Totally Pregnant by 40weeks – Review

iPhone Screenshot 1

What we love…

the free content in the app is fantastic and helps you really understand how your pregnancy is progressing week by week

What we’d love to see…

Information about siblings

Summary

My favorite “go-to” pregnancy app. The free version provides quite a bit of content and the subscription based one gives even more.

Our Rating

\

Totally Pregnant by 40weeks is a universal app for iOS and Android designed for Mums and Dad’s to be in Canada and the UK. The app includes a weekly video, ability to ask questions of local experts, finding deals on baby products and helping you understand the changes made each week during your pregnancy.

This is one of my favorite pregnancy apps. The video’s are by far my favorite part as I like to see week by week what is happening as my pregnancy progresses. The video’s have detail using computer animation as well as a video blogger who explains their symptoms of the week and covers specific topics like morning sickness, ultrasounds, different tests as well as preparing for the birth of your baby. I also liked that the app gave you the “premium” version for a month to determine if you wanted to upgrade so you could see all of the features. As part of the free app, you get access to a weekly video (although it is constrained to your current week), a description of what to expect during the week, a tip of the day (which changes daily) the ability to add documents to a photo album including ultrasound photos, lab tests and belly pictures.

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see more information on how to prepare other children for an upcoming arrival as the video blogger for Canada (the version I reviewed) was doing the weekly video’s from a point of view for a first time Mum. I known that my son enjoys watching the weekly video to learn more about what is happening that week.

iPhone Screenshot 3The app contains in-app purchases for discounts at the shopping as well as the ability to ask experts a question and see the “extra” 3D video. As a mom I felt that the extra IAP was worth it because I felt it added so much to the app in terms of content although the app did contain quite a bit of free content.

The app does contain external links to the internet as the ability to share on Facebook and is aimed at parents, not children. The app is free to download, some features including the shop discounts require membership. If you like the app, I would suggest buying the “full pregnancy” in-app purchase as it is significantly cheaper over time than the trimester or monthly option. Memberships are for a set period of time and do not require renewal and allow you to watch all of the video’s at once instead of having to wait for your specific week to pass by.

Of all the pregnancy apps that I have downloaded, this is one of my favorites. I enjoy watching the week by week video’s to learn what is going on in the pregnancy as well as what to anticipate in the future. The app is currently only available in the UK and Canadian app stores, but the developer has plans to expand the app to additional app stores in the near future.

Dr. Panda’s Restaurant 2 by Dr. Panda – Review

What we love…

ability to pick your own ingredients and make a dish that the customer likes using their favorite ingredients

What we’d love to see…

ability to use money earned from the app to buy “upgrades” including ethnic foods, additional kitchen gadgets, tablecloths and the like.  Also would like to feed both customers at the same time

Summary

Great app for practicing creative play skills and satisfying what a customer wants with their favorite ingredients

Our Rating

Dr. Panda Restaurant 2 by Tribeplay is a universal app for iOS that puts your little chef in a tropical kitchen and allows them to make food to delight their patrons.  The app includes more than 20 ingredients including fish, eggs, peppers, tomatoes, three types of pasta, seasonings and more.  You can boil, bake, fry and cop ingredients to make the perfect dish for your patrons who arrive in parties of two via a water taxi and place their orders.  As you are making the item, the guest will stand at the window while you pick out the ingredients and make faces depending on what they want on their meal.  Each dish allows you to put different toppings to satisfy their taste.  The app includes a traditional diet as well as a switch for a vegetarian diet.  The app practices attention to detail, fine motor required for chopping, slicing and laying out the ingredients as well as making sure the customers are getting the food that they want.  In addition children follow recipes step by step which include making the pasta, pouring it into the colander, putting it on the plate and then making a sauce.  Other tasks include rolling out the pizza dough before adding additional ingredients.

