RokLienz: Rok Out Concert! – Make your own music video!

RokLienz – Rok Out Concert! is a Universal app from Californian app developer Creativity. Creativity has been making toys for over 10 years and this is their 2nd app – the first is Do-Re-Mi 1-2-3. In this app you are the creative director for a band of musical Aliens – the Rok Lienz, and you can help them perform songs and make music videos. It is a free app with in-app purchase (IAP). It contains no adverts or social media links. The free app is fully functional and includes 4 band members, 4 more band members are available as IAP’s (99c each or $2.99 for all). The IAP’s are accessible from the “choose your band members” page and the “biography” pages – it would be nice if there was an option for parents to lock these from within the app. I would recommend parents switch off IAP’s in the iPad settings to avoid children accidentally purchasing them.

The app includes four songs, one is unlocked initially, and the others are unlocked once you complete tasks within the app such as watching the tutorial or creating videos. On the home page you can read biographies of all the band members – including which planet they are from, how they were discovered, what instrument they play and their favorite things. Creating the music videos is very simple and fun. First you choose which song to record : Bak A Rami, Junzo, Dee Den Too, or Yigg Yop. You can tap on a musical note to hear samples of each song.

Next you choose the set the band will play on – there are 12 different ones to choose from. Then you pick which of the band members will be performing today – you can choose anywhere from one to four band members in the free version, with a full unlock you can include up to eight musicians. They get excited if you pick them, and sound sad when you deselect them.

Once you have today’s lineup you can visit the wardrobe department, or go straight to playing. In the wardrobe department you can pick which color instrument they play and choose accessories. Each character has 3 different things you can choose for them and three options for each, my daughter would love to see more options for accessorizing them.

Once the band is ready to perform you press “Lets Rok!” and they all appear on set. With each character you tap them to start them playing or singing, and press second time to stop them. Pressing and holding lets the character perform a solo, and you can drag them to make them jump and spin around the stage at the same time. You can just play around with them on stage having different combinations of characters joining in the song at different times, or you can create a video of their performance. To make a video just press the red “Record” button to start,  then the black “Stop” button to end the recording. The recording will automatically stop after 1 min if you haven’t stopped sooner. The video automatically saves to your camera roll and you can access the finished video from within the app (by pressing the Sunflower button) or from your camera roll.

Overall, this is a really fun, creative app that my children and I enjoyed playing with, it is really easy to create your own music videos. The app has bright cheerful, funky graphics and is just fun to play with. The app has a lot of content for a free app and you can definitely have a lot of fun with it without buying any IAP. I’d definitely recommend downloading it. If you like the free version I would recommend paying the $2.99 to unlock the rest of the characters – it gives more flexibility with a bigger cast of band members and helps to support the developer. I hear there will be RokLienz  musical toys that interact with the iPad coming later this year too.
