FriendStrip Kids Pro

Friendstrip Kids Pro by PhotoInPress is a universal app that allows your child to star in their own comic strips. The app includes sixteen different themes, each with a selection of comic strips, they are all included in the app. There is also a free version of the app available with an IAP to unlock all the themes. The app includes an option to share photos or comic strip via Facebook or email, this is child locked with password protection.

The app is really easy to use – choose your theme, pick a comic strip and download – this takes a few seconds if you have a good Wifi connection. The strips are short- usually 3-5 frames in length, once you have downloaded the strip you can flip through the scenes to see the storyline. Once you choose a scene the child acts it out and you take a picture of them doing so.  There is a good choice of themes to suit both boys and girls and my kids think it is great fun to act out the various comic strips. Currently the app includes 85 different comic strips in 16 different themes.

When you are taking the picture, frames appear on your camera screen to tell you where the child should be.  Some scenes include a lot of artwork that appears in the finished picture, some only a small amount, but what you see in the viewfinder is how the finished image will look.

After you have taken the image you can preview the strip and change the text if you wish. Finished comic strips are saved in the app and can also be shared via email or on Facebook. When you create a strip it is saved in the app, but if you want to create a new version of the same strip the old one is overwritten, so the only way to save it is to share it, it would be nice to be able to save multiple versions of the same strip.

I think this is a great app and lots of fun for all the family. I used the app with my children and they really enjoyed acting out the scenes and viewing the finished comic strips. They also enjoyed using the app by themselves acting out fun scenes with their stuffed toys, or our pets, as the actors. My son especially liked being a space pilot flying his space ship, and my daughter’s favorites were the scenes involving her stuffed toys.  I think this is a really fun creative app and great for encouraging families to play together. I also really like the option to change the script. This feature is especially good for using the app with older kids – encouraging them to think about the dialog, and change the script to match their imagination. I’d love to see the creativity go one step further by being able to take strips and add them together for longer stories and by being able to mix and match scenes from different strips

easier way to invite friends to use the app and ability to personalize invitations

KangaDo Parent Organizer by DoLightful Inc., is an app designed for busy parents in mind.  This iPhone app allows you to set up carpools, playdates, child care, and even your own specific “requests” on the go using your iPhone and sharing them with your network.  The app allows you to invite trusted friends, family, babysitters and others to view your “calendar” of requests and then you can choose to make requests of others or fulfill a request when they need it.  The app includes an integrated chat function and allows you to send text messages, photos and even your location.  When sending out a request, you can send it via the app as well as via email and when someone accepts, completes, comments or cancels you are notified via your iPhone.  The app also integrates with your calendar making sure that you remember all of your commitments.

My favorite feature of the app was that it allowed me to connect with friends and make requests on the fly as I needed them.  I also loved that it was able to sync with my calendar which meant I could see it across all of my devices.  It was super easy to use with a very low learning curve.

I wish there was an easier way to invite friends – you currently can use your iPhone contacts or invite by email.  Since not all of the email addresses I have are on my device, it became a bit time consuming to enter all of them.  I would love to see a way to import names/addresses into the app to make it easier to send out a mass invite. The app did pop up a bunch of individuals who were nearby, but I didn’t know any of them so I did not choose to connect with them.  I also would have liked to be able to personalize the invitation out to people rather than just clicking a bunch of names and “invite”.  The invites were sent via my cell phone number – and if someone didn’t have that in their contacts they might have wondered why they were getting the invite.

Great app that allows you as a busy parent to keep track of playdates, carpools, babysitting requests and more.  Works with your iPhone and iOS devices.  This is a parent app  and it made my life much easier!

