Sentence Builder by AbiTalk is an app designed to help improve literacy and reading skills of your preschool and early elementary school aged child. This app designed for iOS on the iPad provides a significant amount of flexibility as you customize your own pictures, words and sentences allowing you to customize the curriculum to your child’s specific needs. The app provides multi-user profiles allowing it to be used both at home with parents, in a school based classroom setting as well as by speech/reading therapists with children on their caseload. It also integrates with Dropbox allowing for integration between multiple iPads as well as creating the ability to back up work. The app allows for practice of literacy skills, sentence mapping and grammar as well as proper arrangement of words to make a complete sentence. AbiTalk began in 2011 when founder Emmy Chen was looking for a way to teach her son reading and phonics in an interactive way. They currently have a portfolio of over 75 apps in both English and Chinese.
One of my favorite features of the app is the ability to create your own sentences. This feature allows you to create a sentence using your voice, words and images allowing customizability that worked well with my sons sight words we were working on. The app includes a library of images or allows you to upload your own to go along with the sentences. As your child masters simpler sentences, they become more complex. For example, a sentence might start with David sleeps and expand to include a description of where he sleeps. The narration in the app is clear and easy to understand. I also liked that the app covers content from kindergarten to second grade and beyond.
In terms of enhancements, it would be nice if you could customize the current sentences which are preset in the app or even record them yourselves. In addition a parent dashboard which allows you to see progress to date would be helpful. I also would like to see the ability to record “stories”, currently I create another user to focus on specific words and vocabulary but it would be nice if this could all be under the same profile. When reading the sentence aloud it would be nice to highlight the words similar to when they are placed to reinforce them to children.
Overall, this is a great app which allows your child to work at their own pace and focus on reading. The rearranging of words is helpful as children can hear the sentence and put the words in the proper order. I would suggest that parents spend time using the app and reviewing how to videos on YouTube prior to letting their children use it to allow for practice and understanding of capabilities.
Be sure to grab the app for only $0.99 just in time for Mother’s Day!
