Math Mathews is an iPad only app by Kiupe. Kiupe was founded by a group of video game designers who came together to use their skills to produce educational apps that are fun, interactive and engaging. Math Mathews is designed for children ages 8-12 (and adults too!) to work on their multiplication skills and learning their times tables. The app contains no adverts, in-app purchases, social media or external links. It has individual player profiles for up to seven players.
Before starting to play the game the student can read the “Ship’s Log” to learn about the story of Captain Mathews -and his crew Carl and Celia. Captain Mathews is a pirate who has been turned into an octopus, to break the spell he needs to find the necklace of Sylla which is broken into three parts scattered throughout archipelago Walter. There are 3 different games to play to retrieve the 3 parts of the necklace. There is also a practice area where the student can be quizzed on multiplication questions – they can pick which tables they are quizzed on (1-9). to start playing the game they look at a pirate map and choose 1 of 3 locations: the ancient citadel, the secret temple or the sacred cave.
The Ancient Citadel
Here the crew is under fire from their arch enemy Captain Buck, he is dropping boxes of TNT on their ship. Each box has a number on, the player has to load the cannon with the right amount of powder to protect the ship. The powder is in sacks with numbers on them the player has to pick the right number of sacks before the fuse runs out, then fire the cannon. Here questions are in the form of 3 x ? = 21.
The Secret Temple
Carl, Celia and Captain Mathews have to raise an old elevator by hand to reach the necklace chain. The player is presented with a number which is the answer to a multiplication problem, they must match to the right numbers on 9 x 9 grid before the fuse runs out. If they do they move up a notch, otherwise they are shown the right answer and a new question. Here questions are of the type ? x? = 36.
The Sacred Cave.
Here the trio are surfing along a river in search of the gem from the necklace. boxes are floating in the river, which they need to avoid. They see a multiplication problem and have to tap on the box with the correct answer before the fuse burns out to find a safe path up the river. Here questions are questions in the form of 3 x 7 = ?
In each game there are bonus rounds where the player can collect treasure by dragging treasure chest to the Captain and by tapping on falling coins. After each session the player can see the treasure they earned and their scores for questions answered.
When a player completes three rounds without any errors they can earn a piece of the necklace, once they have earned all 3 pieces they are rewarded by getting access to the rest of the pirate tale in the Ships Log.
Parents can visit the notebook which shows reports on how the student is doing on each of the nine tables, data is kept for the 10 most recent sessions for each table. Players can visit the treasure room to see all the treasure they have earned, plus badges they earn for their expertise in each table.
Overall, this is a really well done app. I love the way they have made an engaging adventure out of working on maths problems! Because of the fuse running for each question, players are encouraged to try to answer quickly, which is important for school tests, but if they don’t get it right in time they see the right answer and can just keep playing. I like that the same questions are presented in 3 different ways in the three games. The one thing I would like to see added is an option to make it easier for younger players -by adding the ability to choose which tables are worked on in the main game, or by having a practice mode without the timer. This app is Pirates of the Caribbean meets Indiana Jones meets multiplication! The treasure they can earn, the quest for the necklace and the ultimate prize of unlocking the whole story of Captain Mathews keeps them coming back. Highly recommended, a true gem of an app !
