The Surfr iPhone case from Enerplex is a back up battery case that also incorporates a solar charging panel. It is available in a variety of colors and in versions that fit the iPhone 5/5s and iPhone 6+. I tested the iPhone 6 version.

The case has a 2 tone design with a black back and front trim and colored sides, which looks good. The surface of the case is lightly textured feeling quite “grippy” and comfortable in your hand. It has a built-in 2,700mAh battery which in our testing could fully recharge the iPhone 6.

The case’s dimensions are 154mm/15.4cm (6.1″) X 74mm/7.4cm (2.9″) X 14.8mm/1.48cm (0.8″) and it weighs approximately 4oz, which is relatively slim and light for a battery case. I found that as a battery case it worked well. It is easy to install and remove – it is in 2 pieces that slide on/off the phone.

I was initially very excited by the Solar charger. I often go camping and I thought the solar charger would be a great way of giving my phone a small power boost when needed when I was away from an electricity source. The manufacturers do state that the primary way to charge the case is via micro-USB and that the solar charger is just for extra emergency charging (they estimate it would take 24-36 hours to fully charge using solar power), but that was just what I was looking for on my camping trips. The first time I used it it seemed to work quite well, unfortunately that was the only time that it has worked. My husband and I have tried using the solar charger multiple times since, each time the light appears to indicate charging but the case will not charge the phone at all afterwards even after leaving the case in direct sunlight for several hours. It still works perfectly when charged via the micro-USB so it seems that the solar panel or it’s connection to the battery must be faulty.

Overall, the Surfr case for iPhone 6 looks good and works well as a backup battery case, but in our testing the Solar Charger failed to deliver, making it disappointing for those hoping to be able to charge it with Solar Power.
