Sensory Processing Therapy – tool to help parents manage sensory diet & home programs by SensoryTreat Ltd – Review and Giveaway
Developed for caregivers of sensory needing kids, this app keeps us organized and thus helps our sensory kiddos get organized – creating a beautiful snowball effect ☺ Anyone that loves sensory kids knows that the best treatment for our lovelies is consistent sensory doses throughout the day – several times throughout the day. But, it’s hard to remember when to provide the input, what input to provide, where to document responses, and on and on….
This app (available in the App Store and on Google Play) helps us do all that – and more ☺ And, you can try it for free for 14 days! This lite version offers limited exercise examples but scheduling, experience and observation features are the same in the lite and full versions. Ready to get started??
First, set up an account linked to your email. Then follow the easy tutorial steps to develop a fully customizable daily schedule for your sensory kiddo (i.e., set alarm time and choose from 1 of 6 sensory categories based on guidance from your child’s occupational therapist). Your alarm reminder goes off when its time for a sensory break. You choose from a list of activities within the previously specified sensory category and then select from a group of illustrations, set a timer (to track how long the activity is completed), and click done. Now, ask your child to rate the activity (happy/sad face) and you add any additional notes you may want. Simple as that! But what happens if your sensory kiddo is not with you? No problem, use the app link to forward a text message reminder to whomever your child is with at the time.
With over 100 simple/concrete illustrations that are color-coded by sensory system, it’s easy to find an activity that both you and your sensory kiddo will enjoy (and fit easily into your schedule, no matter where you are). If a favorite is not listed, just add it using the “add your own” category. Take a photo/video, name the activity, add a description, and your favorite is now a part of your schedule.
Get the best out of therapy by emailing updates to your OT – ensuring the right sensory fit and the right sensory challenge. The experience tab within the app collects happy/sad face data and summarizes it in a weekly chart by activity. It also compiles data by sensory category (showing which category is favored or which is definitely not liked). Finally, four different areas (goals) can be tracked too. The app default lists sleep, eating, playing, and emotionally. But again, the developers have left it open to customize to your child’s needs/goals. Every week, caregivers can rate each area on a sliding scale from “not good” to “good” and then share this data with their OT.
The developers of Sensory Treat have definitely done their research. Both the developers and the illustrator draw from their own personal experience with their own sensory children. They have consulted with OTs certified in sensory integration and value consumer feedback. And, they give back to the sensory community too. Their products are produced by Autism Society member organizations that employee individuals with autism. An app truly worth checking out by caregivers and therapists!
