Our Rating

Toddler Kids Puzzles Puzzingo – Educational GamesAs a mom of two kids, Puzzingo by 77Sparx Studio, Inc, a universal app for iOS has saved me hundreds of hours of cleaning up pieces, trying to find missing ones or worse yet not being able to complete a puzzle in the limited time I had with my kids.   Puzzingo recently launched a bunch of new great updates which include new puzzles, more animations and sounds and encourages kids to look at the pieces to fit them into the right spot.  The app encourages kids to look at the pieces offered, and then figure out which of the spots they fit into.  This free version of the app includes a free daily puzzle as well as in-app purchases protected by a parental gate to purchase additional content.  You can set the puzzles to be “easy” or “super easy” and the music can be turned on or off.

Puzzingo has added a lot of great new content to the app this year which includes: pirates, music, bugs, sports, fairytales, as well as 15 new mini games just in 2016!

One of the things I like about the app is that it only gives two choices at a time when putting the puzzle together, that means that my two and a half year old isn’t overwhelmed by all the potential choices of which puzzle piece to pick.  I also love that when I use it with him we can talk about what the pieces are – for example we recently played with the new bugs puzzle, because what little boy doesn’t love bugs!  First, you “pop” open the present and then you are given two pieces which you have to fit into the puzzle.  I also liked that the names of the items are spoken and if it is put in the wrong place more than once, you are gently guided using a red arrow to put it in the right spot.  As you add more items to the puzzle, it becomes more complex and the picture begins to fill in.   After you finish the puzzle, you can then “create the bug” by picking your favorite choices of the interactive bug and when you are done you “exit”.  I also like the brightly colored illustrations which both my kids liked as well.  I also liked that once you buy a in-app purchase pack or if you buy the “all access pass” you continue to be able to keep your content. We also named the shapes and worked on shape recognition to realize what pieces fit into what spots.

My older son loves sports, so he was happy to see a new sports puzzle added to the app.  He loved the football puzzle the most and liked how the images filled in and completed the puzzle after he added the pieces. He did struggle a bit with the mini game where you kicked the football but finally figured out that if you tapped toward the right side of the he would be able to get a trophy.  I really like the illustrations and that the spoken words are clear, no matter what the language is.  There are visual and audio cues designed to make the app usable by toddlers and special needs kids.

There are parental gates which requires answering a simple math problem in order to access a parental control area which includes email, social media and internet.

In terms of enhancements, my son wanted to be able to “save” his completed puzzles to the camera roll.  We just did this by taking a snapshot of my iPad using the home and power button.  It would also be fun, according to him if we were able to save the mini games and trophies in a case.

Overall, this is an app that has wide appeal to kids young and old and can be played by yourself or in a multi-player setting with kids taking turns.  I really like all of the new updates that were included as did my kids!

What we love…

bright cheerful graphics and our friend Curious George bringing us on a science and math inspired adventure which requires problem solving and self regulation.

What we’d love to see…

the entire app included in the purchase price, ability to make it easier or harder depending on the age of the child

Summary

Great app featuring Curious George and working on STEM based activities.  This app includes IAP for additional worlds within it which isn’t clearly noted in the app description.

Our Rating

Curious George Train Adventures by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is a universal app for iOS featuring Curious George on a train as he travels through a variety of different scenes.    The app works on fine motor, creative thinking to solve obstacles and puzzles as well as working memory and understanding the speed of the train.  As you go through the game, you control the speed of the train by using a lever at the bottom of the screen which ranges from 0 (stop) to green (fast).  Obstacles appear in the game including ones you can touch away, boards that you have to climb up with the train as well as making a bridge come up or avoiding falling into a hole.  Concepts practiced here included increasing and decreasing speed, opening gates, navigating obstacles like flowers and pineapples as well as raising bridges.  As you complete the level you are star rated based on how many objects remained in your train during the journey – if you go to fast over an obstacle you can lose objects and have to redo the level in order to unlock the next level of the app.  This app includes IAP for additional worlds within it which isn’t clearly noted in the app description.

iPad Screenshot 4

I liked the graphics in the app as well as the fact that you had to control the speed with your finger at all times.  This encouraged my son to regulate the speed and he would look forward to see that a warning sign was coming up and he would anticipate that he would need to slow down the train in order to continue on.      This encouraged him to be observant so that he didn’t have to redo the levels over and over again.  I also liked that the obstacles got progressively harder with each level – pulley’s and cranks made it interesting for my son as he asked me questions about how they worked and it became a discussion point as we tested them out.  What happens if you go on the bridge without turning the crank.

In terms of improvements, I would suggest the entire app be available with the purchase of it.  It was a bit disappointing to my kids to learn that if they wanted to try another one of the worlds it remained locked unless we purchased the IAP.  Other improvements could include an age toggle so that the app could be made a bit easier for younger kids – the demographic of Curious George is preschool but some of the activities in here were aimed at elementary aged children which could lead to frustration.  I also found that the narration in the app was a bit echoed – and sometimes the Man with the Yellow Hat’s mouth moved but his voice was not in sync.  I’d also like to see colors and shapes included in the app – perhaps this could be something in a future addition – you could puzzle in the shapes to complete the bridge.

The app does include in app purchases to purchase additional worlds within in but it is protected with a parental gate.  The additional words are  Frosty Wonderland, Zany Meadows and Space Spectacular. Each world has 10 levels and can be purchased for $1.99.  The additional worlds have similar concepts but just different backgrounds.

