Our Rating

Zooper ABC Animals

Zooper ABC Animals by Zooper Dooper Edutainment Inc is a fun app for iOS that is designed for toddler through early preschool to teach them the alphabet as well as phonics and the sound of each letter.  This interactive app features 26 letters, with each featuring their own animated animal and rhyme.  After seeing the animal and the rhyme, you can trace upper and lower case versions of the letter and hear the different sounds the letter can make in a variety of placements within a word.  The app can be used with narration, or it can be used in silent mode if you are with your child and working with them 1:1.

The app features:

  • Interactive rhyme that introduces your child to the letter sound
  • Tracing lesson both uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Guessing game to find objects that begin with the same letter as the animal such as ambulance or dolphin

iPhone Screenshot 2My toddler was a bit young for the app, but we looked at each of the letters (with the sound off) and I told him the name of the animal as well as the letter sound.  He enjoyed tapping on the screen and finding the animations.  For my older son, he still has trouble at times with sounding out words and phonics so I let him explore the app.  He enjoyed the “Zooper Dooper Bloopers” and the mistakes as well as listening to the different letters with the word.  I really liked that the app practiced a number of skills including object identification (the animal), tracing (both upper and lower case) as well as phonics.  I think that the phonics component makes the app unique and will help it appeal not only to parents of toddlers but those with other children who may be struggling with phonics.  The illustrations are fun and interactive and the narration is clear which is especially helpful when you have a child struggling with phonics or speech sounds.  My older son also enjoyed picking out the items that started with the specific letter as well.

iPhone Screenshot 3

In terms of enhancements, it would be nice if the tracing activity showed if the letter was traced correctly or not.  Currently, you can trace the letter either on or off target and there is no feedback about if it was done correctly.  There is also no way to erase or undo if you go off course, other than exiting the page and going back.

Overall, this is a fun alphabet app which is a little bit different than the norm since it includes object identification, tracing and phonics activities.  This app is different from the norm of alphabet apps and takes learning to a fun and zany new level!  There is no external advertising or in-app purchase.  Comprehensive alphabet app that goes beyond the traditional see the letter and say it to include tracing and phonics.  Top pick!

Wonster Words by 77Sparx Studio – Review & Giveaway

iPad Screenshot 1

What we love…

easy to use phonics and reading app that provides word families to encourage reading with phonics

What we’d love to see…

Stronger parental gate, more instructions for some of the mini games

Summary

Fun app for emerging readers that mixes monsters and fun

Our Rating

Wonster Words - spelling... iconWonster Words is an app for iOS which teaches kids words using word families, phonics, vocabulary words and digraphs in a fun interactive way using monsters as the underlying theme.  For example, the word families for “at” include “splat”, “cat”, “rat”, “bat”.  First you make the word with letters then you see a variety of ways it is illustrated “baseball bat” or “bat” the animal.  After completing the word, you move on to see it illustrated and then used in a “real world” setting.  The app is targeted at older preschool and early elementary aged children as it captures a number of sight words and can be used by pre-reading children as well as those working on sight words.

I loved when you were making words that the letters are sounded out individually as that helped my son clearly understand each of the words and the sounds that they made as well a describing what the word did.  For example, “hike” showed the word and then a nature hike.   There’s a nice carry over of skills here that encourages kids to engage in a fun way and continue using the app.  I also liked that you could scroll through the app and look for specific word families to practice on – my son in particular struggles with the “th” since it’s silent at times and he did well with this lesson and was able to practice the words in real time.  My son also commented that the monsters “were not scary” and he liked that.

In terms of improvements, I would like to see the word spelling required to be done in order rather than just dragging the letters in as it encourages kids to sound out the word.  I also wish that there were instructions for some of the games, the one with the monster falling where you need to capture the lightening bugs took a bit for my son to figure out – although he loved the obstacles and trying to catch all of them.  The price point for the app is a bit high, but you do get a lot of content for the dollar.  I would also like to see a stronger parental gate, perhaps one that includes a math problem rather than a “press and hold” model.

Overall, this app is a good one for teaching emerging readers. It did a nice job of practicing phonics and word families and helped my son understand the concepts of reading. The price tag is a bit high so I encourage you to try it and if you like it, then you can purchase it either via in-app purchases or by purchasing the pro version of the app.

Learn to Read Nok-Syllables by Pitruf Games – Review

Captura de pantalla del iPad 4

What we love…

easy to use app that uses a build upon approach to encourage reading using positive reinforcement and reminders

What we’d love to see…

a more natural narration as well as the ability to  see the words that your child missed and the ability to tap on the object to hear the word spoken again

Summary

This app  helps your child expand their reading horizons and provides a simple approach to help them move forward in their understanding in a frustration free manner

Our Rating

icon_syllablesLearn to Read Nok-Syllables by Pitruf Games is an app designed for iPhone and iPad that will help your child learn to read.  It contains four mini games including syllable counting, distinguishing syllables from a field of objects (i.e. a chicken, a butterfly and a helicopter) and choosing which one has the correct number of syllables and then the object comes to life in this case the butterfly and flies away!  The third and fourth activities require the child to sequencing the syllables in the correct order by choosing from a field of words.  The third activity builds with written letters the word such as “rectangle” where a rectangle is shown as is two thirds of the word, you had to fill in the correct front of the word.  The fourth activity requires you to build the word using a field of words such as “butterfly” or “taxi”.  Each different activity has three levels and after completing the activities a tournament mode is available.  The dashboard where you pick the games shows how many levels you have completed as well as allowing you to choose the level of difficulty ranging from (one to three).  The app is designed for preschool through early elementary school (grade 2) age. This could be a good app for speech therapists to use as well if they are having trouble with a child fronting and backing a word as they try to pronounce it.

The app opens by displaying a series of “jugs” which represent syllables and your child has to listen to the spoken word and then click the correct number of jars depending on the number of syllables.  The app begins easy with words like “two” and “cross” and moves to words like “monkey” and “investigator” as competency is mastered.  I encouraged my son to clap out the syllables if he was trying to figure out how many syllables there were.  The word is pronounced each time along with “guess how many syllables” and if you don’t complete it fast enough then it is repeated.

I really liked that this was an app my seven year old could use independently to practice his reading.  In the app, I encouraged him to clap out the syllables if he was uncertain and that helped quite a bit in the understanding of the words. I liked that word highlighting was used within the app to show the syllables as that provided a good visual reminder as well especially if the given answer was wrong. My seven year old is only reading sight words, so it was helpful to not only have the photo of the word, but also the written word below so he could be exposed to them to practice and see the words.

In terms of improvements, I found the narration a bit mechanical which I would expect since the main characters were robots.  I would like to see a way to tap on the word (i.e. monkey) and just hear the word.  I also found a few spots where the language wasn’t translated to English such as the front screen – which I am assuming says “wait” while the app loads.  I’d also love to see a list of the most commonly missed words that my child struggled with after completing the levels so that I could work with him on them.

Overall, this is a great syllable counting app to add to your arsenal.  It helps your child expand their reading horizons and provides a simple approach to help them move forward in their understanding in a frustration free manner.  The mini games are engaging and my son enjoyed playing with this app during his “reading time” activities and was able to successfully complete level one and two of both the first and the second game.  There are no external links or in app-purchases.