What we love…

i Pics to Go is really easy to use, pictures are ready to upload, email or store on your iPhone within moments after snapping the picture

What we’d love to see…

a way to use i Pics 2 Go which allows you to keep your case on your iPhone as well as support for larger photos

Summary

If you are looking for an easy way to make photographs, slides and negatives digital and you already have an iPhone this is a great device!  I really had lots of fun taking photos of some of my favorite memories and being able to file away my photos rather than having to search through a shoebox when I wanted to find them!

iPICS2GODo you have lots of print pictures, slides and negatives in your house?  We certainly do!  I found a great solution to photograph all of my pictures, slides and negatives using my iPhone 4S with a device called Pics2Go from ION.  The device provides an extremely easy way for you to create digital copies your favorite 4×6 or s3x5 photographs, negatives or slides using your iPhone 4/4s. It contains contains a photo booth with a slider tray where you load your photos and your iPhone securely clicks into it. Then using the built in camera you can snap photos of the photograph, slide or negative and they are automatically saved to your camera roll. You can do limited editing within the app, but you can also export the pictures for further editing. One of my favorite features is the ability to snap a picture and share it via social media such as Facebook and email. The photo booth has built in lighting using AA batteries which helps to ensure the color is consistent, and your camera is always in the same spot.

The process for using the device is really easy!  For prints, simply load the picture into the iPics 2 Go photo tray, place the tray under the iPics 2 Go photo booth and take a picture with your iPhone 4/4S camera. You can save it to your camera roll. send it via email, share it via social media including Twitter and Facebook as well as edit it on the fly.

This device is really easy to use, and even my son was able to use it after I showed him how we put the photographs in.  I am looking forward to using it to create digital replicas of family photos so that they can be more easily kept in the future.  I also used it to take photos of negatives which I did not currently have print pictures of – the quality was fairly good and well lit from using the device.

I wish that you could put your iPhone into the iPics 2 Go without taking off the case – as it was a bit of a challenge to take mine on and off when I wanted to use it.  It would also be great if it supported larger photographs – or had some sort of an adapter or way of doing that as not all of my photos were 4×6 size.  I’d love to see it hold photos up to 5×7.  I also found that the included photo editing software didn’t help me when I was trying to enhance photos – I typically took pictures of items and then uploaded them or used another photo editing tool to enhance my photographs.  I also wished you could do more than one negative or slide at a time and that the quality was a little bit better – but loved the concept!

If you are looking for an easy way to make photographs, slides and negatives digital and you already have an iPhone this is a great device!  I really had lots of fun taking photos of some of my favorite memories and being able to file away my photos rather than having to search through a shoebox when I wanted to find them!

The Little App by House of H – Review

What we love…

easy to use, personalized to your child, activities provided an estimated time of completion letting us know if we had enough time

What we’d love to see…

more activities for older children, ability to select activities based on a specific skill, ability to save your creations within the app

Summary

Great app for those moments when you have run out of activities to do or just have a limited amount of time to complete them.

Our Rating

The Little AppThe Little App by House of H is an iOS app designed for iPhone but can be viewed on other devices such as iPod Touch and iPhone.  This app provides age appropriate activities, videos and ideas for creative play all via an integrated app on your iPhone.  The app is primarily geared toward parents of children age 0 – 3 but the developers do plan on building out the app to include additional activities for older children.  You can create individual profiles for each of your children to see age appropriate content for each child, access a variety of baby and toddler friendly video’s and more.

We liked the “story ideas” portion of the app the best as there have been days when the all too frequent, Mommy, I want to do something has come up and we only have a few minutes of time.  The ideas generated within the app have inspired us to take nature walks and look for specific objects beginning with a letter or theme .  I also liked that each time I logged into the app it provided a list of activities and the approximate amount of time it would take to complete them.  One of our favorite activities was the “shaking and soaking” where we put paint in a jar with construction paper and shock it to understand how paint traveled within the jar and hit the paper – the activity taught cause and effect, gross motor, provided visual stimulation and most of all was fun.  We have repeated this activity several times with varying colors of paint in a baby food jar to understand the experiment.  Parents can bookmark favorite activities as well as marking them as favorites and share them on social media like Facebook, Twitter and email.

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see more activities for older children added to the app.  Currently the app is centered on younger children and once they are four or five the activities are not quite as relevant although I have tweaked them to work for my son.   It would also be nice if there was a way to pre-select activities based on a specific skill you wanted to focus on such as fine motor or cause and effect.   It would also be great if there was a way to “save” your creations along with the activity cards or put them in a gallery.

Overall, this is a great app and has provided many hours of enjoyment for us especially during those dreaded, “I am bored” moments.  Now, we just pull out my iPhone and look for new activities that we can explore together.
