Treasure Island – A Classic Tale HD By Tiger Games Limited – Review

iPad Screenshot 1

What we love…

Fun interactive elements, well narrated, good sound effects and background music.

What we’d love to see…

Read by myself option, word highlighting as it is read.

Summary

A comic book style adaptation of the classic Treasure Island Tale. This is most likely to appeal to boys in the 8yrs+ age bracket, and they would also enjoy the interactive elements

Our Rating

Treasure Island - A Classic Tale HD

Treasure Island – A Classic Tale HD by  Tiger Games Limited is a comic book rendition of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story. The app is available in iPad, iPhone  and android versions, this review is of the iPad version. It is an abridged and modified version of the original story, it has 65 pages and is divided into six chapters.

In this version of the tale Jim Hawkins is his bedroom working on his homework when he drifts off to sleep. His friends Livesey and Trelawney, come to visit and he tell them the tale of  Captain Flint, his chest and the treasure map. He tells how old blind Pew, Black Dog and the other pirates are after the map. They decide to go to sea to search for the treasure, Trelawney is the Admiral, Livesey the ships doctor and Jim the cabin boy. From there it is the familiar story of Long John Silver, the mutiny and search for the treasure. At the end of the story Jim wakes up in his bedroom disappointed to find it was all a dream, or was it ?…..

The story is illustrated in comic book style and is narrated by a British narrator  who does a good job and gives each character different voices. There is no text highlighting as it is read, and I could not find a read it myself option. Many pages have interactive elements and a hand on the screen points these out. They include sound effects and activities such as throwing coconuts at the pirates. There are also hidden pirate objects that you can collect throughout the story and are saved in “Davy Jones Locker”.

The developer says this is suitable for age 6yr+ but I would say a little older, probably 2nd Grade and up. There are some scenes especially in the beginning of the book that may be too scary for younger readers, and there is a quite a lot of talk about pirates dying. The illustrations can be a little coarse in places – one sailor has his bottom partly exposed (and farts when touched) and a wench in a bar has a pretty low-cut dress. My nine-year-old son enjoyed the book, and especially liked the interactive elements. I think the style of illustration and the overall feel of the book will appeal to boys from age 8+, and it has the potential to get reluctant readers in this group interested in the story (the original book is a great story and personal favorite of mine, but can be hard going unless you are a strong reader). However, to get this demographic interested in reading you really need to have an option to switch off the narration (whilst leaving on the music and sound effects), and word highlighting as it is read would be useful too.

Magic Town iPad App Updated: Additional Apps From Mindshapes Now Free – News

20120908-063517.jpgLondon, United Kingdom – Mindshapes is celebrating the update of the Magic Town app for iPad with a series of promotions. The Magic Town app, which is an interactive world based on popular picture books, is permanently free to download. And now, for a limited time, several Mindshapes apps are free as well. Children will enjoy Lingo Zoo, Tap a Tune, Jellytoons Toddler Skills and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Both the Magic Town app for iPad and the website are designed for children aged 2 to 6 years old. Children can read and play either independently or with an adult. There are more than 100 stories, or Livebooks, to choose from. And since the app’s June debut, children from more than 180 countries have read hundreds of thousands of Livebooks.

The updated Magic Town app maximizes the iPad’s technical capabilities. When children visit the home page, they can build their own version of the town by dragging and dropping the characters houses on the landscape. Parents will also enjoy the enhanced Bookshop where they can browse all of the Livebooks and watch preview videos.

Mindshapes created the Livebook format in close collaboration with child development experts including Professor Paul Harris at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The Livebook format is designed to use storytelling to stimulate children’s imagination, reasoning, social skills and language development.

The other Mindshapes apps are also educational. Tap a Tune teaches toddlers music appreciation. Jellytoons focuses on toddler skills like counting and shape and color recognition. Lingo Zoo demonstrates animal names in Spanish and English. And Jack and the Beanstalk is the classic tale with a modern twist.

Chris Michaels, Managing Director, Magic Town: “It’s been so exciting to see children around the world read and play in Magic Town. Magic Town is the perfect way for children to enjoy story time and develop the habit of reading every day. The Magic Town iPad app update comes just in time for the start of the new school year.”

I often suggest this list as a great starting point for new iPad owners, teachers and parents, especially when looking to build their digital library on a budget. Prices update daily on our site, so this list is always changing.”
