Baking: An art or a science? Introducing the Perfect Bake App-Controlled Smart Baking – Review & Giveaway

What we love…

Simple and easy to use, scales recipes in case of a mistake and makes baking with the kids fun and easy

What we’d love to see…

easier ability to add recipes via the app, able to make a second recipe while the first is cooking

Summary

I loved how easy the Perfect Bake made it for me to make cookies and desserts with my son.  He loved that he was able to help Mommy out and make recipes while learning at the same time.  Our family enjoyed the baked goods and there we no “oops” moments due to too much of one ingredient.  I am really looking forward to making Christmas cookies soon with my son for the holidays.

Perfect BakeI recently had a chance to test out the Perfect Bake from Brookstone and my son and I loved it!  When I was in college I worked in a bakery part time so I used to bake using recipes and mixtures quite a bit.  Now that I have a family I love spending time in the kitchen and baking.  Some would say that baking is more of a science than an art to ensure that the ingredients are added with the proper amounts  and sifted, measured and added in a scientific manner.  The good news is that with the Perfect Bake you don’t have to worry about it as much!

This scale combined with your device (iOS or Android) allows you to bake with no measuring, no trying to make sure you got that “pinch of a recipe” right.  Simply launch the app, pour the ingredient into the bowl and then when it’s done an alert tells you so.   The package includes a scale, phone/tablet stand, 3 mixing bowls which are color coded for small, medium and large, thermometer for the oven and a 3.5 mm cable.  You simply launch the app, plug the Perfect Bake into your device using the cable, and the scale listens via your device to ensure the proper amount is poured.  Each of the recipes in the app excluding the ones you enter yourself has a rating ranging from easy to hard.

I loved how easy the Perfect Bake made it for me to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies with my son.  Normally it’s a stressful process that involves me pre-measuring everything out to ensure we get the right amounts into the bowl.  Instead, with the Perfect Bake I was able to put the ingredients out in smaller sized containers and he simply poured them into the bowl.  We even made it into a math lesson saying – you need 2 cups of flour and ½  a cup of chocolate chips for this portion of the recipe.  The best part, if you over pour an ingredient the scale automatically adjust allowing you to fix the recipe without having to start over.  I also loved that the app would generate a list of recipes based on what you said was in the pantry allowing you to bake based on what you had on hand rather than having to run out to pick up ingredients to make a recipe.  After adding all the ingredients (which are marked with a check mark when you get the perfect amount) and mixing, then you can measure out the perfect portion sizes using the scale to ensure that you have made the item the correct size.
In terms of improvements, I wish there was an easier way for you to enter recipes into the app.  Currently, it’s a time consuming process to enter a recipe due to having to pick bowl size and entering in the amounts of each item manually.  It would be great if there was an import feature so you could write the recipes on the computer and easily import them into the app.  I also wished there was an easier way to do mixing – currently if you need to use the mixer you have to scrape everything into a bigger bowl to mix it and if you need to add ingredients to that bowl after mixing – transfer it back to the original color coded bowl.  I found this made for a LOT of dishes especially with more complicated recipes and I tended not to use my stand mixer for that reason.  I also wish that you could prepare a second recipe while the timer is still running for the oven for the first recipe.  When I bake I tend to make quite a bit and prefer to bake in batches, but unfortunately the scale doesn’t currently allow it.

Of note, I also used a sleeve to protect my iPad while baking to ensure that we didn’t accidentally have a splatter onto the iPad while cooking.

News: Pure Imagination Introduces Perfect Bake™, The Patented App-Controlled Smart Baking System That Turns Anyone Into A Master Pastry Chef

VANCOUVER, Wash., Sept. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Pure Imagination, LLC, a leading developer of smart products for the smart home, introduces Perfect Bake™, the patented app-controlled smart baking system that will revolutionize the way people bake at home, turning anyone into a master pastry chef. The heart of the Perfect Bake system is a smart digital scale that connects with an innovative app (Android and iOS compatible) together designed to make baking foolproof and fun, guaranteeing perfectly delicious results every time. It hand-holds the user throughout the entire baking process, from recipe selection, scaling and prep, measuring and adding ingredients, mixing and portioning, to baking and cooling. Perfect Bake is currently available for purchase at Brookstone stores nationwide and online at www.Brookstone.com/Perfect.

