Our Rating

Bamba Space StationBamba Space Station by Bamba is a universal space themed app for iOS.  This pretend play app features a space station in a far away galaxy.  Children can choose from seven different characters, eleven different rooms, and a variety of different mini games.  There are costumes on the characters that you can change, creating new items and much more.  The app has a variety of different rooms and overall is very interactive.  Almost everything we touched had either a motion, object that you could make or a noise attached to it which encouraged my seven-year-old to explore more.  That had lots of fun objects to play with including costume changes, balloons, sand, sand toys as well as tasty snacks.  After you finish each scene, the characters skitter to the next one.   As you complete more levels, new characters come as do new costumes and activities.  When you are done, you can go back to the main screen – hit “recycle” and everything will go back to the way it was before you started playing.   Be sure to check out some of our other Bamba app reviews including: Bamba Toys, Bamba Pizza, and Bamba Burger.

My son and I loved the graphics in the app as well as creating new objects.  It was a fun hunt in the app to find all of them.  When you switch rooms within the app a set of instructions are given to complete a task in graphical format which makes it a great app for preschool through early elementary school.  The tasks were engaging – and the instructions easy to follow.  My son loved the kitchen where he experimented with a variety of ice creams, and coffee combinations.  He also enjoyed making pancakes complete with maple syrup.  After the scene is completed, you can take a photo which is saved on your camera roll and then have a dance party where all the loose objects float around.   After you are done the magic vacuum sucks any lose objects up.  My son also really enjoyed the costumes and giving the characters a nap and clothing change.  There were so many fun interactive elements that each time we played it seems like we are discovering something new.    His favorite room by far was the pool area and treasure chest.  We loved seeing the characters’ expressions when they tried some of our food combinations as well as watching them dance on the screen.  I only wish I had the magic space vacuum to clean up after his toys at home!

In terms of enhancements’, he asked me why there were no plates in the kitchen since we use plates.  He also wanted a spot to put down the tools (without losing them – like a toolbox) so that he could fully interact with each of the scenes.  Right now they carry the items from scene to scene so he had to put them down and pick them up each time.  It would also be nice if you could show the “instructions” page multiple times – we had to exit and re-open the app in order for that to happen.

There are no in-app purchases or external advertisements.  The app does have an advertisement for other Bamba apps but it parental gate locked with a math problem.

Overall, this is a fun and interactive spaced themed app that encourages kids to play and be creative.  My son has already spent several hours testing out the various objects and showing me his “creations!” The reset feature is great as well especially if you have multiple kids playing and they want “my turn!”.

What we love…

fun app that has a practical application to show children cause and effect of different activities of everyday life and how simple changes like turning off water while you brush your teeth can make a big difference

What we’d love to see…

more mini games including recycling; adding more clothing instead of turning on or off the heat

Summary

App that teaches cause and effect of simple every day actions that can make a big difference

Our Rating

Bert Save the Earth Bert Saves the Earth by 1Tucan is an app for iOS designed to help your child realize that simple actions can help to reduce their environmental impact.  The app is targeting toddlers through preschool and helps them understand that simple actions such as turning off the water while brushing teeth, cleaning up plastic bags properly will have an impact and help to keep animals safe with habitat.  The app features activities that one does during the day such as taking a shower/bath, brushing their teeth, and recycling with each having a cause and effect to show them how doing the “right” thing will benefit animals.  For example by turning off the water while brushing your teeth, the horse is able to have water in his trough.   The app contains narration in English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and Japanese and can be used on an iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. The app can also be used to name different activities and help children identify a variety of animals.

The app is simple enough for young children to grasp and will encourage them to make the right choice such as turning off the tap as well as properly disposing of plastic bags – or better yet not using them at all.  I do think that the behavior shown in the app is easy for a parent to model while helping their child such as turning off the water, cleaning up plastic bags which is a nice carryover and will further help the earth.  Navigation within the app consists of a globe shape where five different scenes are played out with each one featuring a different animal and problem that they must solve in order to complete it.  For example, by turning off the lights in a scene you can make it snow on the screen or by turning off the water while brushing your teeth you can give a horse more water to drink.  I also liked that the app used cause and effect by showing the user if you did this action then this would happen.  It provided for consistent follow through and enables the children to see that their action will make a difference.  My older son’s favorite was showering quickly so he could see the ducks swim – he enjoyed seeing the cause and effect.

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see more activities that you can do at home to save the Earth.  Suggestions would include:  adding or removing a layer of clothing as able when it is too cold or too hot out; demonstrating that you can add an additional layer of clothing when you are cold rather than turning the heat up.  For the scene in the ocean rather than simply removing the plastic bags – making the suggestion of reusable bags (when they may sense) would save not only trash from the environment but money as well.  Adding a mini game that has children sorting different types of recycling like newspapers, glass, cardboard into each of the respective containers would show them that sometimes even though we buy products that have packing we can recycle them for re-use.  With additional games the app will appeal to a wider audience and having a longer playing time for children.

Overall, this app will have your children doing a variety of activities both on their device as well as off of it that are simple and will reduce their environmental impact.  There are no in-app purchases, advertising or external links.  The app is one that will engage especially young children, but older children may find that due to the limited amount of activities and ease of completion it may not hold their attention as long as other apps.
