Handwriting Heroes by Cheryl Bregman – Review and Giveaway

image

Are you looking for a handwriting app that makes it easy for your kids to learn, practice and internalize the skill? If you are, then you should check out Handwriting Heroes right away! Designed by an occupational therapist, Handwriting Heroes is a fun app that uses an integrated multi-sensory (visual, kinesthetic, auditory and tactile) approach to teach children of all abilities how to write the lower case letters. There are animated stories with playful characters, visual cues and guided practice to engage students as well as supplementary program materials to extend the practice beyond the iPad.

What we love…

The cute and funny handwriting heroes.

What we’d love to see…

Option for longer practice session.

Summary

Students get different types of inputs in Handwriting Heroes to help them remember how to form letters correctly. From multi-sensory learning, progressive instruction, integrated practice and a specialized font, this app offers all the effective tools students need to master handwriting.

Our Rating

Students learn best when there is structure to help them organise the information that they are learning and in this app, the letters are sorted into five groups based on their beginning stroke. Each letter group has a handwriting hero that will demonstrate how it uses its superhero actions to write the letters:-

* skydivers for letters that skydive down (l, t, k, i, j)
* canon pops – start like c (c, a, d, o, q, g)
* bouncers – bounce down, up and over (h, b, r, n, m, p)
* skiers – ski diagonally down (v, w, x, y)
* surfers – surf the waves (s, u, f, e, z)

image

You can choose in the settings which letter group to work on and students can choose to play a specific letter from the main menu by tapping on the letter. Once a letter is picked, they will get to watch an animated story of how the letter is formed. The story also incorporates words that begin with that letter. For example, ‘e’ walks the plank, then surfs around to escape the evil pirate while ‘h’ drops down, bounces back up and over the haunted house. These fun animated adventures help students visualise the letter formation even when they are not on the iPad.

image

The cute and funny handwriting heroes themselves are the perfect cues to remind students on where and how to begin the first stroke. These visual reminders and the associated action words together provide important guides for students to write correctly.

After watching the animated story and learning the handwriting movement, the app automatically switches to the practice mode. There are 3 stages of practice – trace, copy and write and you can pre-select how many stages an individual student will work through. You are also given the option to choose the level of accuracy required of the student’s writing and there is no limit to the number of student accounts you can create (and customize). From the stories to the different practice formats, the 3 writing lines – skyline, clouds and grass lines are always shown clearly to help students make the necessary connection with the proper letter placement and subsequently transfer the skills to paper writing tasks.

image

In this app, students learn and practice writing the letters in groups. This definitely accelerates the learning process but if a student needs refresher on just a few letters, the app doesn’t offer a convenient way for students to keep working on a particular practice format for the same letter. Having a choice of repeat or forward button on the writing screen will be very useful in this case.

image

What I like about Handwriting Heroes is that it equips students with multiple ways to remember how to form the letters and there is emphasis on carry-over to writing on lined papers. To make it even easier for students to learn, a special Handwriting Heroes font was also developed to encourage the use of continuous strokes and to decrease reversals. You can download the font here to create worksheets and materials with the correct letter formation and line placement.

Comics Head – Create your own comic by NextWave Multimedia Inc – Review and Giveaway

screen comics head

What we love…

Lots of options and editable details to help you create your own comics.

What we’d love to see…

More cool art assets.

Summary

Comics Head is a features-packed digital tool for creating comics that will get kids to love storytelling.

Our Rating

When I was exploring Comics Head – Create your own comic by NextWave Multimedia for the first time, I kept getting ideas on how we could incorporate comics in our children’s learning. While presenting knowledge in the form of comics can greatly impact our children’s motivation to learn, I think it’s even more rewarding to have them use comics to tell a story.

Students can be encouraged to write by first planning and developing their ideas in comics, which helps to improve their thinking process. They can also relate an experience that they had through photo comics. With the use of comics, students can confidently deliver a presentation that is unique and engaging. Comics also allows them to express themselves freely and not be limited by their lack of writing skills. Comics definitely has a place in education.

