Grandma Loves Bugs by Fairlady Media – Review and iTunes gift card giveaway

What we love…

ability to tailor learning to your child’s level by picking the mini games that are best suited to their ability; educational learning content that is fun and has kids playing without even realizing they are learning

What we’d love to see…

“hint” option  as well as the ability to “count” items like fireflies using your finger rather than choosing the wrong choice.

Summary

Fantastic educational app that lets you target a variety of skills for preschool through early elementary school aged children

Our Rating

Grandma Loves Bugs by Fairlady Media for iOS is the newest addition to their educational app collection.  The app includes ten mini games including: spot the difference, magic coloring, letter match, bug spelling, counting fireflies, number groups, bug identification, feed the baby bird, bug matching and building a spider web.  The app incorporates skills for children aged preschool through early elementary school who are learning while they are having fun!  Be sure to check out our reviews of Grandma’s Kitchen and Grandpa’s Workshop, two of the other apps in their collection.  This would be a great app for practicing fine motor, speech skills including spoken and understood directions, counting.  I can also see it being used by speech therapists.

One of my favorite features of the app – other than the fact that my son is learning without even realizing is that I can go into the parental settings and choose which games I want him to play to target specific skill sets.  The app has very good photos of bugs that are realistic while providing educational content for children.  It was nice that Grandma gave an overview of what we were looking at while we used the magnifying glass.  My son’s favorite game was bug spelling – and I liked that it required you to put the letters on in order for the word to be spelled.  My son also loved building a spider web and trying to catch the bugs as they flew by.

iPhone Screenshot 5

In terms of enhancements, for the counting fireflies, it would be nice for children to be able to touch the bugs for counting or at least have a setting for them to do so as my son is used to touching to count and got the answer wrong several times when he tapped on them to count. A “hint” option for children struggling and getting the answer wrong multiple times.

This app is a fun app for your bug loving preschoolers through early elementary aged children which ties learning to fun with bugs!

A to Sea by Joshua and Donna Wilson- Review

What we love…

Beautiful graphics, lots of interactivity,  soothing sounds, fun facts about each animal

What we’d love to see…

Letter sounds, narration of the “extra fun facts”

Summary

An excellent app that teaches children their alphabet and instills appreciation for sea creatures

Our Rating

A to Sea by Josh and Donna Wilson of The Happy Dandelion is not your ordinary ABC book.  Every page, including the cover page, has beautiful interactive graphics combined with soothing narration and audio. The book app comes in both iPhone and iPad versions, this review is of the iPad version.

Each letter in the alphabet is represented by a sea creature with an anecdotal description.  You can either read the text on your own, or click on it to have it read it out loud.  Click or tilt the screen to move the sea creature, see an animation, and/or hear sounds.  Clicking on the bottom of the screen brings up a small banner with an interesting fact about the sea creature. These extra facts are not narrated, it would be nice to be able to have them read aloud too. The banner also contains the home button which will take you back to the home screen.

iPad Screenshot 2

The pictures, animations, and sounds on each page make you feel as if you have been magically transported to a serene beach, walking along the shore, and taken a dive in the beautiful big blue sea.  Children will be delighted with all the interactive items while learning an interesting fact or two about each creature they encounter.

A to Sea contains no external links, which makes this app excellent for little ones to play even on their own.   A URL is listed on the credits page for parents to type in to their browser should they choose to (and I believe they will) get more information about The Happy Dandelion and other apps they offer.

One thing I would like to see possibly included in future updates are letter sounds.  For example, clicking on the letter A will bring up an audio that says “The letter A sounds like ah or a.”

Overall, A to Sea is an excellent app that teaches children their alphabet and instills appreciation for the sea and its inhabitants at the same time.  I highly recommend it!

Fun English Course by Studycat Limited – Review

What we love…

flexible app that teaches a variety of verbs, adjectives, sign words, letters and numbers to children from toddler through late elementary school

What we’d love to see…

multi user functionality; ability to track progress in a dashboard rather than having to start over each time; better instructions for the mini games

Summary

This app would be a good one for English as a second language learner as the curriculum included is straightforward and will help children learn in a sequential way. For a child that is already a native English speaker, it might be useful in early intervention or other skills based learning for children with a speech delay.