“For generations, home baking has been the same – follow a written recipe using measuring cups and spoons,” said Michael Wallace, partner, Pure Imagination. “With Perfect Bake, we have completely reimagined the way people bake at home for the Internet of Things generation, using technology to remove baking’s complexities and pitfalls. All you have to do is use the smart scale and follow the app. The result? Baking success every time.”

Users simply pour their flour, sugar, vanilla and other ingredients needed directly into the included color-coded mixing bowls. As an ingredient is poured, the virtual bowl on their tablet or smartphone fills up in real-time, showing progress. “Ding!” An audio alert tells the user it’s time to stop. With baking, precise measurement of each ingredient is critical. Measuring by weight is more accurate than measuring by volume, which is why professional pastry chefs weigh their ingredients. Perfect Bake takes this one step further – users no longer even have to measure ingredients, they just pour. This also makes the baking process more efficient and leaves behind less mess. Plus, each ingredient poured is checked-off to prevent one of the most common baking mistakes – forgetting an ingredient.

“Watching the virtual bowl fill up as you pour is pure magic!” said Steve Schwartz, VP Chief Merchandising Officer, Brookstone. “Perfect Bake adds a whole new element of fun to baking and it is easy enough for anyone to use, whether you’re an avid at-home baker, you barely know how to turn on your oven, or you’re a mom or dad baking with young children. Once you bake with Perfect Bake, you will never want to bake any other way again.”

Perfect Bake’s recipes are laid out in user-friendly color-coded blocks that correspond to each of the three included mixing bowls (though, any bowls can be used). When it’s time to switch bowls, the recipe will auto-advance to the next block and a virtual bowl will flash on screen indicating which bowl to place on the scale. When mixing is required, an in-app timer will pop up ensuring the perfect amount of mixing time. Users can easily start and stop timers and move between recipe blocks using the scale’s control pad to avoid dirty fingers on their smart device.

“The Perfect Bake system was designed to meet every baking need and occasion,” said Darin Barri, partner, Pure Imagination. “Only want to make 12 cookies, need the recipe to fit your 6-inch square pan or only have a half a bag of chocolate chips? The app does all of the calculations for you, automatically rescaling the recipe and adjusting the ingredient amounts – math that is complicated for even the best pastry chefs.”

More than 200 savory and sweet recipes are initially available in the Perfect Bake app, including gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan recipes, all developed and tested by a team of Culinary Institute of America (CIA) trained pastry chefs and avid at-home bakers. Categories range from cakes and cupcakes, cookies and brownies, breads and scones to frostings and fillings, as well as no-bake recipes for time-constrained bakers. New recipes will be added continually with each app update.

Other unique features to ensure mouthwatering success include:

The Pantry, users can keep track of what ingredients they have on hand, choosing from more than 400 items cataloged, and search for recipes they can make with just those ingredients. The app will list recipes according to how many of the required ingredients are currently in the pantry, also showing any ingredients that are missing, if any, from a given recipe.

Portion Meter, users place a pan or cookie sheet on the scale and pour the batter or spoon the dough. The portion meter weighs each cookie, cupcake, etc. to ensure the perfect amount. Proper portions are key to guaranteeing everything cooks evenly.

Three timers make it simple to know how long to mix, bake and cool. Users can run the timers concurrently to streamline the baking process when making multiple batches.

How-to Videos, throughout the baking process, users have access to more than 60 original in-app videos showing how to properly perform each baking action.

Recipe Editor, users can enter their own recipes and photos or customize existing recipes.

Perfect Bake includes a digital smart scale, a free downloadable app (available in the Apple App Store and Google Play), three color-coded mixing bowls with non-slip bottom surfaces and pouring spouts (microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe), an oven thermometer, 3.5mm cable and a smartphone/tablet stand. The suggested retail price is $69.99.