One of my son’s favorite features was seeing the different reactions of the animals to the foods either if they liked or disliked them as well as the salt/pepper ratio.  He also loved the creativity which allowed him to experiment with different types of ingredients while making the dishes.   As a parent, I thought the option to have vegetarian as well as a traditional menu was a good one since different people like different things.   The graphics in the app were top notch and it felt very realistic when you were playing with the app.  We loved how the customers arrived via the water and had the intimate restaurant with Dr. Panda to themselves.  We also loved the refrigerator and pulling the handle to pick out the favorite ingredients and then choosing how we would prepare them.

iPhone Screenshot 4

In terms of enhancements, currently when making the meals you are only able to make it for one of the two individuals at a time.  I’d like to see the ability to prepare both meals (either simultaneously or apart) to allow them to eat at the same time.  I’d also like to see the currency collected after meals allow you to “upgrade” different features of the kitchen such as the newest kitchen gadget or tablecloth/napkins/place settings.  I would also like to see some ethnic foods such as sushi included as well as the ability for the customers to order deserts after finishing their meal.

The app contains no third-party ads and contains a parental gate which allows you to turn off the pop up advertising for Dr. Panda Games which appears on the first screen of the app.  There are no in-app purchases.  External links are protected by a parental gate.

Overall, this app is a great addition to the Dr. Panda library of apps.  It is best suited for slightly older children such as those age 5 and up compared to some of their earlier apps.  The creative play and experimentation will appeal to budding chefs of all ages.

Love, the app by Pablo Curti

Captura de pantalla del iPad 1

What we love…

the beautiful animations, pen and ink drawings as well as the story being brought to life via the iPad in unexpected ways

What we’d love to see…

narration/reading aloud of the app, easier way to find all the animations

Summary

Though reading the story initially made me sad, it helped me to see how animated stories have grown from fifty years ago to today and is a beautiful adaptation of a story about love and a little girl sharing the news. This is a beautiful app and will always remind me of the simpler things in life. The story teaches us that no matter what, love is unconditional and we should love each person as they are for who they are.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

Love, the app by Pablo Curti and written for iOS is an app designed for iOS that features paper cut animations bringing a fifty year old book LOVE which was first published in 1964 in a paper book to life. Since the original book was published fifty years ago, it was published in 10 countries. The app features the story of a little girl who lives in an orphanage because her parents “went away” when she was nine. Using a variety of paper cuts, animation and more, the animated story is brought to life using color and texture on the iPad to reveal additional parts of the story. The little girl feels sad, because no one ever told her that she was darling, beautiful or cute. Once in the orphanage she tries to blend in with the other children, but there were so many children that no one really paid attention to her. At the orphanage, the little girl walks around and finds beauty in nature from simple things like a leaf, a bird, or just to stop and think her own thoughts. She becomes friends with nature and realizes that there are many beautiful things in the world and that nature is a wonderful thing. Near the end of the story, one day an attendant from the orphanage found her putting a piece of paper, a small note inside a tree with the following note, “whoever finds this “I love you”, showing that despite all the challenges that this little girl faced, she still found a way to love even those that she did not know.

One of my favorite parts of the app was all the interactions on each page – some of which were hidden and others that were generated by tapping on a paper flap or touching the various parts on the screen. The story is poignant and aimed at older children as well as adults who can understand what it is like to be in a large room of people, yet feel completely alone. The app helped me see the joy that simple things like nature can bring including ultimately a way to love others. The end of the story features snippets from the text that you can pull across to reveal scenes from the book which help you remember the story and brings you to my favorite part – the “love note”.

The app contains no external links, although it does contain information about the author and the reason that he wrote the book originally. This app is designed for older children as well as adults who will identify with the text as well as understanding the true meaning of love and the girls journey to find it.

In terms of improvements to the app, at times it was a bit hard to find all of the places you needed to touch for the story and reading the text was a bit off at times because it wasn’t easy to follow sequentially from left to right like traditional reading. I understand this is the style of the story, but having a narration to the story would be a delightful addition. I’d also love to customize the love note at the end of the story as well.

The app contains many new things that I find each time I open it. Although reading the story initially made me sad, it helped me to see how animated stories have grown from fifty years ago to today and is a beautiful adaptation of a story about love and a little girl sharing the news. This is a beautiful app and will always remind me of the simpler things in life. It’s a story of a little girl who teaches us that no matter what circumstances we face, love is unconditional and we should love each person as they are.
