What we’d love to see…

Summary

A digital book that is just as magical as the movie Frozen

Our Rating

Frozen: Storybook DeluxeFrozen by Disney Digital Books retells the story of the animated film, Frozen, in a truly magical way. It tells the story of two sisters, Anna and Elsa, who are princesses in a kingdom called Arendelle.   Elsa is gifted with the ability to make ice and snow.  One day she accidentally unleashes her powers and turns Arendelle into a permanent winter wonderland.  Frightened, Elsa runs away.  Anna sets off on a journey to find Elsa and bring her back, rather ironically, to save Arendelle.  Along the way, both Anna and Elsa learn a lesson about true love.

This app is full of features that will make children feel they have been magically transported to the frozen kingdom of Arendelle.  Each page is setup so that the left side shows the book page and the right side shows a portion of a picture. Swipe to the left and the whole picture is revealed.  Clicking on the picture will either play a short scene from the movie or trigger interactive animations and sounds.  The story is told through the perspectives of both Anna and Elsa.  We first see Elsa’s perspective.  Flip the device to see Anna’s perspective.  Each time the device is flipped, frost covers the screen and slowly melts away.  At certain points in the story an icon appears on the page that gives the option to play a puzzle game or start an ice drawing activity which,in the end, all comes together in a snow globe.  You can also record your own narration by pressing on the microphone icon on each page.  After recording, you can choose to have your narration played by clicking on that option on the settings menu.

iPhone Screenshot 3

The grown-ups or parents menu is accessed by pressing the “i” icon on the top left of the main menu.  This will bring up a numerical keypad and adults must enter the four numbers spelled out on top of the screen.  Here you can switch off the sound effects and music.  You can also set the app to one of six languages:  English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian.  There are links to other Disney apps as well as an option to gift the app and sign up for the Disney Digital Books email newsletter. The “?” icon on the top right of the main menu is the help button and gives you ample information about how to navigate through the app.

The “Play” menu shows all the games and activities included in the story as well as a free draw activity.  Free draw allows you to create an ice masterpiece using various ice and snow tools.  You can save all your creations, including the snow globes to the camera roll with just one click.

My daughter was delighted with this app.  I haven’t taken her yet to see the movie, but this app gave her a very good feel and excitement for it.  She enjoyed the drawing and snow globe activities the best, but was also very enchanted with the story.  Disney Digital Books did a fantastic job with this app.  It is sure to be loved by young readers and Frozen fans alike.

What we love…

Delightful adaptation of the 1973 television special with special twists added for iOS. Inspires nostalgia, is fun but also reminds us of the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

Summary

This app treats the young and the old to a delightful rendition of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. We loved sharing it with our families and seeing the story brought to life in digital format. Well done!

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

When thinking of Thanksgiving with my family I have flashbacks to childhood memories of watching the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special on television. This brand new app for iOS from Loud Crow Interactive features the dialog, music and sound effects from the original special aired in 1973. The app features narration by Stephen Shea, the voice of Linus Van Pelt. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving can be read in three different modes: auto-play, read to me, and read myself. The app also includes word highlighting as it is read as well as touch to speak by tapping on specific words to have them re-read. In addition, children can collect leaves, touch and interact with the pages. The characters and objects bounce and wiggle as if on springs if you touch them, there are hidden sound effects, surprises and pull tabs which produce actions and bring the story to life.

The volume of the background music and sound effects can be independently adjusted. There is a page navigation tab allowing children to easily return to their favorite scenes. The app features a “ribbon style” page turning method where you slide your finger across the ribbon to move sequentially through the page until finishing the text, when the traditional page turn corner appears; this all happens automatically in auto-play allowing even the youngest reader to enjoy it. We liked that the parent lock required users to set a clock to a specific time before it would “unlock” the protected parent’s section.

This iOS app is true to the television special and brought back many memories as we shared it with our families. The story is interactive and enjoyable, even for for the youngest of readers just listening as it is read. For those unfamiliar with the story, through a mis-understanding Charlie Brown ends up with a bunch of uninvited guests for Thanksgiving, he can’t cook and is going to his Grandma’s for his own Thanksgiving dinner, so what is he to do? With the help of his friends he pulls together a rather non-traditional Thanksgiving meal. At first some of his guests are not impressed, but they all learn a valuable lesson about what is truly important about Thanksgiving. The interactions on the page bring the story to life and help to engage the readers as well as encouraging them to follow along with the story. There are leaves hidden on every page and we made it a game with our children to see who could find the leaf first, while listening to the story. Mary’s son especially liked all the pull tabs and discovering that if you repeatedly pulled the tabs you could get the animation to repeat quickly. Some of our favorite interactions included Snoopy throwing everything out of the garage when hunting for a table, setting the table for Thanksgiving dinner, making stacks of toast fly and popping popcorn.