Perfect Bake is compatible with Apple devices with iOS 6 and higher, and Android devices with OS 4.1 or higher that have a headset jack with a microphone pin. For a complete list of compatible devices, visit http://perfectbakeapp.com/compatibility/

Henri Le Worm -Learn and Play with his Amazing Cooking Adventures – Review + Giveaway

What we love…

Fun mini-games, very well narrated, colorful, engaging characters, fun way to encourage children’s interest in healthy food and nature.

What we’d love to see…

Option to switch off music and sound effects, addition of crepe recipe. Using the name crepes instead of pancakes in the North American version of the app to avoid confusion with American pancakes.

Summary

A fun and engaging app that combines a story with mini-games and real life recipes, which may inspire children to try some new fruits or vegetables and to see some “creepy crawlies” in a new light.

Our Rating

Henri le Worm – Learn and Play with his Amazing Cooking AdventuresHenri Le Worm -Learn and Play with his Amazing Cooking Adventures, is a British app with a French twist. Henri Le Worm is a chef and is based on real-life French celebrity chef Raymond Blanc. Raymond Blanc is very well known in Britain both for his Michelin starred restaurants and for starring in several cooking-related television shows. Henri was created by Raymond’s son Oliver Blanc and actress Charlotte Salt. It is an app designed for children ages 3-8 years old, which combines an interactive storybook with mini-games and also includes family- friendly recipes created by Raymond Blanc. Whilst they have fun playing, children can also learn about food and nature. The story is told by well-known British actor Simon Pegg, who brings the characters to life with different voices. There is word-highlighting as it is read, and it has sound effects and lively original background music. I like the music, but would like to see an option to switch off music and sound effects for those children who find it distracting. The app is child-safe with no adverts, in-app purchases or external links.

The story is set in the Forest of Plenty and is told by a slug named Sebastian. The reader begins by exploring an edible garden in the forest, and they can pick the vegetables and fruits growing there. Each time they pick a plant Sebastian tells them a fact about it or suggests ways of cooking it. The reader can also regrow the plant by watering the garden and “eat it” by tapping on it. Henri appears in the garden and if you tap on him you can follow him underground and help him dig down to his kitchen. It is the day before the annual Best Chef competition which Henri has won the last 8 years in a row. The reader can explore Henri’s kitchen and help him cook. On today’s menu are English Pancakes/crepes, and the reader can help Henri do all the steps in making them- sieving flour, cracking eggs, adding milk, whisking; cooking and flipping  then adding toppings. Henri explains that the French call pancakes crepes, this may be a little confusing for American children as they are referring to English pancakes which are a little different than American pancakes, and are traditionally served with lemon juice instead of maple syrup.

Henri’s friends have come over for breakfast – they all introduce themselves – Derek the ladybird (ladybug), Sebastian the slug, Texas Lou the spider, and Tina the flea. The reader can serve them all breakfast of pancakes, orange juice and tea and help them eat in a mini-game reminiscent of Toca Tea Party. During breakfast we are introduced to Sheldon the snail, Lumpy the maggot and Minimota the mosquito. Lumpy is desperate to win the Best Chef competition himself and the trio hatch a dastardly plan to steal Henri’s cookbook ? Will their plan succeed? Who will win the competition? You’ll need to read the story to find out. In the process you will learn about lots of different fruits, vegetables, insects and bugs as well as have a few laughs along the way.

This app is very bright and colorful with engaging mini-games and fun larger than life characters, but as well as being fun it also aims to encourage children’s interest in healthy foods and teach them a little about nature. To further involve your family in healthy eating it also includes a selection of 10 healthy recipes for you to prepare with your child. Several of them, such as rainbow salad and raspberry fool, appear in the story. Each recipe highlights steps that the child can help with. My one disappointment with this section was that it didn’t include a recipe for French crepes with fruit topping, although this would be a very simple recipe for many British families to do without help, most American kids would not have had this style of pancake and it would tie in very well with the story.

Overall a fun and engaging app that combines a story with mini-games and real life recipes. Highly recommended, it may  just inspire your children to try some new fruits or vegetables and to view some “creepy crawlies” in a new light.