To help you create your own comics, all you need is Comics Head. It is easy to use, has plenty of ready templates to get you started right away plus lots of cartoon items and editing features to help you produce professional looking comics. There is a great variety of backgrounds, characters, props and effects for you to choose from. Alternatively, you can find suitable items from the pre-packaged assets that are based on specific themes. You are not limited to these art assets alone as you can also use photos/screenshots taken from within the app and import images from your device’s photo library or external sources. Best of all, you can draw your own items and add them to your comics!

Each art item that is inserted in your comics page can be edited – horizontal/vertical flip, duplicate, crop, apply various filters, add textures, make transparent, etc. You can even change the character’s expression and pose! Comics Head is packed full with many more advanced features to help you produce the most sophisticated comics that will satisfy your audience.

What’s comics without speech bubbles and Comics Head not only allows you to add and design your speech bubbles, but also lets you add audio speech bubbles via in-app recording or importing! You can also arrange the playback sequence of these audio speech bubbles. See an audio comics created by a 7-year-old below!

There are endless possible use for this app and it’s not just for our children. Teachers can prepare their science and history lessons in comics and see their students captivated. Parents can quickly create social stories using photos of real situations when needed. We can also make our own audio comic for our kids who can’t read yet. Greeting or invitation cards, business presentations, travel journals, announcements, etc. – all these you can rely on Comics Head to do the job well!

Comics Head has awesome supportive features as well. It has several ways to share a completed comics and the in-app help section is clear and concise. Access to the various sections is straightforward and access to all the external links are disabled by default and can only be changed in the password-protected parental settings.

Comics Head makes it so easy and fun for young children to create their own comics while older students and adults will be pleased with its easy to use yet powerful self-publishing tools. With this app, anyone can be an artist and author. Whether it’s for leisure or for work, Comics Head is a worthwhile addition to any home or classroom. Check out this cool comics creator app today and see your child’s love for storytelling grow.

Bitsboard PRO – The Best Educational Learning Games and Flash Cards in 1 App by Innovative Investments Limited – Review & Giveaway

image

What we love…

Fully customizable lessons with lots of different learning modes.

What we’d love to see…

Even more boards on math.

Summary

Bitsboard Pro is the ultimate educational app with top-quality content and outstanding enabling features to meet the learning needs of every child.

Our Rating

How many times have you wished that you can modify a well-developed learning app just that little bit to better match your child’s skills. Or thought of replacing some of the content with your own instead? Have you ever wondered if there is this ONE App that can meet most (if not all) of your child’s educational needs? What about an app that can accommodate the educational goals and learning difficulties of an entire class?

This is a tall order for any app considering children learn at different pace and thrive in different learning environment. And to be able to add our own content in an app seems like an impossible task! But Bitsboard Pro has all our wishes covered. It is the ultimate educational app for children from preschool right up to elementary school level, giving you access to thousands of topics (with many new ones added every month) and the ability to customize the way students learn in the app as well as the app content itself.

Alright, most of us don’t have the time nor inclination to create our own content. We just want an app that has ready-to-download learning materials and Bitsboard has lots of content to offer. After creating a user account, you can browse through Bitsboard’s extensive lessons catalog or search for specific lessons and download (over the internet) the ones that you need. Here, lessons are presented in individual boards, each containing a series of flashcards (bits). Topics include languages, vocabulary, grammar, reading (sight words, word families, phonics, readers), sentence maker, speech, spelling, letter tracing, math facts, math operations, money, time telling, sign language, routines, sequences, emotions and many more! The free version of Bitsboard itself comes with lots of shared resources that you can start with right away.