This app, like the animated cartoon that inspired it, is sure to become a Thanksgiving classic. It is a great app on many fronts- it inspires nostalgia, and it is a lot of fun; but it also reminds us of what Thanksgiving should truly be about, to quote Marcie “We should be thankful for being together. I think that’s what they mean by Thanksgiving Charlie Brown.”

In summary – this app treats the young and the old to a delightful rendition of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. We loved sharing it with our families and seeing the story brought to life in digital format. Well done!

Planes: Storybook Deluxe by Disney – Review

iPhone Screenshot 1

What we love…

You actually fly Dusty Crophopper through his many adventures!

What we’d love to see…

give readers the ability to choose difficulty levels for each flight adventure during Read and Play (as it is offered in the Race and Fly menu option).

Summary

A beautiful Disney Digital Book that brings Planes the Movie to your child’s hands!

Planes: Storybook DeluxeReady, Set, Fly! This beautiful deluxe storybook app has the same wonderful graphic details and sound effects as the movie itself. The story between Dusty the Crophopper, Dottie the Mechanic, Coach Skipper, and Chug unfolds in your lap as it does in the movie with a slight twist – You actually fly Dusty through his flight adventures!

Within the first of three menu options, Read and Fly, choose from Narration, Use My Recording, or Auto-Play. The Use My Recording allows you to record the story in your voice and then replay your recording on each page. My testers loved reading it in different voices/accents and then laughing as they replayed. This is also a great feature for adults that can’t always be with their little ones (parents at work, grandparents, military families, etc). Navigate through the pages to find your favorite part of the story or skip straight to Dusty’s flying adventures.

The Race and Fly menu option puts you in the pilot’s seat as you take Dusty through his flight adventures. Tilt your device from left to right and top to bottom racing Dusty through tunnels, snowstorms, and around mountain peaks. Three levels of play – trainee, pilot, and captain – make the app appealing to a large age/skill group. Choose from 14 different plane options (start with just a few, then earn more planes as you go). There are a few exclusive planes available for purchase (after entering a locked code). There are also 16 different flight paths that players earn as they fly, giving players new adventures and challenges.

The final menu option, Scan and Fly, allows users to unlock 10 new planes giving players even more diversity. Simply scan a Disney Planes logo and unlock a new plane every day.

Disney’s Planes Digital Book (designed for both the iPhone and the iPad) is written and narrated in 6 different languages and provides child safety features to prevent accidental changes to settings or access to the internet. Each page gives readers interactive features that activate movie phrases and character movements while Dusty’s story unfolds. So jump in the pilot’s seat and race Dusty through the interactive flying paths and enjoy the movie experience again and again!

This app is best suited for toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary school aged children.  The app has sections that can be a bit frustrating for the younger children.

Finding Nemo Storybook Deluxe by Disney Storytime – Review

iPad Screenshot 2

What we love…

illustrations, ability to record your own voice for the story, the “whale song” game with Dory

What we’d love to see…

Parent lock and removal of external links, ability to have an entire page re-read and optimization for an iPad Mini

Summary

Overall, good adaptation of the book although the current price point of $6.99 is a bit high for the amount of content included.

Our Rating

Finding Nemo Storybook DeluxeFinding Nemo Storybook Deluxe by Disney Storytime  provides your favorite characters from Finding Nemo in a storybook format.  The book features Nemo, Dory, Crush, Marlin, Gill and many more characters in this app.  The book features the story of Marlin the clownfish and his son Nemo who are in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef and is ready to start school.  Unfortunately, Nemo is dared by his friends during school at the drop off to touch a boat and is captured by a diver and ends up in the aquarium of a dentist in Sydney Australia.  Marlin is determined to save his son and meets up with Dory as well as a variety of other animals during his journey to save his son.  The book features “read it to me”, “read it to myself”, and our favorite of “record your own voice” which allows you to read a page in your own words.    It also includes coloring pages, puzzles and a matching game.

The illustrations in this app are top notch and very reminiscent of the movie.  We liked finding the sound effects and music within the app as well as the light animation within each page.  The pages do include word highlighting in the read to me mode and allow you to either “auto flip” or turn the pages on your own.  The coloring pages were fun – although hearing Dory translate our words to “Whale Song” was by far our favorite activity after reading the story.

The narration while done properly does leave a bit to be desired.  I wish you could tap on text to have the entire page re-read which is important for early readers as they practice literacy skills.  I also think that the current pricing of the app at $6.99 is a bit high for the amount of content that you get.  I also found that the pages did not fit well to my iPad Mini screen and ran over so we couldn’t easily access the buttons.  The app does include external links and does not have a parent lock – which should be added in a future update.

Overall, if your child is a Nemo lover like mine, this is a good adaptation of the movie.  There are external links including links to other apps, the iTunes store, Facebook, Twitter and the internet.  Be sure to check out our “Shark Week” post for other shark themed apps!