Overall, this is a fun app for preschool through early elementary aged children that has some great skill building in it. I liked the puzzle solving portion of it the most as well as the regulation of the train which encouraged kids that it wasn’t always about getting there the fastest – something that I try to teach my kids on a regular basis.

imageParents often ask what basic concepts should their preschoolers know before entering Kindergarten. We love to check off lists of concepts to learn but it’s so easy to be carried away and overwhelm our young learners with worksheets upon worksheets. That is why I always value storybook apps that are both entertaining and educational as it gets young readers to learn concepts without them realizing it.

What we love…

Meaningful interactions that are fun and educational as well.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to tap individual words to have them read out.

Summary

A giggly-fun animated storybook for preschoolers that cleverly integrates age appropriate thinking skills activities into the plot.

Our Rating

One Giggly Gorilla, the sequel to the highly acclaimed Ten Giggly Gorillas, is both a storybook and a fun educational game app that skilfully incorporates a series of basic preschool concepts and thinking skills activities.

image

The story begins with one gorilla hanging at the bottom of a tree and as he climbs further up the tree, he meets more gorillas who are also on the way up to the top of the tree for bananas. But these cheeky gorillas just won’t let the readers have it easy. Preschoolers have to listen carefully to descriptions, comprehend and follow instructions, count, observe, recognize colors, sequence and problem solve in order to advance the story.

Each page presents a unique and fun activity for kids to complete plus a hidden toucan to find. I have no doubt that your preschooler will love to lend a finger to flick the correct gorilla higher up the tree or perhaps tap on the wrong gorilla just to hear what naughty things it will say. There is even a surprise move when all the gorillas have reached the top of the tree.

This is one superb storybook app with beautiful visuals, great 3D animations, realistic forest sound in the background, amusing dialogue, engaging narration and imaginative rhyming text. Furthermore, the words are highlighted in sync with the narration and the length of the story is just right for the target audience.

So, why should you settle for a typical storybook app when you can have one that is entertaining with cute characters and filled with fun interactions that work on concepts and thinking skills appropriate for preschool – like One Giggly Gorilla. Check it out today!

What we love…

Fully customizable lessons with lots of different learning modes.

What we’d love to see…

Even more boards on math.

Summary

Bitsboard Pro is the ultimate educational app with top-quality content and outstanding enabling features to meet the learning needs of every child.

Our Rating

How many times have you wished that you can modify a well-developed learning app just that little bit to better match your child’s skills. Or thought of replacing some of the content with your own instead? Have you ever wondered if there is this ONE App that can meet most (if not all) of your child’s educational needs? What about an app that can accommodate the educational goals and learning difficulties of an entire class?

This is a tall order for any app considering children learn at different pace and thrive in different learning environment. And to be able to add our own content in an app seems like an impossible task! But Bitsboard Pro has all our wishes covered. It is the ultimate educational app for children from preschool right up to elementary school level, giving you access to thousands of topics (with many new ones added every month) and the ability to customize the way students learn in the app as well as the app content itself.

Alright, most of us don’t have the time nor inclination to create our own content. We just want an app that has ready-to-download learning materials and Bitsboard has lots of content to offer. After creating a user account, you can browse through Bitsboard’s extensive lessons catalog or search for specific lessons and download (over the internet) the ones that you need. Here, lessons are presented in individual boards, each containing a series of flashcards (bits). Topics include languages, vocabulary, grammar, reading (sight words, word families, phonics, readers), sentence maker, speech, spelling, letter tracing, math facts, math operations, money, time telling, sign language, routines, sequences, emotions and many more! The free version of Bitsboard itself comes with lots of shared resources that you can start with right away.

What I really love in Bitsboard is that you can choose up to 30 fully customizable learning modes or games that help children to learn and retain the information presented in the lessons. You can start with the simpler games and progress to the more complex ones. With so many different ways to learn the same materials, students remain engaged and learn better. Check out Bitsboard’s long list of fun learning games – Flashcards, Explore, True or False, Photo Touch, Photo Hunt, Memory Cards, Pop Quiz, Match Up, Word Builder, Sentence Builder, Spelling Bee, BINGO, Letter Tracing, Sequences, Related items, Word Search, Word Chunks, Crosswords, Unscramble, Say It, Missing Item, Puzzles, Reader, What’s Next, Odd One Out, Sort It, Side by Side, Story Time, Genius, Review Game and Board Creator

For each game, you can modify things like the session length, with or without visual/audio hints, spelling order, display options, number of tiles, matching options and answer mode. Customization is easy but it would be tedious if you have more than 1 user. Luckily, you don’t have to keep adjusting the settings and preferences as these are saved for each user (unlimited users for the Pro version). Likewise, the tracking of detailed progress and lesson plans is stored at the user level. Bitsboard’s learning algorithm also ensures that each game automatically advances according to the individual user’s skills.

image

If you are an educator, you will like the ease of creating custom lessons with your own cards (from photo library, dropbox, web search or Bitsboard Catalog of images), audio recording and text (words, phrases, sentences, description). Your students can learn anything you present to them using the Bitsboard learning games. You can also set up your own exclusive class with your own selection of boards for sharing with your students or fellow teachers privately.

image

I’m truly impressed with all the meaningful features that have been continually added in Bitsboard in order to support students and educators. There are many more that are not mentioned here. This all-in-one educational app far exceeds all my expectations in terms of content and ability to be customized. I don’t think you’ll find another app that is as versatile and comprehensive as this. Bitsboard Pro is an essential learning app that all families and classes must have!