What I really love in Bitsboard is that you can choose up to 30 fully customizable learning modes or games that help children to learn and retain the information presented in the lessons. You can start with the simpler games and progress to the more complex ones. With so many different ways to learn the same materials, students remain engaged and learn better. Check out Bitsboard’s long list of fun learning games – Flashcards, Explore, True or False, Photo Touch, Photo Hunt, Memory Cards, Pop Quiz, Match Up, Word Builder, Sentence Builder, Spelling Bee, BINGO, Letter Tracing, Sequences, Related items, Word Search, Word Chunks, Crosswords, Unscramble, Say It, Missing Item, Puzzles, Reader, What’s Next, Odd One Out, Sort It, Side by Side, Story Time, Genius, Review Game and Board Creator

For each game, you can modify things like the session length, with or without visual/audio hints, spelling order, display options, number of tiles, matching options and answer mode. Customization is easy but it would be tedious if you have more than 1 user. Luckily, you don’t have to keep adjusting the settings and preferences as these are saved for each user (unlimited users for the Pro version). Likewise, the tracking of detailed progress and lesson plans is stored at the user level. Bitsboard’s learning algorithm also ensures that each game automatically advances according to the individual user’s skills.

image

If you are an educator, you will like the ease of creating custom lessons with your own cards (from photo library, dropbox, web search or Bitsboard Catalog of images), audio recording and text (words, phrases, sentences, description). Your students can learn anything you present to them using the Bitsboard learning games. You can also set up your own exclusive class with your own selection of boards for sharing with your students or fellow teachers privately.

image

I’m truly impressed with all the meaningful features that have been continually added in Bitsboard in order to support students and educators. There are many more that are not mentioned here. This all-in-one educational app far exceeds all my expectations in terms of content and ability to be customized. I don’t think you’ll find another app that is as versatile and comprehensive as this. Bitsboard Pro is an essential learning app that all families and classes must have!

Cursive Writing LetterSchool – kids learn to write letters, alphabet and numbers by Sanoma Media Netherlands – Review and Giveaway

image

Is there value in learning cursive writing even though schools have stopped teaching them? I enjoy writing personal letters to my older children in beautiful cursive writing on their special occasions but unfortunately they can’t really read them. And when it was time for them to “design” their own signatures, they didn’t even know how to start! I was shocked and disappointed to say the least.

What we love…

Fun animations and sound effects to keep children engaged and motivated.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to add and practice writing our own words e.g. names in cursive.

Summary

A fun and colorful app with great supportive features to help children learn cursive writing in a multi-sensory learning environment.

Our Rating

Now that I have access to cursive handwriting apps that make it easy to teach this skill, I really have no excuse for not introducing it to my youngest. In fact, this skill may even help to improve his letter spacing and handwriting speed. I think being able to write words in continuos strokes will help him see the word as a whole rather than separate letters.

He first learnt how to form his letters with the original LetterSchool and I’m happy to see that he is equally engaged with their new Cursive Writing LetterSchool. This app is perfect for a child just beginning to learn cursive letters and numbers while it reinforces the child’s knowledge of names/sounds of the letters as well as the quantity represented by the numbers.

image

Before handing over the app to your child, you have to set up the app by choosing what you want your child to learn – letters or numbers and in what typeface (D’Nealian Cursive or Zaner Bloser Cursive). For letters, you have the choice of uppercase or lowercase. This app allows you to save up to 3 profiles with separate settings and progress trackings.

There are 4 levels of learning for each letter and number – Introduction, Tap, Trace and Write. Students are first introduced to the shape, name and sound of letters together with a word that begins with it. For numbers, they also get to see the quantity. Next they learn where to start each stroke by tapping the reference points in the correct sequence and watch the strokes come alive with fun animations and sound effects. As students trace in the next level, they are building various kinds of tracks paving the way for fireworks, race cars, trains, pinballs and more! The final level challenges students to write the letters and numbers from memory.

image

Once a child has gone through a complete set of letters or numbers, a new level of play with totally new animations is unlocked. This keeps the app fresh even after the child has practiced writing multiple times in the app. It would be great if a counter is visible on the screen to show how many times a letter/number has been traced/written correctly.

image

What stood out for me in this app is the various prompts given to students when and where they need it. Reference points, arrows and guidelines direct students to the precise strokes to make. Handwriting lines are also present for lower case letters to show students the correct letter placement.

This app has definitely made cursive writing practice cool and fun with lots of actions, sparkles and celebrations. I really like the app’s multi-sensory learning approach and the superb supportive features to ensure success. I think this could be the only cursive handwriting app that my son ever needs!