Our Rating

Fun English Course - Language Learning Games for Kids aged 3-10. Toddlers, kindergarten and preschool children learn English through play activities.Fun English Course by Studycat Limited is a universal app designed for iOS to teach children English through a variety of games and activities targeting children from preschool through elementary school with older learners learning English as a second language. Through a variety of games including colors, animals, numbers, food, vehicles, body parts, fruits, clothing, items around the house, and sea animals children are treated to a variety of activities to help teach them about the basics about the item through a set of exercises including finding an object in a scene, spelling, memory cards, pairing up items, listening skills and more. The app features bright colors and animations and each game has a different set of activities designed to engage children without making it feel repetitive for learning. The languages offered for the app include: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese. The app teaches things like singular and plural, spelling, verbs like “to be”, “to have” and “to put” as well as “likes/doesn’t like”, descriptors on “he/she is wearing, adjectives and more. Each lesson starts with an introduction to the word and then proceeds into a variety of games for children to play. The app also features a “lite” version with in-app purchases allowing you to try the app before making the purchase either of modules or the entire app. Each game has a variety of levels which your child must master before being able to move on to the next level.

iPhone Screenshot 3

In terms of things that I liked, I found the app engaging for my five year old as we worked on word identification, item identification and basic English skills. He is currently working on sight words at school – so there were times I took items in the app out of context and focused on skills specific to his needs rather than what the app was trying to teach him. Having the different sections allowed me to help him target specific areas that he needed to focus on. The app engages and I liked that the games did not repeat over and over again and helped focus in on specific skills.

I also found some of the games needed more instruction as they were a bit “hit or miss” as to how to play them especially the fish game in the numbers section. To complete this game you needed to shoot a pearl at the fish in order to make him count – we figured this out after tapping on him multiple times without success. The app does have a locked parent section which requires a swipe. Given that this targets children from the very young to older, I’d like to at least see a math problem included here to prevent kids from getting into external links as well as social media. I would also like to see a dashboard of items that your child has worked on and areas that might need additional focus as well as an option for multiple children. Given the price of the app – I was disappointed to see that it did not include that functionality as I can see this as a tool that speech therapists as well as classroom teachers and parents would use, but it is one of the higher priced apps at $12.99 and this would help it appeal to a wider audience. I would also like to see counting to a higher number such as 20 or 30 included as this is a skill that preschool/kindergarten students are expected to have.

This app would be a good one for English as a second language learner as the curriculum included is straightforward and will help children learn in a sequential way. For a child that is already a native English speaker, it might be useful in early intervention or other skills based learning for children with a speech delay.

Jamaroos Musical ABCs by Iggy Learning – Review and Giveaway

Jamaroos

What we love…

More word examples for each letter than the typical alphabet app and the exposure to musical instruments from around the world.

What we’d love to see…

A direct link to the descriptions of each instrument from the corresponding letter’s page. Audio clips play in sequence instead of being allowed to play simultaneously.

Summary

An entertaining app that is full of exciting sound effects, original music, kid-friendly words and cute animal characters that gives your child multiple and varied alphabet learning opportunities.

Our Rating

In Jamaroos Musical ABCs, 26 different animals (one representing each alphabet letter) come together to perform 26 original piece of music on 26 different musical instruments to teach young children the name and sound of 26 uppercase letters. Indeed, there are lots to discover and learn in this app.

20140121-005923.jpg

To watch the animals perform, your child chooses a letter from below the jungle stage and bring it onto the stage. He will then hear the letter name followed by an introduction of the animal musician with its instrument (e.g. Gat the Gecko plays the Guitar). After you’re done with highlighting the 3 words that begin with the letter, get him to tap the animal to start the animated musical performance (up to 20 seconds long) and enjoy. As with the rest of the app, the quality of the music recordings is superb. The musical styles and the type of musical instruments featured is also varied and interesting, in particular, check out the Washboard that is played with spoons, bottle openers etc in jazz!! I personally like the introduction of both modern and traditional musical instruments from around the world to young children. They learn about the names, appearance and sounds of these instruments and if your child (or even yourself) want to know more, you can refer him to a brief description on a separate ‘About the Instruments’ page. It would be nice if the relevant notes are readily available from the letter’s page itself.

20140121-005907.jpg

Lest your child thinks that is all to the app (because that is a lot of content already), surprise him by tapping the four icons that are featured on the side of the stage. Each of these lead to a little game where the letter sound is taught and reinforced with more words that begin with that letter. Even with a total of 7 word examples for each letter, the letter sounds heard in the words chosen is consistent to what is being taught, unlike in some apps where the choice of words can confuse the learner, e.g. the use of the words, xylophone or x-ray to illustrate the sound of ‘X'(ks sound). In Jamaroos Musical ABCs, your child will learn better examples – taXi, foX, boX and aXe, LoX and saXophone.

20140121-005944.jpg

I like the multiple opportunities for kids to learn the alphabet in this app. For each letter of the alphabet, your child will learn the name of the animal and musical instrument plus 4 other vocabulary words that reinforce the letter sound. It is colorful, entertaining and full of exciting sound effects, original music, kid-friendly words and cute animal characters. Your child will come to associate each alphabet letter with the animal character and its musical instrument from the app and learn the alphabet very quickly.

There is more educational content and fun action in this app for toddlers and preschoolers than many other alphabet apps out there. So if you are looking for an alphabet learning app, you need to check out Jamaroos Musical ABCs.
