tapping inside this will fill in only the square. This is a great tool for making it easy to personalize the coloring pages with your own additional design details.

20140401-130331.jpg20140401-133609.jpg

Color Palette

One of my favorite things about this app is the huge color palette it includes- not only are there lots of different colors and shades to choose from but also a huge range of detailed colored patterns which make it easy to create some very unusual and interesting pictures.

20140401-130438.jpg

There are many, many coloring apps on the market but I do feel PicoToons Coloring Book stands out from the crowd. The pictures are fun and engaging, and with 130 pictures there are plenty to choose from. Where it really shines is in the developer’s attention to detail. BigoBjuo have made a coloring book with a great selection of adjustable tools, a huge color palette, very customizable user interface and a great selection of fun, engaging pictures. It can be a very simple, easy to use, fill-in coloring book for toddlers and yet it can also be a medium for older children to really use their creativity and imagination both by creating their own pictures and finding new ways to decorate the included illustrations. My favorite features are the advanced options for fill-in coloring, the  variety and adjustability of the drawing and coloring tools, and the huge color palatte- especially all the included patterns. Highly recommended!
