Our Rating

Tame your Thought Monster by McClain Consulting Services, Inc. is an app designed as an interactive coloring, drawing, audio and “feel good” app.  The app features a book with feel better friends, the team of characters in the story and how you can positive self-talk to give yourself the power.  Many of the pages feature coloring which can be saved to the camera roll in your device.  This app targets children from preschool through adulthood and can be used independently as you get older. It is a great app for articulating feelings, practicing positive self talk as well as using it to practice social skills.

I really liked the positive talk in the app – so often kids struggle with something and they internalize it without telling their parents.  For my son, he has struggled with tying shoes for a long time – and my husband and I have been trying to encourage him to do so.  He was feeling a sense of panic inside that he wasn’t able to articulate to us until he and I sat down and used the app.  He had kept saying we “would be angry” or “we didn’t understand” but I didn’t really realize the true depth of his feelings (at age 7) until we sat down and talked about it.  I also liked the “see how awesome” you are page – we filled it out and saved it to my camera roll on my iPhone so we could print it out for the wall.  That serves as a nice reminder of the learnings within the app and helps to practice the steps that we learned within the app.  The coloring within the app was oddly soothing even for me as an adult as I read through the story.  I also really liked the quotes inside, which helped me think of how I could inspire and help others. I have made my list of items that I want to work on short term and will revisit the app when I’m ready to work on my next one. My son drew pictures of his thoughts as well off device and we used that as an opportunity to talk about them. I liked the guidance on how to show your feelings via words, pictures, describing or any combination thereof as well as the strategies for coping.

I would like to see a way to “re-read” the pages if you want to hear it again without having to switch pages.  Currently the only way I could figure out how to do it was with the back and forward buttons.    It would also be nice to have a way to “pinch and zoom” the text especially on an iPhone becuase it can be small when reading it yourself.  I’d also like to see a “do good to others” section as a suggested strategy – I know that doing good for others always makes me feel good as a person and is encouraging.

Overall, this is a great app designed to encourage positive self talk  which is great for everyone.  I really enjoyed using the app with my seven year old and even myself after a recent parenting challenge.

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. They have a variety of devices including an iPad, iPhone, and an iPod and is often found with a device! My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
